Obsessions: Aimee Munford from Garnett Jewelry

by Amy Azzarito

Aimee Munford has an aptitude for unearthing cool. Before she launched her line, Garnett Jewelry, which is filled with the sorts of no-nonsense pieces you’ll want to layer on every day, she was a buyer at the Richmond-based retailer Need Supply. Now that the designer, who just completed another amazing set of bracelets for the site I co-founded, Of a Kind, is working on her label and taking care of a baby full-time, you’d think it would be awfully hard for her to dig up amazing stuff, but Aimee proved us wrong. Here’s what made the cut. — Erica

Score + Solder Suspended Dome Terrarium, $260
“To have something like this hanging in your house completely changes the room without having to invest in a major piece. My husband is really into plants, so this is something that definitely works in our house — we have plants everywhere.”

Ciao Bella Coconut Sorbet
“There’s no dairy in it, which is nice because it’s so rich but not heavy like ice cream. I don’t feel totally gross after eating a bunch of it.”

Garrett Leight Kinney Sunglasses, $310
“I always have a hard time finding frames that fit my face, because it’s a little bit smaller, so I have been wearing a pair of Karen Walker sunglasses for the past couple of years. It’s time to get a new pair! These Garrett Leight ones are kind of pricey, but I’ve been saving up. This pair in particular completely takes me to California. I met Garrett at the tradeshow Capsule, and he is a really cool guy and is just really down to earth — so I don’t mind spending money with him at all.”

Gather Journal, $20
“I love reading, but it’s hard to find time to actually read a book with a baby. For me, magazines are awesome right now. Gather is about food but not just the preparation. It’s also the inspiration behind the food and the actual dining experience, too.”

Hawaiian Alaea Red Sea Salt, $11
“My husband is a chef at Parkside Cafe in Richmond — he’s gotten really into working with natural salts at his restaurant. This Hawaiian salt has a bunch of different medicinal properties. It has a really nice mellow flavor — it’s not overpowering. You can use it with chocolate and desserts, but it also works in soups and on grilled vegetables.”

Coral & Tusk Arrows Pillow, $84
“Coral & Tusk does a lot of embroidery — on pillows, on pieces of art, on little kid clothes. I came across them when I was designing a nursery for my son, and their pillows make really great housewarming gifts. For me making my own stuff, I’m dealing with customers one-on-one, and I really like that aspect. I feel like with them, it was the same kind of thing.”

Ermie Dolman Sleeve Dress, $350
“Another California designer! I think it’s cool that she takes pictures that she then prints on silk. The patterns are not super out-there, but the fact that she’s making them on her own from start to finish — I love that.”

Samantha Pleet’s Spring 2013 Collection
“I love this print. It’s like beautiful vintage wallpaper. And Samantha Pleet is awesome. Besides the fact that this is a beautiful dress, I like that the person who made it is a cool girl.”

Beatrice Valenzuela Combinados Kids Booties, from $105
“It’s crazy: I always knew babies grew fast, but until I actually had one, I didn’t fully get it. He wears clothes for like two weeks, and then he’s grown out of them. I would love to get a pair for myself, but I think I’ll probably have to pick up these for him — baby’s first shoes!”

Ace & Jig Pleated Mini Dress, $189
“Every single piece Ace & Jig made for fall is something I would wear every day. I pretty much want everything.”

Stitch and Hammer Goods Stitch Wallet, $68
“They are based out of Boulder, Colorado, and they’re another company that really seems to believe in making their stuff by hand and standing behind it. I’ve been looking at their wallets for a while, and I just think I need to treat myself.”

Small Trades Striped Tees and Dresses
“I’m such a sucker for stripes that I’m like, ‘Oh, cool, I can get like five of these, and they’ll all look a little bit different — even though they’re all stripes.’”
