The day is finally here. I am writing about the most popular and beloved home tour we have ever run here at Design*Sponge. And to be honest, I was entirely unsurprised that this very special home took the #1 spot. In fact, most of our team guessed that this would be “the one.” Not only because it is one of the most beautifully designed interiors we’ve been lucky enough to run, but mainly because it tells the story of one very special family and how they’ve built their lives, and home, with joy, connection, and history at its heart. It’s an honor to celebrate the home of writer Rumaan Alam, photographer David Land, and their wonderful boys, Simon and Xavier, one last time.
More than any other home (and perhaps any other post), this is the interior and story that I got the most emails, DMs and comments about. The wall of George Washington portraits in the dining room was an instant hit (Thank you for sharing all of your photos of spaces you created inspired by this design moment!), and the bold green wallpaper in the boys’ room was asked about over and over and over. But I think what stood out the most about this post was the story — and people — behind it. The best home tours are, in my book, more about the people than the place. And when you can find a home that seems to combine both, you’ve got something really special. So it’s with great joy in my heart that I say a heartfelt thank you to David, Rumaan, and their boys for sharing their family and their home with us. It was truly an honor to post this story. And thank you to all of you who clicked, shared, and celebrated this along with us. Homes and families like these will stay in my heart for years to come. xo, Grace
