I love seeing how gig posters and that style of artwork have trickled down into everything from packaging to personalized wedding invites. Erin Jang created these invitations for a blues-rock-loving couple that got married in the South this summer. The couple and their family traveled from Toronto to Clarksdale, Mississippi, so they wanted the invitations to point out great stops along the road (BBQ restaurants, the Jack Daniels distillery, famous music landmarks, etc.). The color palette of these invites is so “summer in the South” perfect that I can practically see the heat waves rising off them. Even though the warmer temperatures are now behind us, it’s always fun to look back and get a few final glimpses of the colors and themes that made summer so fun. Click here to check out more of Erin’s design work online. xo, grace

This weekend my parents were in town and we ended up talking about music. My dad was lamenting that no one bought albums or non-digital music anymore, which got me thinking about how much I miss record and CD packaging. My first job out of college was with a small record label in NYC and I’ll never forget how excited I was to attend a meeting with one of our artists to brainstorm CD packaging ideas. We went through stacks of inspiration CDs, dug out boxes of crazy materials being considered (a faux-fur cover was on the table- yikes) and wrote down page after page of artists that could be good to work with for a custom design. The sky was the limit and it reminded me of all the times I bought tapes and CDs when I was younger and how the artwork excited me as much as the music.

It feels like those days are all but gone, but thankfully a few bands haven’t given up on artwork. D*S reader Tyler sent over this link to an amazing video showing the band Field Days as they make one custom (the word ‘custom’ barely seems to do this amount of work justice) CD for their album ‘Projector‘. Everything is handmade here, from the CD sleeve (which is made by staining paper with colored water) and outer track listing to the artwork on the cover. Some of my favorite bands are still committed to this sort of DIY spirit and I’m so glad to see Field Days is as well. I was just typing the sentence “this makes me want to order one of these” and stopped myself. In between this sentence and the last I went to Field Days’ site and ordered one of these gorgeous handmade CD packages. The artwork alone is worth the cost and I’m so excited to listen to the music. If you’re up for some great new music and supporting a band that’s so dedicated to beautiful custom artwork and a handmade experience for its fans, click here to order a CD ($14.99) or album ($19.99). Thanks to Tyler for passing this on and thanks to Field Days for keeping the relationship between art and music so strong. xo, grace

I have a soft spot for illustrators. I’m not sure why, but they’re always the artists I seem to develop design-crushes on most easily. Thankfully Polly and Chris at Wrap decided to publish a magazine dedicated to illustration that will now feed my obsession.

With two issues under their belt, Wrap has already interviewed a slew of talented artists and designers and, with their latest issue, they decided to make the magazine itself part of the design process. Each issue can easily be taken apart and used as wrapping paper, which I love. It’s fun to tear things out and save it, but if you’re like me and end up with a stack of already-read magazines, it’s great to know that this can easily be reused. Wrap even perforated the back cover so it turns into eight note cards to coordinate with featured prints in the magazine. You can check out (and order) the issue right here- thanks to Polly for the tip! xo, grace

Kate, Amy and I have been researching designers for our special summer project, and one of my favorites was part of an excellent article just published online at Good Magazine. Good rounded up 25 of their favorite female designers and illustrators (a must-read), and it was great to see Roxanne Daner included. Roxanne is based in LA, and I’ve been sort of obsessed with her hair-based artwork for a while now. I’m not sure why I love it so much, but the way she illustrates hair texture in her work makes me wish my hair was long again. You can see Roxanne’s full body of work online right here, or you can check out my favorite hair pieces right here. xo, grace

I’ve always been a bit of a packaging nut, so when I discovered The Dieline I felt like I’d found my home away from home. So when I heard that Megan, their vintage packaging editor, had branched off to start her own blog devoted solely to vintage design I was even more excited. Vintage Me Oh My is Megan’s love song to all things vintage design, ranging from packaging and print to typography and film. While trying to keep myself awake through the jet lag last night I browsed all of Megan’s archives and loved how much inspiration she’d gathered in so little time. If you’re a fan of vintage type, packaging or just great design, this is a fantastic site to add to your radar. Click here to check it out- thanks, Megan! xo, grace

I really love good identity design. When a designer can carry a theme through web, print and product design, it feels like everything clicks into place. A Friend of Mine design studio in Melbourne created these business cards, web and mobile designs for Bookish, a platform for distributing, selling and reading e-books. As much as I love the site design, my favorite pieces are the colorful bookmarks with adorable bespectacled heads poking over the top. The entire design, from the bright red colors to the letter “B” made of eyeglasses, is so sweet and wonderfully “bookish.” Click here to check out the full identity project and more from AFOM right here.
