Interview: Darcy Miller Nussbaum & Giveaway!

When we decided on this month’s family theme, the first person I thought to interview was Darcy Miller Nussbaum. Darcy is perhaps best known as the editorial director of Martha Stewart Weddings, but I think of her as the most dedicated documenter of special moments I know. In addition to her work with Weddings, Darcy is a talented and committed scrapbooker and throws some of the sweetest and most well-planned celebrations in the business. From fun children’s parties to elegant weddings, Darcy is constantly coming up with clever ways to celebrate the people you love most in your life. So today I’m thrilled to share her interview about families, celebrations, scrapbooking and how she loves to honor special moments or times in her family’s life.

As a very special surprise, Darcy was kind enough to help us coordinate a huge giveaway to go with her post! In addition to goodies from Martha Stewart’s Craft line and Avery, one lucky winner will receive a package with a signed copy of Darcy’s Our Wedding Scrapbook, gifts from Pinhole Press, Graphic Image, Paper Source and a Dennis Daniels Scrapbox. These are all of Darcy’s hand-chosen favorites, so this is a very special prize to receive. To be eligible, please leave a comment below (the deadline is Monday at 10am EST) about a memory or moment in time that is special to you and why you’d like to commemorate it (and how, if you already have an idea).

Spring Flowers

Happy first day of spring! I grew up in the south, where March usually brought warmer weather. Here in New York, it’s been rain, hail and snow. But I’m not complaining because I know flowers are in my future. In the meantime, I’m tiding myself over by looking for all things flowers. If you want some more floral inspiration, check out Sneak Peeks: Best of Floral. — Amy Azzarito

Goodbye, Winter Blooms

As winter makes its slow creep into spring, we are taking a moment to celebrate! New Englanders at heart, we jump at the chance to rejoice in making it through yet another cold and dark winter. Last month’s dreams of sunny southern California melt away with the snow as we start hanging up our down coats. We wanted to politely say goodbye to the flower friends that have gotten us through the dark months and get ready for the beautiful spring blooms that will soon fill our studio. Thank you, anemone, for giving us your soft petals and dark centers and for adding a touch of elegance to the white of winter. Privet berry, we will think of you fondly in July when we are barefoot and eating fresh blueberry pies. Thank you, winter blooms, for reminding us that there is life during the colder months.  — The Ladies of Forêt

Removable Wallpaper by Chasing Paper

As much as I love the lack of repair work involved in being a renter, it always bums me out to be prohibited from making major changes like cabinets, flooring and wallpaper. I have a little tear-out booklet of wallpaper that I’m dying to try one day, but they’ve all been off-limits until I can afford a home. Thankfully, more and more designers are tackling the realm of removable wallpaper. Chasing Paper is one of them, and it just launched a line of colorful graphic papers. I know bold colors aren’t for everyone, but I always think bathrooms and closets are the perfect places to go a little nuts with bright colors or prints. Chasing Paper has around 10 designs to choose from, but my favorites are above and below. To make wallpaper installation easier on small spaces, Chasing Paper is currently selling paper in 2’ x 4’ panels ($25 each), so you can order a small quantity for a more petite space (like your average NYC bedroom or a backsplash). Click here to check out their current selection and shop online. I’m crossing my fingers that they do more guest collections with contemporary designers so that those of us who love unique design but not the permanence of wallpaper can have a wide range of options. Thanks to Anne for the tip! xo, grace

Living In: Best in Show

If the phrase “God loves a terrier” doesn’t mean anything to you, I’ve got a movie you need to see. In honor of this month’s Family + Pets theme, we racked our brains thinking of the best movies that celebrate how special pets are in a family’s life. I can never handle movies where pets are hurt or lost, so I chose a film that is the happiest, funniest and most heart-warming celebration of fuzzy friends: Best in Show. A look inside the lives (canine and human) of those competing in the fictional Mayflower Dog Show, Best in Show is perhaps best known for the obsessive owners behind the adorable dogs. Parker Posey is an uptight Starbucks-drinking Weimaraner owner, Christopher Guest is a bloodhound owner who also happens to love ventriloquism and, my favorite, Eugene Levy and Catherine O’Hara are a couple so dedicated to their terrier that they record an album of terrier songs. No matter which couple or dog is your favorite, this is a film worth watching — and re-watching and re-watching. The laughs — and the cute dogs — just keep coming. Here’s to Busy Bee, Proud Mary and Loopy and Harlan Pepper who just couldn’t stop “namin’ nuts.” xo, grace

Make It Yours: Sarah Davison

The first day of spring is March 20. That’s Wednesday. I wish someone would let the weatherman in the sky in on that little fact. We’re dyeing eggs today in the Design*Sponge office while snow is falling outside. I feel like I’m Living In: Groundhog Day, and every day is winter. To cheer myself up, I was looking through the sneak peeks that feel particularly spring-like. Sarah Davison’s home is one of my favorites. It feels relaxed and calm. Sarah lives in a Spanish Mission-style building overlooking Sydney’s Tamarama Beach. I haven’t decorated with purple since I was eleven years old and claimed that pink and purple were my favorite colors. The purple here is definitely of a more grown-up variety than what was found in my childhood room. Paired with greens and neutrals, it feels sophisticated and spring-like, which is just what I’m looking for. Now, if only I could get a sun with my purple. — Amy Azzarito
