I can’t claim that I’m a native to Kansas City, although I do affectionately call it my adopted hometown. I moved here from San Diego, CA with my husband so that he could attend his grad school of choice, and I must admit that I wasn’t too excited to give up my beloved beach for what I thought was a sleepy cowtown. Kansas City has done nothing but continue to blow my initial expectations out of the water, and we have SO enjoyed starting our life together in a city that has so much to offer.
“The City of Fountains” is home to a thriving art and design scene, and it attracts a diverse array of independent businesses and restaurants alike. We never run out of new spots to try, and are constantly on a quest to find great locally owned businesses.
We live in the charming Southmoreland neighborhood of midtown, and are within close walking distance to Westport, The Country Club Plaza, The Nelson Atkins Museum and The Kemper Museum of Contemporary Art. Every neighborhood has is high points, but in my opinion, this is the best
spot in town. The following is a list of some of our favorites, but know that there are new places popping up each week, and we are constantly adding to our list of regular spots.
Brookside/Waldo…
- Julian: Delicious dishes are whipped up from local ingredients and served with love, either in the charming dining room or on the lovely neighborhood patio. Sunday night
Family Dinners are a major favorite, and the award-winning chef tweets the
daily specials to keep all of their followers well-informed. 6227 Brookside Blvd, KCMO 64113.
- The Roasterie: This local coffee roasting company now has two coffee shops, but their flagship cafe in Brookside is our favorite. They also sell their roasts at many spots around town, and you can even visit their website to create your own custom roast! 6223 Brookside Blvd, KCMO 64113.
- 75th Street Brewery: One of KC’s great local breweries with what is perhaps the meanest coffee stout around. Great food and the perfect spot to catch a big game with a friendly crowd of locals. 520 West 75th St, KCMO 64114.
- Blue Grotto: They specialize in artisan, handstretched pizzas, but their antipasto platters
are a must, to start. 6324 Brookside Plaza, KCMO 64113.
- Coffee Girls: This spot’s sandwiches are named after galpals and their blended fresh juices are the perfect boost to get you through your day. 7440 Washington, KCMO 64114.
- Frankly Basic: I’m a sucker for a shop with a dog, and the pup at Frankly Basic is too cute for words. Doesn’t hurt that the pieces they carry are classic and sweet. It’s also part of a fabulous cluster of stores called the Crestwood Shops that are all worth checking out. 327 East 55th Street, KCMO 64113.
Country Club Plaza (and surrounding area)…
- Latte Land: With a handful of locations, this local chain is in several different areas of
town, but my favorites are the two on the Country Club Plaza, mainly for their friendly faces and great people watching. 4771 Jefferson St, KCMO 64112.
- Standard Style: Carrying some of the most on-trend pieces in the city, you can be sure that Standard is always working to bring new designer names to our little corner of the Midwest. 451 West 47th St, KCMO 64112.
- Hemline: Located on the Country Club Plaza, this shop is always filled with cute cocktail dresses and casual wear alike. 610 West 48th St, KCMO 64112.
- Tomboy: also on the Plaza, they feature clothing that is designed and made right at the boutique. You can shop right off of their racks, or commission custom orders. 608 1/2 West 48th St, KCMO 64112.
- Hall’s: a local high-end department store created by Hallmark founder Joyce C. Hall in 1913, Halls today is one of the only places in Kansas City proper to find designer labels and counter cosmetics. Besides their distinctive selection, they are also known for their fabulous trunk shows and personal attention. There are two locations, but you can find the one on the Plaza at 211 Nichols Road, KCMO 64112.
- Spin! Pizza: A neopolitan pizza place with a funky cycling theme. Amazing wine list, even more amazing menu, and a gelato selection that can’t be found anywhere else in the city. With several locations throughout the metro area, our favorite Spin! is just south of The Plaza at 4950 Main Street, KCMO 64112.
-Glace: The deliciousy icy brainchild of the local chocolate-genius, Christopher Elbow, Glace offers refreshingly unique flavors like goat cheese with honey, salted pretzel and blueberry cream cheese (in addition to some classic favorites). I recommend adding espresso to the venezuelan spice chocolate for the best affogato you’ve ever had. 4960 Main Street, KCMO 64112.
- Blanc Burgers and Bottles: This popular burger joint has relocated from Westport and is now a Plaza anchor. Even though they more than doubled their seating space, the
dining room is always packed. Amazing burger menu and over a hundred bottled beers. My personal fave is the portobello mushroom burger stuffed with israeli couscous and feta. 4710 Jefferson St, KCMO 64112.
- The Studio: A crochet, knitting and crewel supply store with rooms and rooms of yarn! The ladies who work here are beyond helpful, and are always happy to answer questions
or give advice on projects. 1121 West 47th St, KCMO 64112.
- State Line Arts & Antiques District: Two square blocks of elegant antiques and gift shops, situated just west of the Country Club Plaza and just south of Westport.
- Broadway Coffee: located in the heart of Westport, this is a great meeting spot with lots of tables and delicious snacks. 4106 Broadway, KCMO 64111.
- Bon Bon Atelier: this charming shop is run by a darling set of sisters who have a whimsical taste and a love for all things crafty. They have a great selection of craft and design books, patterns, designer fabrics and sewing notions. It is my go-to spot for gifts for my girlfriends or clients. 314 Westport Road, KCMO 64111.
