Living In: Now And Then

Even though I’m well past my elementary school days, the advent of summer’s long, humid days always signals a time of boundless freedom and endless possibility. The calendar squares representing the summer months become less a demarcation of time and more a symbolic call to adventure—they almost necessitate creek walks, firefly catching, secret midnight meetings with friends, and sleepless nights spent cycling down dim, tree-lined streets. The creators of Now And Then, a coming-of-age tale set during the summer of 1970, seem to be fully aware of this seasonal phenomenon. With a star-studded cast including Demi Moore, Rosie O’Donnell, Christina Ricci, and Thora Birch, this film is guilty-pleasure nostalgia-candy at its best: there is mystery, adventure, neighborhood rivalry, suburban angst, and the uncomfortable stirrings of adolescent summertime romance. Not to mention one of the best things about any period piece: killer interiors. As I watched this sugar-sweet summertime romp recently, I found myself experiencing a familiar sense of restlessness that often accompanies warm weather months. The perfect way to get ready for summer, Now And Then will have you planning bike ride excursions, cemetery seances, and girls versus guys battles of red rover. Bring on the heat! —Max

LOVE THIS! I think of my 3 best girlfriends every time I see this movie – such a great nostalgic piece. I love everything you’ve put together here … I’ve often wished I grew up in the 60’s & 70’s. Thanks for the daydream :)

Tim

Sloan’s Antique and Modern Furniture in Buffalo has at least one one of the sunburst clocks for sale. You should write a post on that Cave of Wonders!

I was so completely obsessed with this movie! (Still am.) I love the fashion and the friendship and the awesome cast. Thora Birch was so great! I also love Mexican Coca Cola, so there’s that, too!

Sammy

This just might be my favorite post of yours….ever.
Love Now and Then so much.

My comment is the same as Jessi’s! LOVED this movie as a kid, and the soundtrack! It’s the reason I know all the words to “Sugar Sugar” lol!

I just watched this movie the other night and it sent me searching back through the Living In archives — it seemed so perfect for this column that I was SURE it had to be in here! Great choice and wonderful roundup, Max!

I am sure that watching this movie was one of the first times I fell in love with design. I just loved the groovy colors and stacked pattern. Plus I was about the same age as the young actresses and my mom was about the same age as the characters, so we both related to the idea of a summer spent hanging with friends and growing up.

Nicole

Isn’t it amazing how things can come back and be fashionable again. Just goes to show how much we like to be reminded of the past. I love movies such as Now and then which allows me ti rem inis about my childhood. I had a similar bike when I was young, just a different color.

Malina

Such a sweet movie. I should watch it again, myabe it helps against the rain. The lamp is great!

Robin

I’ve never seen this! Just checked on Netflix and it’s not there, I’m tempted to buy the DVD..

Lisa

Love this, and love this series that y’all do! Ever consider doing one that’s Beatle related, like Hard Day’s Night or Help?

Trisha

This was one of my favourite films as a child. I always identified most with Roberta… not sure if that was a good thing! Thanks for this post, brought back some nice nostalgia!

Julie

When this movie first came out, my 3 girlfriends and I were obsessed with it. Unfortunately we’ve all drifted apart as so many childhood friends do, but I always think of this movie and my own group of Sam, Chrissy, Roberta, and Teeny when summertime rolls around!

Bridget from Refined Vintage

I have never seen this movie, but I grew up in the 70’s so I can definitely relate. I will be checking it out on Netflix, I do love the vintage collection you have gathered especially the clock and the lamp. This is a perfect choice for a summer movie.

Oh! I use to proudly state that Now and Then was my favorite movie until I entered middle school. I don’t know what made me stop (young vulnerability?). But there are times when I crave that movie and still I love it. Brings back such good nostalgic memories. (The other film that makes me feel exactly the same is Mermaids).

Jessica White

I have to agree with Katie, the pudding is hilarious.
