Before & After: A Modern Multigenerational Family Home in Scarsdale, NY

by Annie Werbler

In order to make the Stillmans’ home of 35 years functional for the needs of their family today, Rose Praino of YDC Design worked with her Scarsdale, NY-based clients to clear out rooms full of memories before her process could even begin. “I do believe this was harder than they foresaw,” she admits. “On the flip side, because of the renovations, all three kids are rushing to call dibs on rooms for weekends and holidays.”

Rose’s clients, who are active grandparents and world travelers, asked her to make the space more habitable for an adult daughter and grandchild currently residing there. In this section of the house, she was tasked with creating kids’ and guest rooms, as well as bathrooms, with an open design that would accommodate different uses and aesthetic tastes, depending on the user at any given time. One room that was designed with special care was the client’s office. Previously, things just seemed to find their way into the space for storage. Rose created an elegant home office that touched on all the functional needs, even down to adding a sleeper sofa for company. Another challenge was the six-week timeline from initial design to orders, deliveries, and installation. Within this window, Rose and her company had to clear four rooms and gut two bathrooms, then rebuild them from the bottom-up.

Rose is grateful for her clients’ faith in her team throughout the speedy design and the renovation process. “The more a client trusts their designer, the more successful the outcome,” she says. “I feel like when the creative flow goes uninterrupted it almost always leads to something great. For each room, there was a vision — one in which the clients believed, and gave me the range I needed.” —Annie

Previously, the room functioned mostly as an office, though the bed occupied more square footage. Rose took everything out and started fresh in this combination space. "My client needed a home office far more than she needed another bed," she shares. Soft colors, dark florals, some shine, and functional pieces make it a retreat rather than just a workspace.

Pretty accessories with a hint of luxurious shine elevate the mood of the room against large-scale dark floral drapery panels.

Before, this guest room felt small and the room dark. Back in the day, this was perfect for a growing boy in a traditional home, but no longer functioned properly for adult visitors. After new window shades and draperies, a soothing coat of paint, and fresh, modern styling, the space feels wide open.

Clean walls in a medium grey, a fresh white ceiling, darker beam highlights, beautiful custom draperies, and a floor plan reorientation make the room seem large and inviting.

Before, the room had a crib, but nothing interesting or fun for a toddler. After, the space is a creative playground for the little girl who calls this hers.

A mini table and chairs in the nursery facilitate playtime. "The baby has even started to doodle on her white board," Rose adds.

This room has the best light in the house," Rose claims. "I went for a spa-like feel, using very light green on the walls, pairing it with a dusty rose sofa and all the tones between." Throw pillows, artwork, and a capiz shell chandelier add layers of light. Before, "the window was a victim of heavy wood shades and a puffy valance. The built-in was in really good condition and we decided to keep it."

New crackled blue glazed tile up to the ceiling, Carrera marble accents, and glossy white fixtures make this small bathroom feel twice as large as before.
