We all know the impact that lighting can have in virtually any space. Today we’re taking a look at four new collections of transitional lighting – meaning fixtures that can be used indoors and outdoors. We’re partnering with Crystorama, a family-owned business celebrating 60 years, to share their new collaborations with designers Brian Patrick Flynn and Libby Langdon. The idea that transitional lighting provides continuity from outside to inside means that creating that outdoor “room” suddenly becomes a little easier.
Transitional fixtures can be functional and decorative, lending style, brightness, and mood for outdoor entertaining. Think easy elegance for an al fresco dinner or catch-up conversations with family or friends on the front porch as the sun sets.
We thought it would be fun to pair some of our favorite indoor/outdoor lighting fixtures from their new collections with some of our most popular outdoor spaces from our archives.

First up, is the magical deck behind the home of Maaike and Onno in the Netherlands. This outdoor space shows how easy it is to create a lush garden table of planted terra cotta pots. The striking vintage-modern furniture extends the home’s style outdoors, so we paired this comfortable look with the three-tone outdoor ceiling mount fixture by Brian Patrick Flynn from his Capsule collection. We can imagine this fixture illuminating the garden from above a back screen door, as easily as we can picture these fixtures providing soft lighting in a powder room.
This charming patio is just beyond the Berkeley, CA home of photographer and cookbook author, Erin Scott. For this space we chose a wall mount lamp from Libby Langdon’s Sylvan collection. The matte black frame over the frosted shade melds with the simple façade in the background, giving it both angles and curves that complement the lush garden surround.
This large, airy porch at the Pittsburgh home of Shawn Aversa and Jamie McAdams is the perfect setting for cocktails and conversation. For this space we chose another piece from the Sylvan collection. This time, a large chandelier illuminates the porch and sets the mood for late-night chats. The same piece could easily fit into this Victorian home’s entryway.
A little about the designers and collections above:
Crystorama has been producing beautiful lighting options for 60 years and they chose to collaborate with Brian Patrick Flynn and Libby Langdon on their first outdoor collections to help customers merge their indoor and outdoor spaces and create outdoor “rooms” with great lighting and great design.
Brian Patrick Flynn started his career as a news producer before crossing over from network to cable to focus on home improvement and design projects. Flynn’s aesthetic is eclectic and tailored. “I like just about every single style, from traditional and country to mid-century modern and transitional. What intrigues me most is to combine styles that aren’t usually paired together — like contemporary and casual — to create something new, or to take a vintage look that’s been around forever and make it completely original and relevant by changing the material or finish.”
His recent collections for Crystorama do, indeed, pay heavy attention to shape and finish to give a distinct design direction to outdoor spaces.
Designer, author and home makeover TV personality Libby Langdon is the creative force behind New York City-based design firm Libby Interiors, Inc. Her residential and commercial projects embody her easy, elegant, everyday style and reflect her signature look of combining classic lines with a chic, modern twist. Libby’s latest outdoor lighting collections in collaboration with Crystorama range from the simple lines of the Sylvan collection, to the more ornate fretwork of the Jennings collection.
