Party games have always been a favorite of mine. Especially as an only child, going to birthday parties and getting to play with groups of other kids always seemed like the best present of all. As much as a piƱata was probably my favorite party surprise to find, I also got an inordinate amount of fun out of “Pin the Tail on the Donkey”. For some reason I thought it was hilarious to watch all the kids stumble around with a blindfold while trying to stick a piece of paper on another silly piece of paper. Maybe it was because it felt like a great equalizer, but I loved that everyone, no matter how cool or popular they were, had to feel silly and laugh when they walked in circles and tried to stay balanced while holding a paper donkey tail. Either way, reminders of this game always make me smile. So when I saw this gorgeous mid-century lithograph by John Alcorn over at Justina’s blog* I immediately wanted to buy it. John’s version of this game is a bit more whimsical/60s with its winged horse and feather tails but it’s gorgeous just the same. This limited edition is available at 1stdibs right now but I’d love to see contemporary designers take on fun party game themes like this. I bet Sanna Annuka‘s spin on this would be amazing….xo, grace

Very gorgeous.
The eyes on the mask is my favorite part!
Thanks for introducing me to this artist. Love the style! (Must say it looks like a screenprint, not a litho even if that’s how they’ve got it listed at 1stdibs. I suppose one can litho anything if sufficiently stubborn ;).