- Murrays: They make their very own ice cream in-house each week, and I have honestly never tasted anything better. The Creamy Lemon and One Drunk Monk (coffee + frangelico = amazing) are my favorites. 4120 Pennsylvania Ave, KCMO 64111.
- Tea Drops: We love walking to this specialty shop and cafe for bubble tea in the summer and hot chai in the winter. They have a large, well-lit seating area with lots of tables which makes it perfect for meetings, or camping out and getting some work done. 4111 Pennsylvania, KCMO 64111.
- McCoy’s Public House: McCoy’s is the epitome of the term “neighborhood hangout”… they have a great list of beers that they brew right there at the restaurant, and every single thing on the menu is delish. 4057 Pennsylvania, KCMO 64111.
- Beer Kitchen: McCoy’s younger, hipper brother is just across the street. Their “make your own” mac and cheese is amazing… add ingredients such as spinach, shitake mushrooms and truffle butter. My personal favorite is the Vegetarian Shepard’s Pie, but everyone I know who has been there gives the whole menu rave reviews. 435 Westport Road, KCMO 64111.
- Harry’s Bar & Tables: Another great Westport bar (there are too many to name!), I love the fact that anyone can go there and order “The Usual” and the server will zip right back with a delicious drink! (It’s a blueberry vodka + lemonade cocktail, in case you were wondering.) Their patio has two tiers, and is a favorite for people watching and eating their homemade desserts. 501 Westport Road, KCMO 64111.
- Bluestem: With a plush lounge on one side and a bright dining room on the other,
Bluestem is good for both fancy cocktails with friends or a romantic dinner with someone special. They serve “progressive American cuisine”, and I have never been disappointed. 900 Westport Road, KCMO 64111.
- D’Bronx: If you’re looking for authentic pizza, calzones and deli subs – this is the place. Eat in at one of their booths and write on the walls or pick it up to enjoy at home.
3904 Bell St, KCMO 64111.
- Blue Koi: This little noodles-and-dumpling shop has an impressive list of vegetarian dishes and some of the best bubble teas in KC. 1803 West 39th Street, KCMO 64111.
- Urban Mining Homewares: Set up like an antique mall, with individuals stocking their own separate booths, this space is a well-edited collection of vintage and antique items, and I can’t EVER walk out of there without buying something. 3924 Walnut Street, KCMO 64111.
- Donna’s Dress Shop: Donna is a vintage expert who stocks a wide array of high quality vintage items and a handful of vintage-inspired new pieces as well. Find them all for extremely affordable prices at her bright and airy dance-studio-turned-dress-shop! 1410 West 39th St, KCMO 64111.
- Mash Handmade: Adorable handmade goods for your home that are brought to you by a mother/daughter dynamic duo! 3900-A Pennsylvania Ave, KCMO 64111.
- Boomerang: Vintage furniture and clothing that is arranged by decades! Great prices and special pieces that are available for rent, as well. 3900 Pennsylvania Ave, KCMO 64111.
- Westport Flea Market Bar & Grill: A true hamburger dive, with the freshest beef from
another local spot, McGonigle’s. The have specials every night of the week, and the experience would not be complete without the arcade games, billiards and local live music. 817 Westport Road, KCMO 64111.
- Pot Pie: Their menu is written on the wall in chalk because it changes often, and some of my faves are the delicious spinach and brie tart and of course, their chicken pot pie. 904 Westport Road, KCMO 64111.
Crossroads Art District/Downtown…
- Filling Station: located in the nearby Union Hill neighborhood, the folks at the Filling
Station serve delicious quiche, pastries, and Oddly Correct coffee that is locally roasted to perfection. If the weather is nice, be sure to sit outside on one of the best patios in town. 2980 McGee Trafficway, KCMO 64108.
- Hammerpress: This letterpress shop has been featured on Design*Sponge before, but they are constantly updating their shop and are always on the cutting edge of design and
printing. Last year, Hammerpress took their innovative space one step further and added a special salon and retail feature right into the middle of their studio (see next). 110 Southwest
Blvd, KCMO 64108.
- I Love You Shop: Located in the middle of Hammerpress, this two-chair hair studio also offers a small retail selection of apothecary items and foodstuffs that can’t be found anywhere else in Kansas City – a somewhat strange, yet lovely twist on the traditional General Store.
- Succotash: You’ll know it when you drive up by the giant, hot pink chandelier hanging just outside the door… in my opinion, this is the most delicious breakfast spot in the
city. Funky decor, friendly servers and an amazing chef who is happy to pop out of the kitchen to sip coffee with the regulars. 2601 Holmes, KCMO 64108.
- You Say Tomato: Just a few blocks down from Succotash, You Say Tomato is another little cafe that will blow your socks off. They serve fresh and seasonal menu items, and also
have a great little market section where you can buy organic and locally grown produce and other products. 2801 Holmes St, KCMO 64108.
- The Cashew: A three story bar and restaurant with amazing sangria and garage-style windows that are open in nice weather… they also have a great event space upstairs and
offer catering for parties and such. 2000 Grand Boulevard, KCMO 64108.
