photo lettering from house industries

Grace is flying home today after a quick trip to Alabama. She’ll be back tomorrow. Since I’m holding down the home fort, I thought I’d share this site that I’ve been obsessing about. I could lose myself for hours in this one. House Industries has just launched photo lettering, which basically allows you to purchase headlines from their online interface. The company’s roots are in New York City advertising from 1936 to 1997, in the days before faxes, scanners and email. (They have a cute history section on their site. Seriously, I’m going to call any photo of dudes at machinist stations cute.) I love their ideas for photo lettering usage —  from huge letters on wood and totes to T-shirts and tape. Did someone say tape? Seriously, it was the tape that sold me. So fun. — Amy A.

Reading their history makes me miss my agency days! I happen to be looking for something like this for my new marketing collateral, so thank you for sharing this :)

these are cute, but can you explain why i would buy these instead of downloading fonts for free?

Sarah

I was (and am) so excited about the type on this site. But it’s already terribly hard to get clients to pay for type. Do they think it’s free? This subscription thing would have to come out of my own pocket. And I already spend far, far too much of my own money on type. Too bad, because I really have a crush on Buffalo.

I would love a print of the S on mustard that I see in the picture–does anyone know which font that is?

I can’t seem to figure that out–or how to order something that resembles that.

Thanks, Amy & anyone else that has any insight.

@Tracey:
If you read the history section on photo-lettering (its linked in the post), you should get a better understanding of why it costs money. These letters were created by hand. Over 200 hours just to do one alphabet. That kind of attention to detail is worth something.
I love House Industries and I’m really glad they are being introduced to people who might not have ever discovered them on their own. Thanks d*s!

I 100% agree with Jacqueline. I do just wish we could buy specific typefaces. I’m not sure how easy it would be to get budget approval or invoice when I’m using a subscription. Anyway, really, Buffalo is awesome.

OOOH! Love anything regarding typography – thank you for sharing this awesome site.

@jacqueline, i get it now. thanks. it would be nice though if they had an option to buy a whole set of font.

This stuff is great. I work for a web design company that’s starting to offer print services and I’d love to have stuff like this around our office.
