DIY Hanging Plant Lamp
Lighting fixtures almost never take center stage in home decor because we have so many other things to be focus on, like furniture, rugs and artwork. But as this DIY project will prove, a little creativity goes a long way toward making something formerly overlooked become the star of a room. This project is all about finding more ways to add plants to your home by combining the idea of a hanging planter with a beautiful pendant lamp! This would be a great way to add some accent lighting to a dark part of your room while giving a light-loving-plant some time in the spotlight, both literally and figuratively. So, let’s get started! –Mette Jakobsen
Materials
– Round Bowl/ Sphere storage, or two similar bowls
– Wood block
– Thine wire
– Light fixture, socket and LED bulb
– Drill
– Two different drill bits, one that fits the lamp cord and another drill for the wire holes
– Pliers
Step 1: Drilling Hole For The Cord
– Place the top bowl on the wood block and drill a hole in the center for the cord.
Step 2: Drilling Holes For The Wire
Change drill bit and drill three holes for the wire – and do the same with the bottom bowl.
Step 3: Cutting The Wire
– Cut three equal lengths of wire.
Step 4: Threading The Cord
– Thread the lamp cord through the hole in the top bowl
Step 5: Combining Top and Bottom
Combine top and bottom bowl by threading the wire though top and bottom holes. Simply twist the wire to secure it.
Now just add your soil and plant and voilà! There you have it – a quick fix to bring a simple corner of your home back to life.
Plants decorations really make our homes fresher and greener in more than one way. Now it’s up to you to choose a plant for your plant-friendly pendant, or if you’re creating this for your home office you can use is as a sassy storage for your bits and bobs.
The floating look is like an optical illusion, yet one that is kind to the eyes and easy on the mind.
I love this! I’m also wondering what kind of plant that is. Thanks!
Like Gabriella I am wondering what kind of plant this is – having a plant so close to an electric light surely requires a tough specimen?
this is called a sweetheart vine or string of hearts.
thanks mom!

I love your ideas. They are always very inspiring.
Something that concerns me is the amount of heat generated by these hanging plant lamps. If the illumination source is too close, the high temperature of the lamps may burn the leaves or dry out the tissues due to rapid loss of water from the leaves.

As long as you keep this distance and focus on light-loving plants, standard CLF bulbs don’t give off enough heat to cause any problems.

I love this! It looks amazing but doesn’t seem hard to create at all. Definitely have to give this a shot, my home could use some greenery in it!
I think you want *two* bowls :)
the typo is still there…

Sorry, I’m in London right now for a conference and just saw this.

Hi! love this – where can I get that storage ball?
@Emberly, you might be able to use some of these spheres from Grand Brass: http://www.grandbrass.com/catalog.cfm?category=Brass%20and%20Finished%20Balls&subcategory=Two%20Piece%20Balls
I really like this idea of hanging plants in the way they are so subtle and gentle.
I can’t believe I missed this post since I subscribe to email updates of Design Sponge and monsterscircus.com.
I love all of Mette’s projects and this one is extra fabulous!
Also thanks for the link to the spheres at Grand Brass.
I simply love it!
I wondering if this would work with a grow light in a dark bathroom??
Loved your post Grace! How did you come up with this idea? It looks really original!
I can’t see the whole thing (where is it plugged in, what is the top of the cord hanging from?), and I don’t understand the light fixture part of this at all. Can I just buy it as one piece (but buy a separate light bulb, I get that part) from Home Depot, etc.? It says “light fixture, socket and bulb” for materials needed, so do I buy a fixture and socket as two separate items? And, then what? Should just go to Home Depot, show them this project and get help with just the light fixture part? Also, does a person need an electrician to install/do anything? Boo hoo, if this wasn’t so neat looking, I would just skip it and not embarrass myself with these questions. Sigh.
So pretty and unique! Love this!