- Christopher Elbow: This local chocolatier has expanded his “sweet” business by opening up a second store in San Francisco, and last summer he grew again to add the local artisan ice cream shop, Glace, to his offerings. 1819 McGee St, KCMO
64108.
- Pizzabella: Besides pizza, this cozy little spot is known for their delicious roasted brussels
sprouts. The modern decor and close proximity to many art galleries make it the perfect spot for a night of gallery-hopping on First Fridays in the Crossroads. 1810 Baltimore, KCMO 64108.
- The Rieger: In a beautiful historic building that was once a hotel, The Rieger, describes itself as “A Kansas City Classic brought forward in time.” The original tile floor and fixtures give it an old-world charm and they claim that their food celebrates the bounty of our region… having just tried it for the first time, I can say that it truly does just that. 1924 Main Street, KCMO 64108.
- Manifesto: This modern speakeasy is a secret to some, but a regular stop for others. It’s a bit tricky to get in (it’s tucked away in the basement of The Rieger), but once you do, you won’t want to leave. It’s a cozy spot that serves unique prohibition-era cocktails, and in order to get your name on the list, you’ll have to text the owner.
- Skyline Salon: On the fourth floor of the old Abdiana “high-rise”, this salon has floor-to-ceiling windows that face the heart of downtown. The stylists stations are made from reclaimed wood (by The Utilitarian Workshop) and they also carry a handful of styling
products and locally made clothing and accessories in their in-salon boutique. 2001 Grand Blvd, KCMO 64108.
- Speak Salon: It’s got walls decorated with “speech bubbles” and has several skylights and windows, which means that these ladies have lots of inspiration to draw from. Old hardwood floors add lots of character to this otherwise modern space with fantastic stylists. 327 1/2 Southwest Blvd, KCMO 64108.
- Nick Carter & Co.: Quirky collectibles for your home, handpicked by Mr. Carter, himself.
They always have fun new curiosities to look through, and anytime I stop in, I have to use every ounce of self control to not leave with new art for our home. 3410 Main St, KCMO 64111.
- Retro Inferno: Heaven for mid-century modern collectors. There is quite a large following of the MCM style in KC, and this is one of the best places to find special treasures for your home. 1500 Grand Boulevard, KCMO 64108.
- Boulevard Brewery: The largest specialty brewer in the midwest, this local staple is a surefire favorite of nearly every Kansas Citian I know. They offer free tours of their charming facility, but be sure to make a reservation because they fill up fast. 2501 Southwest Blvd, KCMO 64108.
- La Bodega: By far, the best place in town for delicious and unique tapas dishes and the choice of either red or white sangria. A super spot for happy
- YJ’s Snack Shop: A funky little snack shop in the heart of the crossroads district, they are always hopping on First Fridays, but during the rest of month, it’s a great place to sit
and relax. 128 West 18th St, KCMO 64108.
- Spool: This tiny, yet action packed shop specializes in “non-cookie-cutter looks for
the current ladies” and carries various local designers such as Decoy Lab and Early Jewelry. 122 West 18th St, KCMO 64108.
- Birdies: carrying the loveliest intimate apparel and swimwear around, this is the best spot to shop for brides-to-be, friends, or sweetie-pies. One of the owners is also the brains behind the annual West 18th Street Fashion Show which is a local fashion event not to be missed. 116 West 18th St, KCMO 64108.
- Lulu’s Thai Noodle Shop: Another local favorite – this kicky thai cafe has recently had to move to a larger space because of it’s huge fan following. Lunch portions and hearty dinner combos are great for both grazers and rubber-guts alike. My recommendation is to get the drunken noodles and you’ll have just the right amount leftover for a midnight snack. 2030 Central, KCMO 64108.
The Westside…
- The Westside Local: a menu full of locally grown food (some of the produce comes straight from the ground outside of the restaurant) and a beer garden that is perfect for sitting outside and sipping brew on a nice day. The parmesan garlic fries are to die for, and the “localities” are perfect for munching. 1663 Summit St, KCMO 64108.
- Bluebird Bistro: Organic. All-natural. Sustainable. Local. They’ve got it down to a science, but the space is so warm and friendly that you’ll feel like you’re dining in someone’s home. 1700 Summit St, KCMO 64108.
- Fresher Than Fresh Snowcones: Admittedly, FTF isn’t permanently on the Westside,
but who doesn’t love food that travels? This frosty delight on wheels zips around the city in a vintage camper and makes stops at several summertime events. Saturdays though, they are stationed in the garden on the Northwest corner of 17th and Summit.
- Fervere: The handcrafted bread baked in Fervere’s brick oven rivals any other I’ve ever had. The olive rosemary bread is bay far, my fave, but you’ll have to act fast because they are only open Thursday through Friday and they close each day after they have sold out of their delicious loaves. 1702 Summit St, KCMO 64108.
- Fud: A fairly new addition to the KC restaurant scene, Fud specializes in vegan, vegetarian and raw dishes. They offer creative cooking classes, as well, but whether you go to learn or just to dine, you’ll need to bring some bills because it’s cash only. 813 West 17th Street, KCMO 64108.
- Lill’s on 17th: This casual, yet initmate dining experience, is a favorite for local dog-lovers… the owners welcome patrons to bring their pup, so that both can enjoy tasty treats and exceptional customer service. Reservations are recommended, and be sure to check the website for their seasonal hours. 815 West 17th Street, 64108.
