Top 20 Home Tours of All Time: #20 Shavonda’s California Home

by Grace Bonney

Over the past 15 years, we’ve published close to 20,00 posts and over 2,000 home tours. And considering that each of our home tours takes weeks, if not months, to come together, that’s no small feat. Each home tour is the result of coordination, collaboration and the hard work of gracious homeowners/renters, photographers, and our writers (You can read more about how our home tour process has worked over the years right here).

To celebrate our final year of Design*Sponge, we’re going to spend every morning for the next few months looking back at our Top 20 most popular posts of all time in all our main categories: interiors, DIYs, before & afters, essays, business, and recipes. From 2004 all the way up to 2019, these are the posts that generated the most conversation, received the most views and were most shared around the web and social media (and some even before social media was a thing!).

Today we are starting with our Top 20 Home Tours of all time and #20 holds a very special place in my heart.

#20: A California Family Sacrifices Square Footage for Soul

  • Who Lives There: Designer and design blogger Shavonda Gardner and her wife, Naomi, their two children and pets.
  • Where: Sacramento, California
  • DS debut: March 2017

This home means so much to me because a) it’s gorgeous b) it celebrates color and maximalism in a way that felt so refreshing against the minimalism of this year and c) it was such an honor to share the story of a beautiful LGBTQ+ family. Following Shavonda and her family online has been such a joy and this home will stay in my heart forever.

Suggested For You

  • I am going to miss your home tours so much! I am not at all surprised that over the course of 9 years of reading D*S, I remember this home. I appreciate the research, art, and work that goes into these tours to make them and the homeowners so memorable. Thanks, D*S!
