diy ottoman giveaway at tonight’s book event!

Tonight I’m so excited to add an extra special surprise to our book signing and craft demo at Anderson’s Books in Naperville, IL (outside of Chicago). Shelly Leer of Mod Home Ec, who shared her sewing expertise with us in Design*Sponge at Home, was kind enough to make a custom ombre-dyed ottoman that we’ll be giving away at tonight’s event! If you’re in the Chicago-are I hope you’ll come join us for a chance to win (event details here). Thank you so much again to Shelly! xo, grace

More about Shelly: Shelly Leer owned an upholstery business in Indianapolis for fifteen years. Now she’s teaching classes including Beginning and Intermediate Upholstery, Bench and Ottoman classes, Sewing Machine Basics, Pro Pillow Workshops and still to come, Headboards. She writes a weekly DIY column in the Indianapolis Star and is thrilled that her simple slipcover project is featured in Design Sponge at Home.

d*s book tour: birmingham event details!

Birmingham holds a special place in my heart ever since my trip there this spring. Not since my initial trip to Savannah in 2006 have I ever felt so welcomed and cared for by people I’d never met. The hospitality, kindness and generosity of everyone we got to know on that trip was overwhelming, and I found myself wondering how soon I could go back again (even just to eat at Frank Stitt’s restaurant). So I’m thrilled to be heading back down to Alabama for our book signing and a craft demo at Books-A-Million. I’m going to be showing people how to make a great cupcake/cake display stand and how to customize it in several ways (new techniques we didn’t show in the book or online) for the holidays. The RSVP details are below. I hope to see you there! xo, grace

Event: Book Signing + Craft Demo at Books-A-Million
Date: Tuesday, November 1st, 2011
Location: Books-A-Million, 757 Brookwood Village, Birmingham, AL 35209
Time: 6:30–8:00pm (Craft Demo 6:30–7:00pm, Signing 7:00–8:00pm)
Details: I’m going to be demoing one of my favorite projects from the book — upcycled cake and cupcake stands made from vintage plates and candleholders. I’ll be showing everyone how to customize the look in several ways, including for the holidays. We’ll provide snacks and drinks, and the event will benefit the local artist charity, Space One Eleven.
RSVP: RSVP isn’t required, but recommended. Please sign up right here.

d*s book tour: athens georgia event details!

It’s no secret that I have a major love affair going on with Georgia. The second I stepped off the plane in Savannah in 2005 I knew I’d found a second home. The entire state feels like my home away from home and I’ve so enjoyed getting to visit various parts of the state over the past few years. One of the cities I’ve heard so much about but haven’t had much time to visit is Athens, GA. This amazing college town is such a hotbed of amazing music, art and food that I knew I had to make time for a special event there. So, before our Atlanta event we’re going to drive to Athens to host an event that I’m incredibly excited about: a book signing/party with live music! This event will be unlike the rest on the tour because we’re really hoping to make this event a fun get together where people can relax, have a drink and listen to some fantastic local music. I’ll be signing books (we’ll have books available for sale as well) but I’ve also secured The Corduroy Road, the amazing Athens band that played at my wedding, to do a live acoustic set at the party! So if you’re in the area I hope you’ll come down and join us- this is going to be such a special event and we’re so thrilled to finally be visiting Athens. Details are below! xo, grace

Event: Book signing/party and Live Music Peformance
Date: Wednesday, November 2nd, 2011
Time: 7-9pm
Location: Athens Cine, 234 West Hancock Avenue, Athens GA 30601
Details: We will be celebrating the launch of Design*Sponge at Home and signing books. There will also be a fantastic live acoustic performance by Athens locals, The Corduroy Road. The event is free and we will have non-alcoholic drinks and snacks available. (Alcoholic drinks will be available for sale at Cine). This event will benefit the local charity, Athens Art Council and we will have a backdrop designed by D*S’s own Ginny Branch Stelling, against which you can take photos with your friends (courtesy of W Scott Chester)
RSVP: Space is limited because of the venue size so please RSVP here to reserve a space. We expect this space to fill up rather quickly.