- R Bar: Stepping into this restaurant is like going back in time…a rustic saloon-style bar with live music, and the best cocktails in the city (be sure to try the Saint Marguerite). They serve delicious seasonal food that is artfully prepared, and at dinner they bring savory funnel cake with spicy dipping sauce to munch on while you wait for your food. 1617 Gennesee, KCMO 64102.
- Good Juju: A healthy mix of vintage, antique, and mid-century items including furniture,
clothing, art, unique home decor, fresh flowers, architectural findings and ”assorted nonsense.” 1412 West 12th Street, KCMO 64101.
- Foundation: A full service architectural resource center specializing in the reuse of architectural antiques and salvaged building materials from classical to modern. This is
treasure hunting where most of the hunt has been done for you. 1221 Union
Ave, KCMO 64101.
- Re-Runs Warehouse: one of the largest vintage collections in the US, Re-Runs has
outfitted major motion pictures and provided style to the stars. They are open to the public on Saturdays, and because the selection is so large, it can take a lot of digging to find something but it is definitely well worth it. 1408 West 12th St, KCMO 64111.
- Jerry’s Woodsweather Cafe: A truly greasy spoon, Jerry’s was voted having the best Reuben in town and their biscuits and gravy are said to be divine. 1414 West 9th St, KCMO 64101.
- Urban Dwellings Design: By far, one of the most well-curated retail spaces in town, the sisters who own this shop have made it feel like you are stepping into a friends home when you arrive. They also offer custom interior design services, write for the local newspaper and keep an informative and inspiring blog. 412 Delaware St, KCMO 64105.
- The Farmhouse: this charming restaurant is located in the middle of the urban River Market, but it has a very cozy country feel. Their fresh from the farm menu and wide
variety of comfort food does not disappoint. 300 Delaware St, KCMO 64106.
- Harry’s Country Club: Harry’s website describes it as “a hip but reverent take on the 1940s honky tonk movement,” and the vibe of this bar/restaurant feels just as cool as it sounds. 112 East Missouri Ave, KCMO 64106.
- Le Fou Frog: A quaint little bistro with authentic French food and a fabulous outdoor dining space. This spot is a local favorite and the menu is peppered with unique dishes such as kangaroo and ostrich. 400 East 5th St, KCMO 64106.
- Babycakes: With real buttercream icing and mouthwatering seasonal flavors, the folks at
Babycakes are always happy to serve your cupcakes with a big smile and a glass of localShatto milk. 108 East Missouri Ave, KCMO 64106.
- City Market Farmer’s Market: more than 30 full-time merchants are open year-round and offer specialty foods, fresh meats and seafood. The square where the market is held is also surrounded by restaurants and cafes, floral and home accessories stores, and much
more. 5th & Walnut, KCMO 64108.
- River Market Antiques: This 30,000 s.f. indoor antique mall houses over 100 vendors and is open 7 days a week. You could spend days exploring all of the nooks and crannies of this several story building, and there would still be plenty to see. 115 West 5th St,
KCMO 64108.
- Happy Gillis: technically in Columbus Park, this cafe & hangout has a relaxed atmosphere and some of the most amazing lunch/brunch options around. With soups like Szechuan carrot and Maple-Pumpkin with chile de arbol and sandwiches like the chorizo + carmelized onion frittata melt, you practically HAVE to order a few and share with friends. 549 Gillis Street, KCMO 64106.
Other Areas…
- Habitat Shoes: by far, the most well curated selection of shoes in the city. They also carry some apparel and fabulous handbags, but you’ll have to drive to the suburb of Leawood to find them. 4569 West 119th St, Leawood, KS 66209.
- Oklahoma Joe’s: featured on Travel Channel Anthony Bourdain’s 13 places to eat before you die, OKJ’s is located in a gas station convenience store but their BBQ is fingerlickin’ good. Best french fries in town. 3002 West 47th Ave, KCK, 66103.
- El Patron: Is it time for a margarita yet? Head to El Patron and your newest amigo (and the owner of the space) Arturo, will give you a friendly greeting and lead you to your cozy booth. This family-owned spot for tasty Mexican cusine is a little off the beaten path, but it’s delicious menu and hip atmosphere is absolutely worth it. 3063 Southwest Blvd, KCMO 64108.

Oh! My former city!
I will add this store from the northland (Parkville, specifically): Nine Lives. It’s right on the main drag of downtown and has a great mix of vintage and re-worked furniture and accessories. Lots of architectural salvage as well. I have a table from there that I am constantly getting compliments on.
this is wonderful!! thank you so much for this.. i can’t wait to follow the links.
Thank you so much for this! I am a Kansas City native currently living in Atlanta and I miss KC so much! Hopefully over the holidays I can get to a bunch of these places.
Thanks for giving this great town some notice!
hurrah for KC! i did a similar round-up for Country Home magazine–some of the same spots, but kate and i both visited some different spots. check it out here:
http://www.countryhome.com/shopping/weekendaway/kansascity_1.html
My hometown, too! I’m amazed at the crossroads area, and even river market. Makes me very happy that such awesome things are going on in KC.
In Lawrence, also check out the Lawrence Arts Center for great work in the gallery & a ton of cool stuff (Including my jewelry!) in the gift shop!
