concrete grandfather clocks

When it comes to materials I’d use in my home, concrete isn’t the first that comes to mind. But I think it’s time I put aside my concrete prejudice and embrace how utterly cool and modern it can feel. It’s that coolness (in the form of actual physical coldness) that usually scares me, but this painfully chic concrete grandfather clock might make me change my mind. Its monolithic nature may be too stark for some, but I could see this looking right at home in any modern home where natural materials are embraced in a big way. Forsbergform, the company that designed the clock, also created concrete tables that you can check out right here. Here’s to concrete creeping into design a bit more this year . . . as long as it can find a way to stay warm. xo, grace

crankbunny tattoo cards

I’ll be honest, I’m having a hard time focusing today because all I can think about is last night’s Golden Globe Awards. All those green sequins? It was like a beautiful, shimmering ocean of glitter, and I still can’t get that color out of my mind. GREEN. SEQUINS. (If you come back in a few weeks and find D*S suddenly looks like a green sequined dress, you’ll know why.) The only thing distracting me from dresses this morning is a cute series of cards from Crankbunny at Etsy. I know tattoos aren’t for everyone, but if you’re inclined toward the more permanent ink arts, these cards and paper dolls are for you. I love the Victorian feel and think they’d be perfect for a non-traditional Valentine’s Day card or just a little hello for your tattooed sweetie. weekly wrap up + dupatta nara love

This week has been a blur of paint fumes, planning and agonizing over how best to organize our new office space and the year ahead. As much as I love making big decisions, sometimes I feel overwhelmed and the best way to remedy that is to window-shop for warm fuzzy things. At the top of my list right now is this gorgeous red-on-red scarf from Matta. I love the rich red tones and feel like it would be the perfect jumping off point for a room design. I’d love to see a couch upholstered partially (just the back and bottom) in dark red and then the cushions in a lighter red. That sort of slight variation in colors always makes me smile. If you’re looking for a gorgeous scarf to splurge on, you can click here to pick up one of these. Until then, I hope you all have a wonderful weekend and I’ll see you back here on Monday! xo, grace

in the kitchen with: bee yinn low’s pan-fried dumplings

I love dumplings of all types and rarely pass up the opportunity to try out highly recommended dim sum restaurants. Because they are so easy to make, I also like trying them at home, so I’m very excited about this week’s recipe for Pan-Fried Pork, Shrimp and Cabbage Dumplings from Bee Yinn Low. Pork and shrimp is one of my favorite dumpling combinations. If you love dumplings and are interested in a vegetarian option, try our recipe from Helen Yuet Ling Pang for Mushroom Dumplings. If you’re vegan and would like a recipe, try the fabulous recipe for Vegan Wontons in our archive by Andrea Nguyen, the queen of Asian dumplings! (I can guarantee they are exceptional and easy to make!) — Kristina

outside in: worshipping winter citrus

Catching a winter cold? There is only one cure — a little vitamin C. The same holds true in the floral world; the bright spot on our winter horizon is the mountains of fresh, seasonal citrus fruits being harvested in Florida and California. If you’re lucky, you can find kumquats, oranges and lemons on the branch in gorgeous, mottled colors to use in arrangements or tablescapes, like this bouquet of winter flowers made in West Palm Beach. Florida happens year round, so here’s how to add some to your dreary winter days. — Amy Merrick

The humble orange — perfect for snacking or sipping but also a linchpin for many a florist in the cold months when attractive branches are scarce. The variety of winter citrus colors and sizes is astonishing. Lemons arrive in bright green or pale yellow, oranges in mottled greens and kumquats in deep tangerine. The foliage left on the branch makes a nice filler but can be removed so the fruit pops on its own.

covet garden: bookhou issue

If there’s one thing I love most when it comes to publications, it’s embracing a focused format. I relish magazines, blogs and zines that obsess over one niche topic and really enjoy diving into such a specific world. Covet Garden is a Canadian online magazine that focuses each of its monthly issues on a single home in Toronto and the family behind it. Fed up with not getting to know more about the real people behind beautiful homes, the team at Covet Garden decided to dedicate each page of the issue to the people inside- from their personal style to their backgrounds. I really love this hyper-focused look at the people behind a great home and was excited to see that this month’s issue was all about John and Arounna from Bookhou. They’re a fantastically talented couple and their home (and storefront) reflect the couple’s organic-but-modern personal style. Click here to check out the latest issue and learn all about the home and people behind Bookhou. xo, grace
