#DS Lettering

I have a healthy obsession with hashtags. I say healthy because I don’t walk around actually saying “hashtag” all the time, but I do find them fascinating and incredibly useful as ways to sort and organize images on social media* channels, especially Instagram. I’ve found so many new artists, companies, places to travel and even friends through hashtag challenges, so I’m excited to announce a new one for June: #DSLETTERING.

After watching the documentary Sign Painters by Faythe Levine and Sam Macon, I started following more and more artists online who paint signs by hand. But my interest in hand-lettering didn’t stop there. It extended from beautiful, gold-leaf window signs on to stationery, personalized luggage and just about anything else that can be dressed up with a little lettering. There is absolutely an art and a real skill behind exquisite lettering, and this month’s challenge is about celebrating and showcasing that art everywhere you see it. So when you’re out and about, snap a picture of eye-catching lettering you see near you (signs, cards, details on packaging) and upload them to Instagram or Twitter with the hashtag #DSLETTERING. We’ll choose our favorites to post here (and on our social channels) at the end of the month! I can’t wait to see the gorgeous lettering you all find. [Please note: if you know the name of an artist you’re photographing for this, please include that information in your caption.] xo, grace

When I was in college, I worked at a shop that had all sorts of handmade items. One of the artists was a hand painted sign maker. The wife of the team just simply painted the lettering without outlining or anything. The font design was beautiful.

Lovely! I’m pretty obsessed with hand lettering as well lately.

Can we post our own work too?
I’m working on a great lettering project right now, but sadly I’ve signed an NDA so I can’t show it… maybe just bits & pieces?