Glad to see K.C. is getting some attention in the design world. Nice work Kate!
Grace, I love the idea of being able to have a nicely bound copy of the guides so you can have it in hand on a trip.
I can’t believe I’d never heard of Blurb before. I am DEFINITELY going to use this the next time I need to print out my portfolio!
Thanks so much for putting bon bon atelier on the list, we read this blog everday and love our fellow design junkies! Oh, and we’ll have a shopping cart on the website soon!
I just moved to KCMO from Chicago. I’ve experienced extreme culture shock, mostly related to the fact that because everything here is so spread out, a car is a must!
But I’m finding that I love this city, too. I so appreciate this great guide. Thanks to First Fridays, I’ve visited many of the Crossroads stores, but I’m anxious to check out everything else.
Ahh, Kansas City! Yes, unfortunately the transportation system leaves something to be desired. Since I moved away to Portland, OR, so much revitalization has been happening, like the city market and the crossroads, even some stuff in the west bottoms besides haunted houses. I am not suprised that there wasn’t mention of the midtown/Westport area, but there is still some good dining and plenty of music venues to check out there. I’ll be back one day!
Thank you so much for posting about KC! I lived there for most of my life and didn’t realize, until I left, what a great place it is. You’ve mentioned some areas I never got to visit, so I’m planning to do so over the holidays. And, it’s nice to see the little city getting some attention!
Moved here from Tampa…so excited to be in a city with such a great design culture and so many places to shop!!!! Nothing like where I’m from! Thanks for the shout-out, DS!
I was so excited to see KC on here and then Lawrence at the end! I currently go to school at KU in Lawrence and live on Mass St. and love all the places you mentioned, (I live 2 stores down from Blue Heron and go in there at least twice a week!) It is also very fun to get out to KC every once in awhile and explore the design scene. I’m looking forward to checking out some of the places on your list I haven’t been to yet!
Awesome! I just moved to KC about 2 months ago, and I love this city! So many modern things going on
Wow, I really wish I had seen this before I spent two long, lonely days in Kansas City! It sounds like it has great stuff.
Way to go Kate. But what about the Legends. Just Kidding!
okay now to St Louis!!
Go Kate! Great guide. I would like to second the awesomeness of the Yarn Barn & Sara’s Fabric.
Im a graduate of the Kansas City Art Institute. I have lived all around the country, and have not yet experienced anything like this town. The art/design scene is very strong and close knit. Thanks for the survey, Im dying to get back.
There is a great shop 0n 54th street called willow. It is a combo florist and cool vintage furniture shop.
I think the Block Gallery is also a must see if you can get the hours right.
I love this city. It was an awesome place to go for art school!
I have been to 90% of these stores. Kate is right, They are all AMAZING! I encourage everyone to Shop Inde!
Kate – awesome list – many of my favorites and some I didn’t know existed. I can’t wait to come home for Xmas and check them all out!
thanks for reminding us natives to appreciate kc.
Kansas City is one of the best places to live and make art – part of that is the Kansas City Art Institute brings an amazing wealth of talent to the city each and every year. If you have not been to KC you are really missing out!
This is just what I needed to see as I am gearing up to head home to KC for the holidays. I am currently a interior design student at SCAD in Savannah and I would love to move back to KC to work after school. There is just so much going on these days I get incredibly excited at the thought of being a part of it.
Grace, I know there isn’t much in Houston, but I sure would appreciate a Houston Style Guide.. I am dying here. I have gone to some places but I am hungry to find some cool design shops.
I am sure you get requests for plenty of cities but I thought I would throw H-town in the ring. ;)
Thank you so much for this wonderful feature on Kansas City! I currently live in KC, and work in Lawrence…it’s great to see many of my favorite places featured.
Mpls? Please?
AWESOME AWESOME Building!
Please be my guest an add a link from your Kansas City Art Institute reference (thank you!) to the college’s Web site: http://www.kcai.edu
Thank you!
Totally great! I grew up in Kansas City for 8 years, and there is much to be discovered. My first art classes were at the Nelson-Atkins. And I loved touring the Hallmark Visitor’s Center. . . Need to give a quick shout out to Foo’s Fabulous Frozen Custard in Brookside (I still crave it to this day).
http://www.foosfabulousfrozencustard.com
and the best ribs ever at Arthur Bryant’s : a complete dive (at least it was when I was growing up), but the ribs wrapped in Wonder bread, douced in their amazing sauce with fries and wrapped in brown paper is pure heaven:

Nice article, It’s good to hear positive feed about our creative city… As a long time resident and gallery owner I believe this city has something to offer.. Please stop by and get cultured…=)
The Nelson-Atkins Museum was designed by BNIM Architects, in Kansas City. They have firm in Houston, which I was apart of 2 years ago. When we went to Kansas City for a business trip, we were able to tour the museum, before it was finished. It is beautiful, so excited to see it is getting the recognition it deserves!!
Casey
check out Fortner Hall Artisan Textiles in the Crossroads at 1919 Wyandotte St. (former location of Hammerpress) for beautiful handwoven organic blankets made from naturally colored merino wool.
