Before & After: Pilar’s Sunshine Chair

It’s been so fun getting back into the swing of Before & Afters after taking a little break. I feel prepared to tackle my own projects now (we’ll be doing makeovers as a team in the office, so stay tuned!), and nothing inspires me like seeing the amazing makeovers you guys are doing. This sunny chair make-under and over comes from Pilar in Catalonia. She loves before and after projects and decided to tackle an old wooden chair she had at home. What I love about this project is that she did a little bit of both — she stripped the wood down to its natural color and added painted details, as well. I think the combination feels fresh and sort of vintage at the same time, a look I always welcome. A big high five to Pilar for a job well done and for sharing this with us! xo, grace

More images of Pilar’s process after the jump . . .

The original chair.

The chair stripped, sanded and cleaned.

Bright pops of yellow paint added for detail.

I really love your “before and after” section. This is one of the biggest reasons I started reading your blog, but this post is lacking in the most important information: the details!

It’s so helpful when people share their techniques for sanding and cleaning, the products they used and what works and what doesn’t. I’m currently gathering information before attempting my very own before & after.

Hi! I’m trying to do a similar project but I am not sure what type of paint to use on chairs. Would you mind sharing what kind of paint you used and if you used a varnish to seal it in? Thanks!

Sofia

I love the sunny yellow, but I think the photos of step 2 are maybe my favorite!

Carlos

Pilar should have painted the whole chair yellow to make for a uniform look. The color combination she does not appeal to me. But what the heck, to each his/her own.

This is so lovely. My favorite part is how she left the natural wood showing at the top. I love a combination of painted and unpainted wood!

I really liked the “before” better, with all its interesting lines!

I am so happy to see a before and after (especially a chair one!)…I was worried that the section wasn’t going to be included anymore and as someone else has said, it is the main reason I started reading the blog so long ago! We can see ‘inspiration’ everywhere online but so much of it seems out of reach – big projects, interior designers stuff, over styled homes etc – so I think it is great to see furniture and room projects done by people just like me and read about the methods. I hope the Before and After section will stay on DS. It is one of the things that inspired me to change jobs and train as an upholsterer.

Another vote for keeping B and A…. it was my portal to the site as well and still my favorite part!

And great chair. :)))

If you’re in love with yellow, like me, this is just perfect! And so easy to do. Thanks for sharing!
