Global, Bohemian Style in a Salt Lake City Rambler

by Lauren Chorpening

Kera and McSean Thompson left Utah five years ago when McSean was on a government assignment in Abu Dhabi in the UAE. While they were there, Kera made herself right at home, filling their place with things she could never get in the States. “My background and passion is in interior design and I completely fell in love with the textiles and design aesthetic of the region while we were there,” Kera says. She started an online business, Interwoven, where she could sell the authentic, beautiful textiles and home goods she was finding.

When McSean’s assignment was over, the Thompson’s and their three children wanted to find a Salt Lake City rental with enough space and personality. They found this 1960s rambler with 2,400 square feet and beautiful views. “In Abu Dhabi, we had a large, two-story open-concept beachfront apartment. We had several custom furniture pieces made, bigger in scale, to fit the space. We loved our home and the things we collected there, and decided to have everything freighted home. We were very worried that nothing would fit, but somehow, this rambler style fit everything perfectly!”

They’ve only been in their new home for six months, but it looks like they’ve been there forever. The Thompson family’s house is bright and bohemian and reflects their time abroad. The textiles and pieces they brought with them are the finishing touches in each room. “I tried to achieve a child-friendly home that reflects where we’ve been and where we come from,” Kera says. “I wanted a modern, functioning space with a global aesthetic. I’m constantly having the thought during the quiet moments that we are so lucky to be here! While this may not be our forever home, it will be forever in my heart.” —Lauren

The Thompson's rental home was an incredible find. With its large windows, wood burning fireplaces and exposed beams, it is definitely not a cookie-cutter house. The pieces they brought with them from the UAE bring color and life to the space.

"We have two beautiful wood burning fireplaces, that we had fun using this past winter, as well as a laundry chute which I never want to live without," says Kera.

"While finding treasures for my own home in local souks and on trips, I made the decision to create Interwoven, an online shop for curated artisanal home decor," says Kera. "I ran it out of my home, shipping worldwide and hosting local events, and continue to do that from my home here in SLC."

Kara's office houses her inventory listed on her site. The beautifully designed textiles everywhere have to be incredibly inspiring to work near.

The master bedroom has a neutral palette without being boring. Kera uses warm tones to balance the cool, colorless pieces.

"Friends and family always are shocked that we have only lived here for six months, because it does feel like we've been here forever," says Kera. "I owe that to our efficient packers, and my serious case of OCD."

Kera's inventory for Interwoven is a never-ending source of inspiration, and sometimes a source for pieces throughout her own home.

The home's architecture with nooks and crannies makes the space more functional and interesting. Kera had the walls painted with a custom light grey and added colorful, bohemian accents to bring the space to life.

"We were fortunate that we were able to unpack and get settled so quickly and have it feel like home," says Kera. "We had all the big pieces, but I've been able to add a few things from my favorite shops that I haven't been able to frequent out of the country like Target and Anthropologie, that have really completed the space."

"The only space I would call a challenge is our eat-in kitchen. While I really like the fact that it's smaller for the cleaning aspect, it has proven to be hard to fit our family of five. If the dishwasher and fridge is open at the same time, no one is getting through the small, galley-style floor plan. It's just a bit cramped," says Kera. "For our next home, I'm taking notes ... I don't need a huge kitchen, but having an island, and a larger eating area to accommodate guests, would be great."

"Our backyard is truly a sanctuary that feels so magical surrounded by aspen, oak, and pine, with lovely flowering bushes." says Kera. "We had a beautiful outdoor table built, and I can't wait to live out there this summer!"

"The house sort of magically fell into our laps, and I knew the moment I turned into the circle that this was it. My husband and I knew we wanted a place where the kids could have room to play and be safe playing outside, an established neighborhood with easy freeway access, close to shops and restaurants," says Kera. "This home and neighborhood has definitely exceeded all of those expectations."

  • Thanks for featuring a dwelling in our beautiful city of Salt Lake. It’s such a cool city, and so often neglected by style blogs. Lovely home.

  • Beautiful home. I really like the use of textiles and pillows. The house has such a comfortable and charming energy; I’m sure that guests don’t want to leave. I also love the exposed brick fireplace. I have the same style fireplace and I’m tempted to paint or sheet rock it but now I’m considering embracing the authenticity and patina of the bricks.

  • Beautiful home and beautiful products from your business. The coffee table in the family room is amazing!!!

  • What a beautiful home and an inspiring woman. As a designer who is about to hop across to the Middle East I found this post really wonderful and reassuring. Would love to hear more from Kera in the business section of Design Sponge. x

  • Stunning! I have family in Salt Lake City and never have I seen such a beautifully renovated home. The custom/modern furniture recreates the entire home. I would have never thought this was a 1960’s home. Great job Kera!
