living in: a very long engagement

A Very Long Engagement doesn’t glorify life during World War I, but it does shine a small light of beauty during an otherwise depressing time. Director Jean-Pierre Jeunet is a perennial favorite around these parts, so his sweeping, sweet story of a girl searching for clues about her lost love is an obvious addition to our little Jeunet collection that includes Amelie and Delicatessen. — Amy M.

Edwardian France is gorgeous enough as is, but when put through the Jeunet blender, it comes out as perfectly quirky as one could hope for. Being wooed atop a lighthouse? Sleeping in the attic of a Bretton cottage? Becoming a highly skilled detective, all in the name of love? A long engagement perhaps, but well worth the wait.

looks amazing, I love all your ‘living ins’. Have you seen the BBC period drama series, Downton Abbey? So good! Could be an amazing ‘living in’ on D*S too! :)

Nina

This is gorgeous! I’m so glad “Living in” finally featured this film… it’s my absolute favorite!

Sara

First time ever I think a movie is better than a book. I absolutely love this movie, and both Jean-Pierre Jeunet and Audrey Tautou have been my favorite since Amelie!

Kelly

I have never seen this movie, but that vintage engagement ring is absolutely gorgeous!

This Tiny Existence

I love anything by Jean-Pierre Jeunet! His movies always create such a beautiful world. Great “living in”. Those curtains are especially beautiful! I want!!

Meg

Love the Bentwood bed you found – absolutely perfect! The movie is so beautifully shot and makes for a perfect “Living In.” *sigh* must go and dream about watching movies in French without subtitles and fabulous rooms filled with lace and wingtip shoes…

Oh no, Oh no!!!

My ‘must watch list’ gets even longer!!! Sigh…..so now I add:

-Delicatessen
-A Very Long Engagementl
-Micmacs

….to the ever-growing list. It promises to be a long, dark drizzly winter here in B.C. so thanks for this. *wink*

PS: May I throw in a suggestion for another great period flick that I would ‘love to live in’? “The Enchanted April”, came out in 1991. It won all sorts of awards, is a treat to watch, and is a LOVELY story!

Jean Pierre Jeunet

Ha ha ha…… Funny but cool. Thanks for the comments ! I need it now because it’s always so hard to find the money to make the next…

Danae

Lovely little post! Can I make a request for a future Living In post? Whip It!

Another Amy

I second “Enchanted April”! Lovely film, as is this one. It’s almost like living in a dream.

Is someone fooling around? Or is that the *real* Jean Pierre Jeunet who left a comment.
And if so, can you please hook me up with Dominique Pinon? I’m a die-hard fan. The hubby doesn’t need to know.. lol.

Andrew

Loved the film! Actually, it reminded me of you when I watched it last month, so, a coincidence that you covered it so well here! Great piece.

Thanks
