Remember that post I did on 14 Florists to Follow on Instagram last month? Yep, it’s already due for an update. There seems to be an endless stream of incredible flowers on my favorite social media platform right now and I already have a great, new (local!) designer to follow: Ingrid Carozzi of Tin Can Studios. A graphic designer turned florist, Ingrid creates beautiful arrangements that her clients can buy online or custom order for private and professional events. I’ve been swooning over her work for a few weeks now, so I asked if we could peek inside a day in her life. From gathering flowers at the market to walking to her daughter to school and meeting a colleague about a potential book (!), Ingrid’s day is full of the sort of beauty I dream of on a regular basis. So after posting this, I think I may need to tag along with her soon. xo, grace

“Me in my studio in my studio in Red Hook, Brooklyn, just a short bike ride from home.”

“Walking my daughter Stella (in the middle with blue hat) to school together with her friends, Ella and Jack. Today was dress-like-twins day, hence the girls’ matching clothes. Fortunately, we live near her school and my studio, which means I can push it to the last minute to bike down to the studio and/or to the flower market in the city.”

“I usually make a quick morning stop for coffee, here at Café Pedlar in Cobble Hill, while I go over emails and organize my calendar before hopping back on the bike to head over to Manhattan and the flower district.”

“Once at the market, I try to move fast so I don’t miss the best stems. My days feel so short and sometimes I’m actually running… at the market, to meetings, to a photoshoot, etc. Here, I’m scoping out flowers for a special event the next day. The flowers will soon be delivered to the studio where three of my florists are getting ready to condition them. We’ll start making around 40 centerpieces as soon as everything is set.”

“I mounted this huge basket to my bike so that I can bring a lot of stuff with me. Stella calls it my ‘pizza guy’ bike. The ride back to Red Hook takes 50 minutes, but often longer by subway, so I’m really not losing time either, plus the views from the Brooklyn Bridge are a huge bonus. I bring back a smaller amount of flowers so I can start making a mock-up as soon as I get back to Brooklyn.”

“Once I’m back, and the flowers are in water, I start experimenting with some copper and brass paints that I apply to one of our signature cut wine bottle vases. As a student at Parsons, I was taught the importance of hand skills. As a result, I value the creating of the vases every bit as much as I do the arranging of the flowers.”

“More flower conditioning as soon as the big delivery arrives. Here are some beautiful moscari flowers we are thinking of using for an upcoming wedding at the Wythe Hotel. The massive, reclaimed wood table from my good old friends at Recycled Brooklyn is my favorite piece of furniture in the studio. I often use scraps from their wood shop to build crates for my flower arrangements.”

“Meeting with event producer Ken Solomon to discuss several upcoming events and product launches. We talk about branding elements, props, vases and flowers for a product launch in Miami, as well an event in Manhattan. Ken’s dog Duke doesn’t seem too excited about the vase options, or maybe he’s looking at something on the computer?”

“Back at the studio where my assistant Christina is making an arrangement with peonies, nigella, sweet pea and ranunculus.”

“Another meeting. Here to discuss concepts and budget for a potential book together with my editor, Eva Nyqvist. She is based in New York and works for Elle Decor, Gourmet magazine, and several other interior design, lifestyle and food magazines in Sweden. Being half-Swedish with my entire family in Stockholm, I am excited about this project to say the least.”

“Considering vase and flower options for the book from a collection of vintage bottles and other vases which I have either found at flea markets like Brimfield, antique stores, or dug up (I recently learned that the term is ‘digger’).”

12. final arrangement
“Our copper/brass experiment worked out fine, the vase is dry and ready for some flowers. I often buy used vases in bulk from other florists, or get leftovers from hotels and venues, and upcycle them this way. Another of our popular flower vessels are the salvaged wood crates I make.”

“Our work is done for today and the arrangements we have been working on are packed in the cooler and ready to go to the event. We can finally take a break and have some wine and food on the roof. These ladies are some of the hardest working in the biz and so extremely talented. I am very grateful to have them around, Brittney Summers (Miss Fancy Plants), Emily Kudva and Christina Read. The 360-degree view isn’t too shabby either; we can see Manhattan, downtown Brooklyn and of course the waterfronts of Red Hook.”

  • James, thanks for your kind comment. I take all of my pictures myself! I have one of the cheaper Nikon SLR cameras with the addition of a 50 mm lens. I prefer cameras over iPhone pictures because I like looking through the viewfinder. I carry my camera almost everywhere and I try to only use natural light which is a struggle sometimes. When I need to be in a picture I use a tripod or ask someone to help me. The picture of me at the market was taken by an old teacher of mine Cal of New York Flower School whom I happened to run into that morning. I was lucky, because he is a photographer turned florist (and he suggested I run in the picture to demonstrate the pace at the market). Interestingly, he was also the person who once pointed out to me the importance of taking good photos of your flowers!
