In the Netherlands, a Magical Home in the Middle of the Woods

Some homes feel so unique and special that I’m almost certain that they’ve been sprinkled with a little bit of fairy dust. Liesbeth and Jan Disbergen’s home in Epe, the Netherlands, tops my list of homes with a magical feel and I’m sure you’ll see why. Surrounded by beautiful leafy forests, the house exists in its own wonderful little world, unaffected by busy lives and hectic schedules (at least in my imagination). Its appearance is as unique as it is enchanting — without even peeking inside, it’s clear that this is a special house, with architectural details you don’t stumble upon every day. Checkered and stained glass, dark green steel window frames and large double doors are some of the most eye-catching features of this stunning mid-century brick home.

It’s not just the house that creates such a charming atmosphere — in fact — most of the credit goes to Liesbeth and Jan along with their furry and feathered friends. When guests arrive, the couple’s two peacocks might appear from the woods to welcome visitors onto the property. Dex, the border collie, then eagerly waits on the patio to lead friends inside, where Liesbeth and Jan’s colorful and creative world is unveiled in the most delightful fashion.

Liesbeth, designer and founder of the quirky and colorful lifestyle brand Sloppop Yeah, and Jan, COO of Polyganics, first set eyes on their secluded house just over a year ago. They had been looking for an older home for a while and weren’t afraid to take on one that needed updating. After visiting their house for the first time, there wasn’t much to debate — they immediately knew it was the one.

As nothing had been done to the house in 25 years, Liesbeth and Jan had several repairs to tick off their to-do list when they first moved in — fixing the leaking roof and gutters were some of the most notable projects. To update the house on the inside, the couple painted all the walls white but kept the original dark green details, such as doors and window frames. To let in more sunlight, they also cut down some trees that stood too close to the house. The white and green color palette turned out to be the ideal starting point for the couple’s personal taste. By bringing in a range of delicious colors and by mixing vintage pieces with contemporary design, Liesbeth and Jan were able to create their own style that has brought the house to life.

Liesbeth’s love for color and pattern runs deep and is evident in both her Sloppop Yeah brand and her home. Surprising effects, like diagonal pink stripes in the hallway and a neon lightning bolt hung on the dining room wall, reveal the playfulness that is such an integral part of Liesbeth and Jan’s aesthetic. Their eclectic style peaks in the beautifully decorated living room. It’s a space where pattern play, bright accent colors, unique art and heirlooms leave you breathless and inspired. How Liesbeth and Jan ever get rid of their guests is a mystery to me — I’d want to stay in this magical home forever! —Sofia

Playing the piano in the living room is a treat for the eyes as well as the ears — the view of the forest serves as wonderful inspiration for musical expression, as does the colorful poster of David Bowie.

This cozy corner in the living room is the ideal spot to wind down. Liesbeth and Jan have used various pastels around their home — the light blue armchair is from IKEA.

Another green sofa grounds the opposite end of the living area. Various plants add to the predominantly green color palette of the space.

The couple has made sure to update their home with respect for its original style and details. The dark green steel window frames are a defining original feature that both Liesbeth and Jan love.

The dining room window includes stained glass artwork with bird motifs. “We like to collect art from Dutch designers, like the painted eye poster from Valesca van Waveren, a Dutch illustrator,” Liesbeth shares. Piles of firewood are stored outside in preparation for colder days.

The dining room is a mix of old and new. For a playful feel, Liesbeth and Jan placed different chairs around the round Gisben table. The lightning bolt-shaped lamp by Zilverblauw adds a bold touch against the swallow wallpaper by Karwei.

The kitchen was originally yellow with dark blue tiles, but Liesbeth and Jan chose to paint it all white. Pots, pans and other useful kitchen tools add happy pops of color in this otherwise neutral space.

“After we removed a big cupboard this unfinished wall appeared, which we actually like,” Liesbeth says. The raw brick wall stands in perfect contrast with the baby blue Smeg fridge. The metal rack holds cookbooks and various useful everyday items.

The green tiles by the bathroom door are original to the house and were uncovered when Liesbeth and Jan ripped out some outdated wallpaper.

A pink striped wall along with a collection of blue vintage plates from Sweden cheer up the hallway. Liesbeth is a huge David Bowie fan and wanted to commemorate her idol in this space as well.

The diagonal stripes from the hallway are repeated in the master bedroom in a different color. Liesbeth loves to mix different linens and pillows for a happy and colorful feel. “We like to […] add playful details like the shoes on the shelf,” she adds. The mountain shaped pillow is by Sloppop Yeah.

Liesbeth loves the coziness that potted plants add to a space. The vintage desk belonged to Jan’s grandfather and is a beloved piece of furniture.
