15 Cool Coffee Tables that Add Interest

by Lauren Chorpening

For me, a coffee table is the anchor of a living room. While large furniture and features like windows, sofas, fireplaces and media consoles make a box around the perimeter of a space, a coffee table adds personality, style and substance in the middle. It took me around three years in between getting rid of a DIY coffee table I had made in my early twenties to replacing it with a purchased piece. Three years is really too long to go without a coffee table (for me at least), but I didn’t want to commit to something that I didn’t really like or find interesting.

We’ve seen everything from repurposed carts to DIY pieces to upscale metallic tables on Design*Sponge, and we’ve rounded up some of the most creative and interesting ones. There are so many unique styles out there in every price range. If you need to replace or upgrade your living room anchor, take a look at these great options. –Lauren

Elif and Senthuran chose a set of three nesting tables placed side by side instead of finding a single piece for their coffee table. The varying heights of the tables create interest that one long table wouldn't be able to.

A coffee table doesn't have to be huge. Jordana's occasional table anchors the room but doesn't hinder the beauty of the color and pattern of the rug with its tall legs and smaller frame.

  • I find the painting on the wall papered wall in photo no. 10 really challenging. I really can’t say whether it works or not. It is so so different in colour, pattern, texture from the leafy wall-paper. (Although the maroon/red colour is present in the wall-paper and it is opposite to the green on the colour wheel and I can see with the furnishings and cushions they have introduced the turquoise and other colours in the painting). It is either a massive fail or sheer genius! Obviously DesignSponge is in the latter camp and I’m slowly coming around. Thanks for challenging me! Images like these inspire and make things interesting.

  • We’ve been living here for 4+ years and still no (official) coffee table. It’s more practical to let the kids play in the middle of the living room. But every month or so I crave and search for a suited one. Always on the lookout. And when I find the perfect one (I agree, no ‘just because’ stuff in the apartment!), the kids will have to find some other space haha
