living in: o brother, where art thou?

Loosely based on Homer’s Odyssey, O Brother, Where Art Thou? is the Coen brothers’ sepia-toned adventure through Depression-era Mississippi. The film oozes Southern charm of the Dust Bowl variety — suspenders and rocking chairs; front porches and mint juleps; escaped convicts and well-pomaded hair. Bluegrass sets the whole story on its feet, and wow, I was born in the wrong time.

What this all basically boils down to is my desire to live in an old-timey general store and never come out. Candy by the pound; sweet little Peter Pan-collared dresses; an unlimited supply of canning jars in every size; cherry pie; and hopefully a few handsome, overalled 1930s gentleman to swing me around to The Stanley Brothers. If one of those men is George Clooney, all the better.

Love it!!! You’re really on a role with the Living In series.
Thanks for including the Dapper Dan, great touch

L

I just watched this two days ago and wondered if you’d done a ‘living in’ for it!

May I suggest Benny & Joon for a future board?

Carrie Rosalind

I love this movie but I haven’t seen it forever! Seeing these pictures makes me want to go out and rent it right now!

Maggie

Amazing.
Just gushed about it on my Twitter.
Thank you, thank you, thank you, and definitely keep it up!

(I second Benny and Joon!)

Newly Domesticated

I live for these, and this one is one of my faves. I grew up in coal mining, bluegrass country and I was trying to convince my friend to have an “O Brother Where Art Thou” wedding with muted colors and a bluegrass band…maybe this will sell her on the idea!

Adelinaa

I love that movie! I’ve seen it like 1000 times :) and the soundtrack is beautiful!

lisa lou

Yay! I was an O Brother Where Art Thou siren for Halloween last year. Quite a hit among the bluegrass types at the bar.

Heather

Awesome! Awesome! I hope you were listening to the soundtrack while creating it!

kathy

okay, so where can i pick up a george clooney for my sister? :)

don’t know that i’ve ever commented before in all the years i’ve enjoyed this blog, but i should -i love your blog and all the cool things you highlight (the sneak peeks are my favorite, but i also especially love the befores/afters because i am a fan of “second acts” in furniture and in life. and this “living in” is a cool series; would love to see “bagdad cafe” and “hope floats” done here). anyway, thanks for sharing things i can’t get to on my old can’t-handle-the-internet computer or because i work too much.

now back to “where’s george?”!

liz

OMG! The best “LIVING IN” ever!!! my dream style in its entirety – housewares, dress, music, everything! thanks!!!

Chandi

Love this! I was totally born in the wrong era too.

Amy

I love this one, this era, the music I’m hearing in my head right now!

Michel

George Clooney was hilarious in this movie. It’s time for me to watch it again. The soundtrack is a classic. I knew I had to own it the first time I heard it. Thanks for featuring it.

Liz

I agree with L, please do a “living in” Benny & Joon! I also loved your Oxford city guide from a few days back. Thanks! :)

Nicodemus Green

Gosh dangit.

I was really hoping for a link to some honest to goodness hair jelly.

marissa @ the boot

this is SO great! i love that movie, could watch it over and over again and still be wooed by its (and clooney’s) charm! p.s. can you believe he’s turning 50?!

amymezzell

You can get those overalls for about $30 at about any store, including Wal-Mart. Liberty overalls have looked exactly the same from the beginning, apparently, but you can definitely get those exact ones starting at $28 with a Google search. About every old man in the south has those!

e

aaaand now I know that I can have live cane toads delivered to my door…

andria lisle

Love this!

I met the Coen Brothers when they came into my former workspace – Memphis’ Shangri-la Records – while they were location scouting before filming began. Super-sweet guys with GREAT taste in music!

rowena

I love 30s style. 40s style too. Will you do a board featuring 40s style? This is delightful

MissHeliotrope

You want a cane toad? Come to Australia – you can have as many as you want for free…

Shannon

Amy, this is my favorite feature. I never miss one. :) Love your round-ups. Also, would you consider a post on Almost Famous? Or another 70s-set music movie? I’d love to see what you come up with.

