A Designer’s Serene Brooklyn Brownstone

by Grace Bonney

The network of incredible designers living and working in Brooklyn always blows me away. I feel like you could knock on every other door throughout the borough and find someone incredible and creative living inside. I first met designer Gauri Nanda through our mutual friend, Llubav (stay tuned for her home tour soon!). I’d heard of Gauri before, due to her impressive resume of product and tech designs (she created Clocky and Toymail), but had never met her in person. So I was delighted to discover that she was not only smart, talented and kind, but that she also had one heck of a beautiful home. Gauri moved into her Carroll Gardens, Brooklyn apartment years ago and began the process of renovating and updating the space to reflect her personal style.

Much like her products, Gauri’s home style is chic, minimal and all about simplicity. Brooklyn floor-through apartments tend to be incredibly dark in the central rooms because there are only windows on either end of the building. But Gauri totally opened up her space by painting just about every surface white and focusing on a few bold furniture choices to outfit the space. All-white interiors can feel cold and impersonal if they’re not done right, but Gauri balanced her space by adding antique furniture and textiles that bring a sense of warmth to her home. Gauri’s is a home I’ve admired for a long time, and I’m so thrilled to share a peek inside this lovely space today. Thanks so much to Gauri for welcoming us! xo, grace

The exterior feels like a traditional Brooklyn brownstone, but inside is something brighter and much more modern.

Gauri chose to paint the majority of the apartment's fixtures and flooring bright, glossy white -- from the library bookshelves to the ceiling molding to the wooden floors. The white opens up the space, shows off the incredibly tall ceilings and brightens up an area that would traditionally be quite dark (because of the lack of interior windows).

Gauri's dramatic shelves are filled with books and some of her own product designs, like a shiny gold Clocky to the right. The library ladder was painted white to match.

A collection of artwork and magazines sits on a vintage table in the living room. The ceiling height in the apartment is really spectacular, especially when accented by the molding detailing you can see here.

You can see my favorite detail of Gauri's home in this shot -- the antique brick pavers she had installed as part of the kitchen renovation.

The kitchen was a major renovation, including new cabinets, counters, a marble-top island and new lighting. The brick pavers on the floor are a unique touch that feels like bringing the outside in.
