12 Unique Staircases that Make a Statement

by Lauren Chorpening

Staircases are a functional feature of many homes, but that doesn’t mean they can’t be beautiful. Homes with hand-turned banisters or sleek, modern steps give the entire space a personality. When a staircase is treated to intuitive design, it has the potential to make a huge statement.

We’ve seen gorgeous solid wood, metal spiral, concrete, minimalist and perfectly painted stairs come through the pages of Design*Sponge over the years, and we love seeing how a staircase can immediately show guests the aesthetic of the rest of the home. Staircases don’t just have to be a way to get from Point A to Point B — they are a design element in their own right, and these are a few of our favorites. –Lauren

  • Function before beauty. Some friends have a staircase that’s so steep, I hesitate to go up or down it. Plus the step at the top is a tiny bit taller than the rest. There is no reason– they have a ton of space for an easier angle. I have seen open stairs that are nice and airy, especially in the middle of a long, narrow space, but in general, I have dropped too many things to want open stairs where my spills would end up a floor below.

  • The black-and-white stairs seen insane to me. They are wayyyy too steep. I agree with the comment about the teal spindles; that would take weeks… But, I absolutely adore the wrought iron one, and pinned it when you first published it. It’s such a dramatic architectural statement, and so very visually stunning!

  • The fifth photo is of a Dutch home not Danish.

I love the first staircase. It’s a nice pop of colour without being too overwhelming.

  • There are some really cool staircases that you have presented. I think it says a lot about the place. It would also make sense to have something that stands out and is unique because you don’t see that every day.
