10 Trends in Surface Design to Bring Home

by Lauren Chorpening Day

A space can be given interest through color, texture, furniture design, intriguing objects and art but one of the surest ways to convey a style or attitude in a room is through pattern. A single pattern or layers of them on cushions, curtains, walls and hand towels bring personality immediately into a space. New spins on timeless botanical, geometric, tribal patterns are almost always in style for homes while freehand illustration, people, pets and graffiti prints are contemporary takes on prints for soft goods and wall decor. Click through the slideshow to see 10 categories (and their gorgeous examples) we’re seeing in surface design recently. –Lauren

Florals. Is there anything as lovely as a floral pattern? We love that while designers showcase them differently over the years, flowers are always on trend. Anewal's floral wallpaper is modern and classic at the same time.

Graffiti. Once looked at as vandalism, now accepted as art, we love that it's making its way into homes. West Elm's curtain panels give a refined space a little street edge.

Tribal. There are so many pretty tribal designs to choose from. This basket from South African design firm, 100 Percent, is playing nice with the patterns around it.

Animals. Surface designers are making cute pets into prints. A pug pillow could work in a kid's room but it'd also be great in the living room.

  • I am really into patterns and illustrations at the moment.
I have recently heard about a Polish startup who work with illustrators and designers. You can also upload your own designs and prints and have it on locally made cotton. I think it’s such a great initiative.
