sfo > pdx

This morning Amy and I are hugging our favorite DIY girl goodbye (We’ll miss you, Kate!) and hopping on a plane up to Portland to finish our summer project and take some classes at the Ace. This week has been a blur of inspiration and new ideas, so I wanted to share a few quick snapshots from the week before I launch into regular content today. I can’t wait to share the project we’ve been working on- I promise you it’s going to be awesome. We’ve had so much fun meeting everyone who’s going to be involved and it’s been and endless string of “I’m so excited about this you guys!” all week. Until then, here’s a little glimpse of inspiring bits from SF. See you in Portland soon…xo, grace

Image above: I can’t stress how spot on all the praise for Outerlands is. Amazing space, incredibly nice people and delicious food. I was sold as soon as I took my first bite of panzanella.

Image above: The seats made of old belts at Gather in Berkeley were such a fun idea (and surprisingly comfy to sit on)

Image above: Beautiful boards and signs at Mollusk Surf Shop in the Sunset

More images after the jump…

Image above: My favorite tree I’ve seen in SF so far. The new growth was SO much lighter in color than the old growth and the red flowers were so beautiful. I stopped and stared at this like an idiot for a few minutes. I envy the person who gets to have this outside their house every day.

Image above: We had a great time meeting the team at Anzer Farms. Their work is so gorgeous and I can’t wait to find a home for my new AF vase.

The tree is a bottlebrush tree. We had one as a kid, in my yard. The flowers, while beautiful, are actually really sticky and if they get in your hair, it’s hard to get them out (or at least that’s how I remember it).

I like the belt-covered seat… great way use belts that are otherwise damaged – missing buckle, a rip in a whole…or just a bunch of belts from someone special in your life…who of course doesn’t use them anymore.

So glad you got to experience my hometown! Go Oakland! (And Berkeley too!)

Okay, now I feel like I have to go to Outerlands before I move for sure. I have a friend who worked there for sometime and she would wax on and on about the food. I’ve got to try it.

It’s not often (okay, probably never) that I read about someone coming out to our city and enjoying some time in the good ‘ol outer sunset. I live two blocks from Outerlands and while I prefer Java Beach down the block, it is a great neighborhood with warm vibe! Thanks for sharing!

It’s a pohutukawa tree – native to New Zealand. Every Christmas they are covered in red flowers and they grow in the sand right on the beach. If you could sum NZ up in one image it would be lying on a beach towel looking up at the summer sky through big old gnarly branches and red flowers!

LOVE the artwork hanging above the board rack in the 3rd photo… anyone able to tell me the artist… would be rad to get some for above our rack in our home, or if not… i am totally diy-ing that!

So cool to see salvaged and repurposed furniture like those seats at Gather! Thanks so much for taking us along your travels – it’s really exciting to see the places you’ve been! When you’re back in NYC you have to go check out ReVision in the East Village. Ask for Johnny B. and tell him I sent you.

Great pics! Oh yeah, I’m gonna need to know more about those shoes.

Maybe I am the only one who read the title as “sfo is greater than pdx” rather than “sfo to pdx”… I think that’s a bit of PDX hometown pride making me paranoid.

Have fun in Portland!

The Outerlands is amazing! I am always impressed by the menu (that changes daily) and their great sense of place and design.

Kate

I love the bottle brush tree, and I have one in my yard! It attracts hummingbirds too, which just adds to the beauty. Glad you had a great visit in the Bay Area!

As a San Francisco girl FROM Portland, Oregon, it’s awesome to see your reviews thus far. If you feel brave, check out VooDoo donuts in Portland, and there is the Lotus Flower restaurant that is awesome, too! ENJOY!

Katie

I read the title the way Erin did, and I’m so relieved that I got it all wrong. (I’m a Portlander.). Glad you enjoyed your time here!

Mary

Love Outerlands … I live just a few blocks from there. Did you get a coffee from Trouble while you were there?
