MLK National Day of Service

by Grace Bonney

Today is Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day, and in addition to honoring his memory and the legacy of his work, today is also a National Day of Service. Dr. King Jr. said, “Life’s most persistent and urgent question is, ‘What are you doing for others?’” and today is a wonderful chance to share some great resources for anyone who is able to use today, or part of today, to do just that — help others.

If you want to help out based on a specific topic or want to find a way to give back a few hours — or just want to find a place you can donate goods or funds — this website lets you type in your area code and find something within 15 miles (or closer) of your home. Just type in your zip code and you’ll be able to find something you can do to give back to your community. My hope is that today’s connections might lead to more regular work and volunteering within our communities that bring greater understanding and dialogue between all of us. xo, grace

  • Grace,
Thank you for allowing me to start my day with an awesome image of MLK.
Thank you as well for sharing your thoughts, ideas, and plans for Design*Sponge 2017.
Lastly, I absolutely agree that design magazines, websites, blogs, etc. continue to replace imagination and creativity with annoying trend/bore. Thank you for offering us all an alternative that is thoughtful, often meaningful, aesthetically fresh, and seemingly alive.

  • I usually do something of service but today was a day of activism instead. A few thousand people in my city did the same; seeing the streets filled with families who reject racism and white supremacy was really heartening.
