10 Second Shop Tour: Burrow Patisserie

by Maxwell Tielman

It seems fitting that Ayako Kurokawa, the owner of Brooklyn’s newly-opened Burrow Patisserie, is the former patissier of The Modern at MoMA. Although it’s no surprise to find an artistically appointed café in DUMBO, it is surprising to find one with an equally beautiful kitchen. Neatly organized and filled with lovely tools of the trade, Ayako’s kitchen is not only home to the wonderful aromas of freshly-baked cookies and melting chocolate, but a tiny collection of artwork and paintings, displayed here and there about the space. This clear eye for art and design carries all the way through to Ayako’s own work—exquisitely crafted baked goods (occasionally in the forms of animals and people) that are as epically delicious as they are beautiful. Despite a small size that rings true to the establishment’s name, Burrow’s offerings are big on taste—delicious, decadent taste. Definitely try the hot chocolate.