I was quite surprised to see an article here about the design scene in Kansas City, and perhaps even more surprised to see who the author was. After living in the area for 8 years, it is good to see a bit of postive coverage for the oasis on the plains of Lawrence, KS. Good article Kate.
YAY! So happy to see all the fun places mentioned! As a KU grad and River Market resident, it’s just great to see all these places I love get mentioned somewhere. Nicely done, as always.
hooray! i’m thrilled to see this, and even happier to see my workplace blazoned across the top of the post.
we moved here from san francisco. at first i’ll admit it was a HUGE culture shock. kate is dead on about what it’s like getting around here, but kansas city has been wonderful to me. i still pinch myself and can’t believe i work at the nelson, and i now finally have the chance to fully pursue my creative work. great article kate.
I’ve been in KC for 2 years now. And there is cool stuff here. I live downtown. There is a lot of activity now the Sprint Center up and running. Can’t wait for teh shop to open in the Power & Light district!
This is a great overview of our fair city. Kudos to Kate for finding the best of the best.
Another favorite for family dining is Stroud’s. With a unique sweatshirt noting they “We choke our own chickens.” Perhaps not politically correct but a lot of comfort food at a reasonable price!
http://www.stroudsrestaurant.com/
I wanted to add a store to the crossroads district section: Straw, Sticks, and Bricks http://www.strawsticksandbricks.com/
This is a fantastic store for those interested in modern upgrades for their home, including great tile, Flor, and Richlite.
Hooray, so nice to see a KC overview. I live in midtown & work in Johnson county & get around by bus a lot. but the comments are true, this is a CAR town. Check out Eclectics at 70th & Oak, just down the street from Stuff, everything in the store is handmade. Also Bergamot & Ivy on West 43rd for some fabulous floral and home decor. Well, really, West 43rd has a row of local shops that are all wonderful, & then there’s the local places along West 39th…you can see a lot of cool independent design places riding the bus in kc….happy new year.
Having lived the first 28 yrs of my life in KC, this article made me SO homesick! To those of you lucky enough to live there, appreciate it!!! I have lived all over the country and KC is just unique… will be there in a few weeks and will check out the new shopping! Thanks!
I love Kansas City! I have to add one though-The Re-Runs Warehouse. It’s amazing!!! Re-runs has boutique shops located elsewhere, but this is the warehouse. It’s only open on Saturdays from 10am-4pm, located in West Bottoms. It’s all amazing vintage stuff, but insanely cheap. I bought a vintage blue 1960′s wool dress (totally Jackie-O) and it was $15! The place has also outfitted several major movies. I can’t rave about it enough!
Moving to Kansas City in August from Manhattan! Anybody want to be my crafty friend?
Skip Leawood/Johnson County, Briarcliff Village and of all places – Lawrence KS (wtf?) -which isn’t even in the MSA and visit real KC neighborhoods of interest like the City Market, Crown Center and Westport.
There are so many other good places, I won’t bother. Just want to ask how the entire city of Prairie Village, and some other stuff like Mission got lodged into the Brookside category?
Great list! I want to mention another place I’m not sure many people know about: Asiatica. They have textiles, pottery, jewelry – beautiful!

A nice list, but a little generic. It would be progressive if the list reflected some of the more substantial things that are going on in neighborhoods throughout the city, such as east crossroads, the west side, the north end, and the west bottoms.
nick
please feel free to leave any shops/stores/museums/spaces you feel should be added to the list- we’re always happy to update the list to reflect great local resources.
it sounds like you know some great spots so please do share.
grace
Ahhh.
Being a KC native in New York right now is hard. Thank god I have things like this to provide substantial proof that I do come from a legitimately cool city :)
this is wonderful!! thank you so much for this.. This is a great overview of our fair city. Kudos to Kate for finding the best of the best.

Correction on someone else’s post: The astonishingly gorgeous new Bloch Building addition to the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art was designed by Steven Holl. BNIM was just the local architect-of-record.
GRATEFUL, GRATEFUL THANKS
DEAR!!!!!!!!
now for st. louis!? right!?
Here are few West Bottoms resources (in response to the comments by Nick and Grace):
Hobbs Building – has open studios occasionally
http://www.hobbsbuilding.com/
Dolphin Gallery – re-opening the gallery September 12, now open for custom framing
http://www.thedolphingallery.com/
Livestock Exchange Building (interesting history/architecture)

Good JuJu (vintage finds)

And has no one mentioned Vintiques? They are now located in the River Market with better hours: http://www.vintiqueskc.com
I think a great cafe to check out in the Crossroads is YJ’s, I’m sure some of my friends say it’s over rated, but only during First Fridays, every other un bothered day, it’s just an awesome place to hang out.
Besides, it’s right next door to Peggy Noland, Spool and Birdies, all amazing stores ran really awesome ladies. Totally check it.
I’ve lived in KC most of my life, but there are some amazing places on your list that I have never seen! I have the misfortune of being so unobservant. Thanks for setting the agenda for my weekend! (and a shout out to west 39th st- don’t forget about us!)
great kc guide! of course, a few years in, there’s a TON more out in the joco area (yes, i live there!) like the entirely new shopping centre at 119 and roe, with z gallerie, another apple store (fun fact, kc is the only city (maybe besides nyc) with two apple stores), several boutiques, like mitzy’s london, and some trendy new eateries – jp’s wine bar and north, which bills itself as modern italian and is superb.
town center, across the street has also expanded a bit, especially with the new park place on the backside with the outdoor skating rink.
but overall, i agree that most of kc’s charm is up in westport, brookside, and the plaza … and now you have to add the p&l for nights out onto the list! great job!
