Behind the Bar: Prairie Rose’s Long Kiss Goodnight

Prairie Rose, the author of Bit By A Fox cocktail blog, is back with us for this month’s Behind the Bar. In honor of Valentine’s Day tomorrow, she has developed a cocktail called the Long Kiss Goodnight, based on an exchange about using some seasonal citrus, and something I already had on my bar cart, such as the Buffalo Trace bourbon we used in the Lutheran. The Long Kiss Goodnight

1 1/2 oz Bourbon
3/4 oz Grand Marnier Liqueur
3/4 oz Blood Orange/mandarin/clementine juice
Sparkling wine
Pomegranate seeds for garnish

In an ice filled shaker, combine the first three ingredients. Shake until well chilled. Strain into a large, chilled coupe glass. Top with champagne and pomegranate seeds.

Why Prairie loves this recipe: You know how an especially yummy cocktail can be like a really good make-out? Well, that’s what this is: The Long Kiss Goodnight, a riff on my New Year’s Eve cocktail, the Auld Lang Syne. I love the combination of bourbon, orange liqueur and bubbly with just a touch of blood orange juice to really highlight the orange essence in the Grand Marnier. I’m also obsessed with the floating pomegranates in this cocktail. They look so lovely gliding above the bubbles in a coupe glass!
