Patch Pocket Heart + 2 Valentine’s Day Inspired DIYs

by Caitlin Kelch

Hearts come in many shapes and sizes this time of year, but I’ve always preferred the slightly uneven, handmade versions that someone took the time to cut out and make by hand. These three DIYs are exactly that. Whether they’re filled with love notes, candy or just come as they are, these handmade tokens of love are little reminders that someone in your life is special. I hope you have a little extra time this week (or weekend) to play around with some materials you may already have on hand and see what you come up with!

Hanging Valentine Patch Pocket

  • 2 differently patterned fabrics (We used Waverly Inspirations classic gingham and polka dot fabrics)
  • Glue gun & glue
  • Scissors
  • Embroidery needle
  • Embroidery floss or yarn
  • Ruler
  • Light cardboard
  • Ribbon (We used Waverly Inspirations double ruffle edge ribbon in red and their scalloped grosgrain ribbon with white edging detail)

Heart 1 - 2

1. Cut two 5″ x 4″ rectangles of the fabric that will be the background for the heart pocket.

2. Cut out a heart shape from the fabric you’ve chosen to be your patch pocket. Make sure it fits nicely on your background, with at least 2″ of background fabric surrounding the edge of the heart shape. (You’ll be cutting a heart shape from the background fabric too, so you’ll need room on the sides of the patch pocket.)

3. Turn your patch pocket heart shape over so that it’s right side down. Using your glue gun, apply hot glue to the edge of the heart pocket beginning at the top of right, top part of the heart, working your way around to the same spot on the left side of the heart. Be sure to leave the edge in between the two peaks of the heart shape unglued so you can actually use it as a pocket and put something in it! (Bottom line is don’t glue the entire heart on the background!)

Heart stitch

4. Once your patch pocket heart is glued to the background, thread your needle and knot it. Start the process of sewing the patch pocket heart onto the background by bringing the needle through both the background fabric and the patch fabric from underneath. Once you’ve pierced both fabrics, pull your needle and thread all the way through until your knot stops underneath the fabric. Bring your needle just past the edge of the patch (on the background fabric) and push through to the underside. Repeat this process, left to right, from the same places on the patch heart peaks that you laid your hot glue on. Again, be sure to leave the edge in between the two peaks of the heart shape unattached so you can actually use it as a pocket and put something in it!

5. Cover one side of your cardboard with your wet glue using a paintbrush. Attach the background fabric with your attached patch pocket to the cardboard.

6. Cut an 8″ length of ribbon and match the two cut ends together and apply hot glue in between them so the ends stick together. Turn the cardboard over and apply hot glue about 2″ from the deep “V” point of the heart. Press the ribbon loop into the hot glue to attach it to the cardboard.

7. Cover the ribbon side of your cardboard with your wet glue using a paintbrush. Attach the second rectangle of background fabric to this side of the cardboard. Let dry.

8. Following the outline of the smaller patch pocket heart, cut through the cardboard, making a larger heart shape around the patch pocket heart.

9. Stuff your pocket with love notes or candy and hang in a spot to surprise someone you love!

Ribbon Heart

  • Light cardboard
  • Ribbon (We used Waverly Inspirations double ruffle edge ribbon in red and their scalloped grosgrain ribbon with white edging detail)
  • Hot glue gun
  • Pencil
  • Ruler

ribbon heart 1 - 3

  1. Draw a line in the middle of a 5″ x 6″piece of cardboard.
  2. Cut lengths of ribbon to attach in a diagonal pattern on each side of the line.
  3. Using a hot glue gun, glue the ribbons to the cardboard on one side of the line.
  4. Repeat on the opposite of the line.
  5. Cut a heart shape out of the ribbon covered cardboard.
  6. Experiment with some more with fabric, ribbon and other embellishments. Cut hearts out of your results!
  7. Give to someone you love! P.S. These are great grouped together in a small fabric wrapped box with a sweet note.

I Heart U Clipboard

  • Paintbrush (We used Waverly Inspirations 1/2″ stiff craft brush)
  • Clipboard
  • Craft Paint (We used: Red – Waverly Inspirations High Gloss Multi-Surface Acrylic Paint in Crimson, Silver – Waverly Inspirations Metallic Multi-Surface Acrylic Paint in Silver, White (to make light pink) – Waverly Inspirations Multi-Surface Acrylic Paint in White Opal)
  • Stick-on letters
  • Masking or painters tape

1. Tape off an area on the clip board on the diagonal.

2. Place the letters that spell out your message in the lower right corner working right to left to make sure that all of your letters fit. If you’re using a heart in your message, cut it out and place it with tape on the back to hold it in place.

3. Trace gently around the heart if you’re using one. You’ll be painting this freehand.

4. Remove the wax paper from the adhesive on the letters and attach them to the clipboard surface.

5. Paint in between your taped diagonal area. Use two coats for maximum coverage, letting the paint dry between coats.

6. Mix different paints together to create a custom color and finish like we did here. We mixed a high gloss red with a glittered white. Use your custom color for your heart or to embellish your diagonal metallic stripe.

We added high gloss red scalloped edge to our metallic edge and then dotted on our custom color to create a faux eyelet.

7. Clip a love note to the board and stash it where your Valentine will discover it!