Yes it is all true! Moved here from Detroit is ’67 thinking this place to be a cow town. Amazing how it has changed.
Yeah. I love KC & Lawrence. Moved here from Hong Kong (on the other side of the globe) and it was such a cultural shock for me, but I can’t image leaving this place.
Anyway, there are a lot more places opened up around KC today, like the Legend shopping district. It’s seriously cool. The Power and Light district is already a popular night-time hangout area; it’s close to the crossroad district, so after a Frist Friday, enjoy the evening at P&L.
A few corrections. It sounds like this article was written by a suburbanite who doesn’t know much about the actual city.
1. The Crossroads District is at 18th and Grand.
2. The urban core is very walkable – Downtown, Crossroads, Midtown, Westport, Plaza, Brookside, etc.
3. There is good transit in the urban core. The MAX bus runs frequently from the River all the way to Waldo.
The ‘original’ Crossroads District was centered around 19th and Baltimore and the galleries there in the late 1990′s. Since then about anything from 18th to 22nd (North and South) and Grand to Broadway (East and West) pretty well counts as the Crossroads…and it continues to push beyond those borders.
For those folks who DO decide to venture to Prairie Village (I’d have to agree that it certainly ISN’T Brookside, though it’s not terribly far) check out the Bloomsbury Bistro inside of the Mission Road Antique Mall. You can get a fresh, fabulous lunch while hunting down the priceless collectibles. (Shameless plug for the chef/owner, my friend, Cari Jo Cavalcante.)
Lastly. 39th street from Southwest Trafficway to State Line is a fun stroll with great restaurants and some cool shops. Go to Fric & Frac. It’s been THE neighborhood anchor for ALMOST 40 years. Great food (burgers, sandwiches) and a really good time.
I would like to thank you about this great article, i think it is about time to talk about the art and Design in Kansas City.
this is a beautiful representation of my hometown and still current residence. i am going to art school now, and while i had plans to graduate and move away, kansas city is just too good. it is definitely changing daily and has had an amazing revival so it’s worth a trip. it’s sad how overlooked we are here in the midwest! we don’t live in teepees and aren’t on the set of the wizard of oz.
anyway. you should also check out spivey’s in westport. http://www.spiveysbooks.com/
this little shop features an amazing collection of old books, maps, city plans, and art prints. it’s in an absolutely beautiful building as well.
also anyone looking for some nice vintage housewares (lamps, dishes, trays, etc.) should look at boomerang on 39th and pennsylvania because they have an amazing collection. they specialize in russel wright.
a recent addition to try in westport is mash handmade (at 39th and pennsylvania, next to boomerang)…handmade home accessories by local and national artists…www.mashhandmade.com
I have lived in Kansas City/Johnson County my whole life and I’m so glad you showed the awesome places we have here!
don’t forget pryde’s in westport!!! FANTASTIC kitchen store selling everything you could imagine and everything you never knew you needed in a kitchen.
would a dining guide to kc be appreciated? there are so many new local places around now, from downtown to the suburbs.
I just moved to Kansas City from the Northeast — from what I hear from everyone, a LOT has changed here, especially in the downtown area, where I currently reside in a beautiful loft in the old Kansas City Gentleman’s Club. This calls for an update!
Still, I am glad I found this post — I’ve only been here for a year and I am pleasantly surprised that there are so many new things to discover.
I’ve lived here all my life and still am surprised by new things. I agree with all the above. Crossroad district and first friday is a MUST.
here are a few that need to be added.
handcrafted bread from Fervere… get there early they sell out fast!
http://www.fervere.com/
right next to Fervere is the blue bird… a must.
http://www.bluebirdbistro.com/
and in the same area you can catch a show at Screenland.

Love this tribute to my beloved Kansas City! Just had breakfast at Succotash this morning and it was wonderful as usual, with its funky charm and fantastic servers.
A very nice guide for the downtown/midtown/central portion of the city.
The restaurants do seem to slant heavily to the coffee shop, brewery, trendy upscale set, which is a shame because there are some amazing sushi, vietnamese, and other ethnic restaurants in those areas (Vietnam Cafe, Hien Vuong, Domo, Kabuki, Kona, Sung Son, Jerusalem Cafe all come to mind).
I was glad to see the other guide listed Pryde’s Old Westport because that is one of the best places to go for kitchen wares and pie.
However, the other guide failed to mention Oklahoma Joe’s in the list of KC’s best bbq, so that’s a huge oversight.
Thanks for giving me some new places to add to my list of places to go.
For shopping, go to
– Birdies (116 West 18th Street) for fantastic one-of-a-kind ladies’ underwear and nightwear
- Halls (at the Plaza or Crown Center) It’s an amazing department store with high-end clothing, accessories and shoes. Wonderful sales.
- Donna’s Dress Shop (1410 W 39 St) for vintage and new clothing.
