When Rebecca (@bexmarie) and Jared Raskind (@raskindphoto) moved from a 1930s Spanish-style home into a contemporary house in Glendale, CA, they wanted to approach their design choices from a fresh perspective. The amazing views from the floor-to-ceiling windows in the living room initially drew the couple in, but once they realized the potential in creating a stunning modern kitchen and open floor plan, they had to give it a go. They knew the renovation would be worth it — and they were right!
In order to create the large, modern kitchen of their dreams as part of the overall renovation, Rebecca, SVP of Los Angeles-based PR firm CLD PR, and Jared, one half of the celebrity and entertainment photography duo Smallz + Raskind, first considered hiring an interior designer. “We interviewed a few designers we liked and several of them told us they wouldn’t be able to work within our budget, Rebecca shares. “I am thankful this happened because we decided to design the kitchen ourselves. It was a really fun process and we are so thrilled with how it turned out in the end.” When Rebecca and Jared rolled up their sleeves and began designing the kitchen themselves, they ended up embracing the process from start to finish. The original, closed-off kitchen was opened up to become part of the large, open-plan living space. When the couple saw the soaring ceilings in the adjacent family and dining rooms, they also knew that removing the drop ceiling would work wonders in the new kitchen and serve their design vision at large.
The true highlight in the recently completed kitchen is the Bianco Venatino marble slab wall behind the range, a feature that Rebecca and Jared had in mind from the very beginning. To accomplish their vision, the couple made the bold but necessary choice to remove a row of windows. “We really wanted a marble feature wall and that was the only way to accomplish that. It was a little risky […], but the kitchen still receives so much natural light from the living room; it was well worth it,” Rebecca notes. In the end, the couple couldn’t be happier with how their kitchen turned out. Now it’s the perfect spot for Rebecca, Jared, and their twenty-month-old daughter Zoe to cook together and enjoy the company of friends and family — “it really is everything we could have asked for.” —Sofia
