living in: singin’ in the rain

Spring has fully sprung in New York, which means we’re up to our eyeballs in cold, miserable rain. Precipitation normally leaves me in a perpetual state of drowned rat, so to class up my rainy-day routine, I’m turning to the 1952 classic musical Singin’ in the Rain. If Gene Kelly doesn’t make you want to dance in the street, then nothing will.

A little bit glitzy, a little bit dapper, Singin’ in the Rain is without a doubt one of America’s most-beloved musicals. It is, of course, a musical about a musical, so you must have a high tolerance for tap shoes to appreciate its full glory. Luckily we do, because it’s not even April and we have months of rain on the way.

1. Sergeant Mirror, $600; 2. Lulu Guinness Swarovski Crystal Bag, $1,060; 3. Spotlight Floor Lamp, $898; 4. Newgate Clock, $160; 5. Antique Hand Mirror, $55; 6. Perfume Bottles, $25/each; 7. Antique Theater Seats, $2,495, 8. Brass Cane, $25, 9. Silk Pocket Square, $32

Actually, the umbrella in the movie’s iconic scene is not a solid-handled chestnut, but a whangee.

I love this!? Singing in the Rain is my favorite film ever! I was so thrilled to see design inspirations for the home. Love this!

You know, I don’t usually like musicals so I fully expected to dislike Singin’ in the Rain – but I LOVED it. And the colours are so beautiful – the whole film feels so fresh and spring like. I love the ‘living in’ series – its introduced me to some new films as well as doing the style of some old favourites of mine!

I used to have such a crush on Gene Kelly! My favorite of his movies is “An American In Paris” not only for the music (huge Gershwin fan) but also for the sets. Would love to see a “living in:” on THAT film : )

Lauren

Favorite childhood movie! I think Gene Kelly is the most masculine, attractive man in tap shoes. My husband and guy friends admit that he’s pretty cool. We need more classy men like that these days!

susy

Ahhh. Gene. My mom and I have a theory that one of the things that makes his dancing so magical is that he never looks down at his feet.

calli

I love Gene Kelly… this film is what gave me the incentive to… go outside with my younger sister during a downpour and jump around in all the puddles… if you never “sang in the rain,” it highly reccommend it.

Ha, I wish you would have found some “faux hallway” wallpaper to do up-the-wall salto’s on :)

Kristi

Who doesn’t love singing in the rain?!! It’s ever so funny and witty. So many great musical numbers, how can you choose a favorite? …but I do love Moses Supposes- you can’t top Kelly and O’Conner in my opinion!

Aurelie

WHAOUH
“Moses suposes his toeses are roses” was the only English sentence I knew as a French little girl. No sense for my friends and parents :) Love this, thanks

Awesome post! I found that the “CLICK HERE” link led to a “page does not exist” , but the “read more” worked.

Heather

Oh, I love it! I love it! I wanted to LIVE in Singing in the Rain! Their living spaces seemed so glamourous!

Jenny C

I love the “Living In” posts and this is a great one!

I think I’d most love living in Singing in the Rain if I could, indeed, sing, and not only in the rain, at will! This is one of my favorite movies. It’s perfect for a living in.

Aw, I’m so glad you did Singing in the Rain! What a gorgeously shot – and super-fun – movie to live in. (I particularly love that still you selected of Gene Kelly and Debbie Reynolds walking into the big, darkened movie studio – wow!)

Brad

Hollywood never gave the world anything cooler than Gene, without a doubt.

Takes me back to summers as a kid, having “movie night” at our house with my grandparents… and a big tray of homemade crunchy tacos.

Genki

This is so funny – I actually watched ‘The Bandwagon’ yesterday and thought to myself: ” I wish Design*Sponge would do a Living In on this. And Singing in the Rain is even better!

andrea

Yay!! So glad to finally see it, and great round-up, Amy!

It’s like you are in my brain! I literally sat down to watch this last night and thought that I would be fun to do a Singin in the Rain inspired room…. no really, get out of my head.

Nicole

this is awesome! one of my favorite movies! and the Glee re run tonight is the one where they sing Make Em Laugh and Singin’ In the Rain :)

Polyvorina

How amazing is the artwork in the second to last shot of the movie?! The lips with the i-o-u vowels on the wall? Wonder if that’s available for sale somewhere…

Also, I love raincoats, especially yellow ones. The perfect antidote to rainy days.

Great post! Such a perfectly à propos “living-in.”

Alicia

I’m a day late, but thank you. Now I have a soundtrack to listen to at work that makes up for this crazy New York weather!

btw, I have to have those blue bow heels!

ebabydecor

I fell in love with Gene Kelly when I first saw the movie. Years later I found out my new husband reminded people of G.K. Well, yeah, he did me too a little bit. Then I discovered his ex wife loved G.K.
Question: Did we both fall in love with the man because he reminded us of Gene Kelly? Hmmm.

Julie

I love these posts. But I’m DYING for you to cover Lemony Snicket. Please please please!!!!

Ali

This is my favorite movie of all time. Totally made my day to see this post :)
Gene Kelly <3

Katie Cappello

One of my favorites too…the costumes in this movie are amazing. I especially love Cyd Charisse’s green flapper dress. So sad that the bow pumps are out of stock in my size.

Sue

I love the grey heels, beautiful. I love Gene Kelly too and have been in love with him all my life.

Madeleine

Haha, love this! just flipped through channels like I’m working and Glee is using ‘singing in the rain’ for their song choice, a mix of the song with ‘umbrella’. so good! this post was great :)

R.Shelly

I love those pumps as well! I checked out the site, but unfortunately the only size left is a 6…and I am a 10. The funny part is that I live in Oregon and thought that I couldn’t wear them in the rain because of the suede. I wouldn’t be “Singing in the rain” with them even if I could have purchased them :)

Karen Longo

This is the ultimate musical; the musical you tell people to see when they say they don’t like musicals. My daugters and I vow to learn the whole “All I Do the Whole Night Through…” dance. But no mention of my favorite character, Lina Lamont? Jean Hagan totally rocked in this role. “I ceeannnt steaannem”

Han

I love Singin’ In The Rain – I actually got to watch it at uni as part of my course – I think I watched it like 4 times in about 3 weeks lol