For eats, there are so many great places in Kansas City, it would be absolutely criminal for you to visit any chain. My favorite place for affordable, yet delightful food is:
El Porton (4671 Indian Creek Parkway) A family-owned Latin American Bistro. http://www.elportoncafe.com
Kansas City is an amazing city – artistically robust with a great food culture, yet super accessible and unpretentious. It’s great to have this updated review that includes many of our gems.
It’s a misconception that visitors to KC need a car to get around. The MAX bus system runs all the way through the urban core.
It runs from the River Market to Brookside/Waldo with stops downtown (like at our beautiful new performing arts center & walking distance to power & light district), the Crossroads (with walking distance to the Westside), Crowne Center (near the amazing WWI museum), the Kemper and Nelson art museums (walking distance to Westport) and the Plaza.
Vietnam Cafe in Columbus Park is amazing! Over the past few years I’ve managed to try just about everything on the menu but the $6 bowl of amazing chicken pho is mind-blowing!
Yay KC! Really good to see this updated list. I live in the Crossroads and I can’t imagine a better spot in the city! Also, check out my very favorite wine shop in town, Cellar Rat Wine Merchants. They specialize in providing incredible options in the $10-$25 range. Unpretentious, helpful, and totally hip! Shout out to Ryan and the crew!
Also, I can’t tell you how happy I am that Manifesto is back open. The very best cocktails, anywhere!
PS. JP’s Wine Bar is now closed at both locations. Main St. is now Tannin Wine Bar, and the 119 location is the second location for La Bodega.
SO HAPPY to see the update! i’m going to include Nara, a trendy sushi restaurant in the Crossroads. It’s been voted the Best Sushi in KC, and is also Zagat rated.
Two places that didn’t get into this revision:
Liberty Belle – http://www.libertybellekc.com/
Just around the corner from Good Juju, it’s another monthly antiques market.
Cellar & Loft – http://www.libertybellekc.com/
Cute new wine shop in the Rivermarket area where you can get wine samples from a wine machine.
Perfect, perfect, perfect. I love Kansas City and you listed all of the wonderful, beautiful things about KC that I miss so much. Well done!
Much of this list is quite similar to the popular series “Eat Shop (Kansas City)”. I highly recommend the book. Also, you don’t have to text the owner at Manifesto in order to drink and be merry. Come early in the week. While lowering yourself down the stairs, conjure up images of Buffalo Bill’s basement in Silence of the Lambs. “It rubs the lotion on its skin”!
http://www.therecordbar.com
-best live music/neighborhood bar
http://www.edenalley.com
-best vegetarian food
I think it should be mentioned that Liberty Belle, Urban Mining and Good Juju are only open first Friday and that weekend. Dharma Gallery is new to the Westport area. Another recently opened is Thistle Vintage Studio 329 Southwest Blvd. in the Crossroads. It is also open the first Thursday-Sunday of each month. All of these places are so much fun. We try to hit as many as we can every month.
I loved this! I moved recently after 6 years in Kansas City, and oh, I miss it! I second Edens Alley for vegetarian food, and Waldo Pizza is the best pizza in Kansas City. It’s amazing.
I can’t believe no one has mentioned Peggy Noland! One of the most unique places I have ever been.
Someone should add it if they get the chance! I sight to see!
Moving to KC this summer and trying to decide where to live – Brookside or Hyde Park. Would like to be able to walk to bars, restaurants and shopping
Speaking of Urban Mining, I found a really great Eames exec. office chair last weekend. It was a total surprise, as I’d been looking for one, but couldn’t afford it. The lady at the booth who sold it was so cool. I think she is an angel from heaven and she brought the chair with her!
I’m glad to see this great list and also the link Rachel provided.
But I have to say no list on Brookside is complete unless it includes a mention of Stuff. http://www.pursuegoodstuff.com/
This shop owned by two awesome sisters is THE cooolest place for unique gifts – STUFF..and lots of it.
Add their commitment to the community and all of the great causes they support with Diva Day, Wings of hope, etc and you have THE perfect shop!
Thanks for this guide! We’re heading to KC in October, so I’ll be sure and check out some of these awesome spots while we’re there.
nice! I have lived in KC for a total of 20 years and you have nearly mentioned everything worth mentioning! The only places I would add are Record Bar (great music here), Buzzard Beach (best dive ever), Po’s Dumplings (best chinese food ever), Aladdin Cafe, Eden Alley (best vegetarian restaurant ever), and the crossroads district for First Fridays if you don’t mind crowds.
oh gosh! wish i knew about these places when I spent half a year bored out of my mind in kansas city! thank the lord i found some of these places through word of mouth & google–but it kind of makes me want to go back!
My daughter lived there for a year. She purchasewd me a necklace from Artistic Works by LULU…..I am trying to contact the store????Anyone know where it is?
I LOVE KC! Born and raised and I now live in OKC. Let me tell you how much I miss KC!!! It seriously is one underestimated piece of magic!! Thanks for sharing about the gem! I love First Fridays. Some interesting people!!!
Has anyone heard of jewellery by Morgan Kansas Town Missouri? I was setting up on visiting the shop but I am not sure about it. Does anyone know everything?!
**this store has moved! We are now the Coveted Home, located in the Corinth Shops in Prairie Village, KS at 83rd and Mission!! We still offer design services and we have a great selection of unique home accessories and furnishings! We would love to see you in at some point :)
