An Airy Bohemian Home in Los Angeles

by Lauren Chorpening Day

I can be a little bit color-averse when it comes to my home. I’m drawn towards greys, whites, metallics and wood tones. I think I’m scared of bringing in too much color because it just isn’t me. Of course, I love looking at colorful spaces and designs, and I’m inspired that we can all be impacted by color in different ways. When I first saw glimpses of Stephanie White’s home, I knew I had a kindred spirit in her. Stephanie’s home is primarily white, but it is in no way boring or undone — it’s filled with texture and pieces collected along the way.

Stephanie, designer of the ethereal wedding dress line ODYLYNE The Ceremony, and Patrick, a college-level academic advisor, moved into their 1920s Los Angeles, CA rental two years ago. Since then, their home has transformed to reflect their growing family. Their son Jaxson (4) and daughter Owen’s (18 months) needs have made the design even more thoughtful and practical without losing aesthetics. “Our decorating goal was to keep things simple and have open spaces for our children to be comfortable. I know how crazy decorating can get with two small children, so I tried really hard to keep things minimal. A lot of people ask us how we keep our white mostly-white! I can honestly say that is not easy, but it’s also not that difficult when you are a master at stain removals,” Stephanie says. “We also wanted a style that was not built directly around the children’s toys. We have closets that store a lot of their larger toys and they are always accessible when they want to have them. It is important that we found a happy medium to the design style that included us, as adults, and our children as well.”

The Whites are sentimental with an editing eye. Their collected pieces are seamlessly added into the design for them to enjoy. “I believe our aesthetic is always evolving as we are sort of collectors and are always collecting things from different places,” Stephanie says. “What I have learned is that it is easier to start simple, with neutral palettes, so you can grow upon the design style. What I love about our home is that I can see things that I have collected over a period of time that remind me of places we traveled or moments from the past that make me smile.” Stephanie and Patrick have made a whimsical place for their family to grow. –Lauren

The White family's living room is the heart of their home. This is where they spend most of their time together. The soft palette and textures make this an inviting space for the family and their guests.

"We love having a working fireplace. It just is one the many charming aspects to the space. Although the weather doesn't allow us to be frequent users of it, we love to design around it. Baskets from World Market help hold favorite blankets and hide toys when the kids are in school. One of my favorite pieces in this room is the wall hanging by Sonadora Handmade. It adds so much character to the room," says Stephanie.

"I love anything shiny and shimmering and I just couldn't get enough of having mirrored frames in the house. Our children love to look at the pictures in the frames and also love getting a glimpse of themselves in the mirrors," says Stephanie.

Stephanie's children enjoy playing in the space as much as she and Patrick enjoy entertaining in it.

"Awesome arches in the home built in the 1920s is a definite plus," says Stephanie.

"Our dining room also takes in great light and we can see the sun setting from this window. When the sun sets in a pink and lavender sky, this room illuminates so beautifully. This window also faces the street and our small patio, which is also really nice," says Stephanie. "The craftsman's table was custom made for us by these amazing vendors we met at the Rose Bowl Flea Market. We added some chairs we picked up at Blue Print in LA, which added a cool, modern feel to the room."

Stephanie does embrace a pop of color in the right setting. This pretty vignette on the dining room table brings the space to life.

"Our kitchen gives off beautiful natural light from the morning to the afternoon. All the tile in the kitchen is the original and is charming in its own right. We wanted to keep everything neutral with lots of greenery. Our ficus plants thrive in the space because of all the indirect sunlight in the corners," says Stephanie.

"With the cabinets and tiles being black and white, I wanted to keep the decor neutral and earthy. The nook is a perfect place for having our morning coffee or bringing in the laptop to answer emails. It is one of my favorite places to chat with my husband in the mornings before he heads off to work," says Stephanie.

"A white room helps me gain peace and calm and I really tried to translate that into my room. The beautiful wall hangings by my talented friend who owns WKND LA, which is being sold in Anthropologie, help center the room and brings in that tranquil spirit I wanted. All the bedding is by Anthropologie because I love their simplistic bohemian style. The dresser from IKEA is my score purchase. So modern and sleek and easy on the wallet. Our vintage mirror is one of my treasured pieces and I have had it for a long time," says Stephanie.

"Our room needed to function as a room my husband and I both felt comfortable in. It also needed to be a room where we could do some work for the business. I was weary of creating a 'work' space for the room, as I do not like to be reminded of that in a place I want to relax in. Therefore, we kept things clean and have things tucked away perfectly for when we are not working to add the tranquility to the room that we love so much," says Stephanie.

The peacock chair was a gift from Patrick to Stephanie. It is a treasured piece as she spent time nursing both of her children in the chair.

Jaxson's room is the most colorful and lively in the house. "This corner we spend lots of time with our son, reading and cuddling. We reupholstered his rocking chair when he was first born since we couldn't find anything that we loved that fit the aesthetic of his room. The painting of the zebras is a treasured vintage purchase I bought [it] before he was born. The shelves by Urban Outfitters [are] also great for storing treasured pieces we have collected over the years with our son. This shelf also holds some of our favorite go-to books from our beloved children's authors like Eric Carle," says Stephanie.

"We had our son's bed custom-made into a tent. What better way to transition him out of the crib and into a big boy bed?" says Stephanie. "He is often seen in there playing with his trains or looking at books. At night we bring in the flashlights and pretend we are outside with a laser twilight machine. His train table is his most beloved possession. He has a large collection of trains and is quite proud of them."

Stephanie and Patrick's daughter Owen has a blissful nursery. "Our daughter's room feels exactly like her cute and sweet personality. At 18 months, she is quite graceful and already loves to pick out all the things she likes. So it was important for us to keep a soft palette for her that felt youthful and refreshing. A lot of things were purchased during her first year and have a special place in our hearts," says Stephanie.

"One of my favorite corners. I have sat here many of times, waiting for her arrival. When she arrived, I nursed her here as well. To this day we, sit here together and read our favorite books," says Stephanie.

"It took me a long time to figure out what design style I was going to move forward with in our daughter's room. I knew that I wanted to keep things white with clean lines. The first purchase I made was the vintage rose gold mirror I purchased from Three Modern Vintage and I started to design around that," says Stephanie. "The shell hangings were the perfect complement to the mirror and the Moroccan blanket added a fun bohemian feel to the room. The daybed was added for another option for me to lay with her while she was [an] infant on those late-night feedings, as my husband works early in the a.m. It also serves for a guest bed, should we have anyone visit."

  • How do you enlarge the photos? They’re awfully small, especially for people who use a monitor that has a 1920 x 1080 resolution.

    • Kesha

I’m using the same monitor and don’t have any problems viewing- can you explain? They’re the same size as all photos on your site, which is 700 pixels wide.

  • Wow! DS is killing it with house tours this month, and this one is my favorite yet! I love all of the fiber art, and am so envious of your fiddle leaf fig. Great home!

  • Wow, your home is almost identical to mine! I love the armchair in the little boy’s room, since we got the same chair, it’s so comfy but don’t know whether to chuck or have it upholstered. Since using it to nurse two kids, it’s now a horrid state. I love how airy every room is!

  • Good Gracious!!! This is a space delivered directly from Heaven!!! Absolutely stunning. When can I move in? lol