FIDM Fashion Club

I have never seen this movie but I love it that you pulled vintage pieces from the movie that are classic and can still be used today. Great job!

Amy M.

Man, I wish there was a Walmart nearby, I’d love a pair of 1940s indigo dyed overalls for $28. Pick me up a pair, will ya ;)

Michelle M.

I love, love this movie! The music, the clothing, the vintage goodies. It’s enough to make a girl swoon!

taylor

Hello! Love the site and the post, I just wanted to make a gentle suggestion that you should no longer use the site you linked for the cane toad. After browsing it, it is clear they have endangered frogs for sale, and that the business they do with dealers in catching animals is shady at best. Sorry to be a debbie downer, just a concerned fan of the blog :)

Claire M.

I love this movie too. The clothes that they are wearing are fantastic. I want to wear classic dresses like them

Trish B

The soundtrack for this movie is gorgeous and one of my all time faves

Maya

This is one of my all-time faves! Especially the soundtrack.

I would love to see a Harold and Maude living in!

ruth

Love that clock:) Just fyi though, the price listed above is different from the price on their website.

Recently, we had a tornado warning in the middle of the night and our neighbor, who looks like Delmar, went running from house to house calling out, “Seeek Shelter” ( long and drawn out) “There is a tornado warning in Shenandoah County”. I smiled the whole next day because it reminded me of Delmar saying, in OBWAT, “Do NOT Seek The Treasure”…

I love this movie! I’m smiling now too!
Thanks,
Susie

Ann

I love this film and soundtrack. It’s one of my singalong favourites. And, sometimes I dance, too, but don’t tell anyone!

Shirley

“We though you was a TOAD!!” LOVE that movie! :) Thanks for the great finds!

rktrix

“It’s a veritable age of reason, just like they had in France!” LOL! As good as the dialog in the movie, and the music, is the photography. If you get a hold of the DVD, check out the special feature on how they tinted the film to get the dusty feeling in every frame. Beautiful. Adore that movie.

Jovana

This is great! There was a guy in line behind me at the grocery store today. What immediately came into my mind was that he obviously was a Dapper Dan man!

julia wheeler

SO GOOD!! you do such an excellent job picking these movies… love it! i agree with L… love Benny & Joon! do you really need an excuse to go digging through pics of johnny depp? :)

Libby's Library

Them syreens did this to Pete. They loved him up and turned him into a horny toad.

Hold on, I don’t want this pomade. I want Dapper Dan.

Shake a leg Junior! Thank God your mammy died givin’ birth. If she’d have seen you, she’d have died o’ shame.

Thank you boys for throwin’ in that fricassee. I’m a man of large appetite, and even with lunch under my belt, I was feelin’ a mite peckish.

LOL – we have most of the movie memorized:-)

Marshmallow

I love this film and especially the soundtrack and how funny, i just finished writing a blog post called ‘soggy bottom boys apartment’! inspired by the soundtrack and my woes with H2O ;p
Love ‘Living In’, keep up the good work x Mallow

carole gropl

OMG! I had almost forgotten about this movie!! Have to rent it again! Thanks for the reminder of an amazing film!! Love your posts Amy!

kris

LOVE the ‘Living In’ series! If you haven’t already done one that I’ve missed, I think ‘Big Fish’ would make for a fun entry!

Amy

Might I suggest Living in: My cousin Vinny. Some of the outfits Marisa Tomei wears are awesomely hipster, not to mention Joe Pesci’s old timey suit. Sorry I just saw this movie again recently and thought of this segment.

Jen @ The Golden Dory

GREAT choice for a Living In! I love this movie, and I’ve been meaning to watch it again recently. Now I really want to!
And great choice for the guitar – Seagull Guitars are so nice, and made in Canada!

Karen Longo

Thanks for this, Amy! This is one of those movies that I have to stop and watch every time it’s on. The soundtrack gets a lot of play at my house. I love that it started a resurrection of sorts of the 30′s folky, gospely music. The 30′s is my favorite era of clothing style in the last century. Bona fide!

Ignite

LOVE the ‘Living In’ series! How about doing one on “James Bond” some of the suits, shoes an hats in this would make for a fun stylish entry!
