A Modern, Light-Filled Home Softened with Textiles

by Tawnee Madlen Walker

After falling in love with the creative spirit of south Austin, TX, Ryan and Beth Vanderkolk knew exactly where they needed to put down roots. With raising their adorable toddler in the forefront of their minds, they found the perfect neighborhood with all the amenities – a spacious park, pool, and mature trees – and decided to build their dream home.

Starting from scratch, the couple was able to design a home that completely matched their wants, needs, and personal style. “We wanted the house to feel super open and airy, with a ton of natural light,” Beth shares. They used large windows and high ceilings to make the home feel “… as close to living outside as possible,” with a beautiful view of trees and sky.

However, the abundance of natural light paired with white walls, expansive concrete floors, and an open-concept layout created a cold canvas that Beth needed to warm up. Using contacts she made in Istanbul, she found textiles in all the right sizes to fill her space. After she was done finding what she needed for her home, she continued sourcing pieces she loved and launched her own shop, Vander Interiors.

The Vanderkolks also wanted a home that’s designed around cooking, entertaining, and gathering. With an open-concept floor plan and a large backyard, it’s easy for their guests to feel welcome in their space and socialize. —Tawnee

A Modern, Light-Filled Home Softened with Textiles
You can't get a canvas more blank than a new home with white walls and cement floors. Thankfully, Beth and Ryan see eye-to-eye when it comes to decor, which made decorating their 2,000-square-foot house fun and easy.

Beth is sitting in her master bedroom next to her favorite obsession – a stack of imported kilim rugs and pillows for her store.

On top of her love of home decor, Beth has a large appetite for jewelry. She used a vintage bottle as a functional display for her bracelets.

This is a perfect little area made for getting ready (or waiting until someone is done getting ready). The pink pillow really pulls out the pink in the rug and the softer textiles are able to make this area feel a little cozier.

Beth's favorite rug is her 15-foot vintage runner in the hallway.

The interiors Beth admires the most “...master simplicity in the most unique way.” She accents calm color palettes throughout her home by using a reserved hand in her pops of color.

Above the bed, horseshoes from Marley and Alfie act as jewelry for her walls.

Most of the home is designed to enjoy the sunlight, including this cute seating area in the guest bedroom.

“We love hosting people, so it was important to us to have a home where we could hang out and cook with friends and family,” Beth says.

“This is our first time having polished concrete floors, and we love them. We’re so happy we didn’t go with wood; these are so much easier to keep clean.”

The Vanderkolk family’s favorite thing about their home is how it’s surrounded by large trees. To them, seeing trees framed in their windows is like artwork.

With plenty of seating, their living room can host everything from movie nights to large get-togethers.

“We also really love the stained cedar entryway (inside and out) and the matching sliding barn door to the pantry.”

“I think the most challenging part is having a toddler in an open-concept home. We struggle to keep toys contained!”
