This weekend, AC and I managed to sell a good chunk of our furniture in preparation for moving to a new apartment. I decided it’s time for me to really make good on all the advice I give people to invest in fewer, nicer pieces and actually do that myself. So part of the mid-century furniture purge was about saving up some funds to purchase some great handcrafted furniture for our new space. While rocking chairs aren’t necessarily on my list of must-haves yet (those spots are occupied by a nice living room rug and new couch), this amazing handcrafted rocking chair from Shawn Place Designs is seriously calling my name. All of their furniture is handcrafted by Shawn, from the timber shaping to the hand-woven seats. I’ve always had a soft spot for woven back/seat furniture (it reminds me of the chairs I grew up with at our dining table), and this seems like a beautiful way to invest in something handmade and of extraordinarily high quality. All of Shawn’s pieces have the same sort of simple, striking beauty that I love — from the seating designs to the minimal tables. If you’re looking into handcrafted furniture and want to see something really gorgeous, I highly suggest checking out Shawn Place’s work right here. Thanks so much to Erin MacDermott for the tip and promoting a local B.C. designer. xo, grace

That rocking chair is just lovely – it should be a future classic.
It’s such a shame there isn’t more design like this on the high street, especially here in the UK.
very cool !
swoon. i love that rocker.
Gotta love that rocker. It fits in with almost everything.
Need more versions of that here in the United States.
Those are beautiful, but the woven seats look like something my cats would LOVE to scratch. Maybe your little beasts aren’t so inclined, but I’d be wary of any sort of woven wicker/straw on that account.
Oh yay! Shawn is a good friend of a good friend. So great to see his beautiful work here! Go B.C.!
Wow, gorgeous. I’d love to get the rocker for our new home. The website doesn’t list prices – does anyone know what the rocker retails for? Many thanks
I completely agree the idea of saving to invest in handcrafted/high quality furniture. My husband and I have decided that we’d really like to never even consider “disposable” furniture again! Would you consider writing a post about some of your favorite sources for finding and researching this kind of furniture? Sometimes, it is difficult to know where to start…
I love, love, love this. I only wish they had a slightly taller version so I could use this in a modern nursery. Will have to find some other place for it soon.
I’m drooling over that rocker.
check out some of his other designs the globe and mail did a FULL PAGE article/photos on Shawn Place Designs…. beautiful pieces.
