Party Girl is a new-to-me favorite recently suggested by a commenter. 1995? Parker Posey? New York? Sounds like a classic in the making. Tired of scraping by as an unemployed party promoter, Mary (Posey) tries halfheartedly to make rent on her Chinatown loft by taking a job as a library clerk. The ultimate ’90s wild child has a hard time adjusting to the world of shhh-ing, but lord, it’s fun to watch her try.

Rarely do the worlds of glam glitter heels and library science collide, so when then do, we must take note. Party Girl is a sweet little homage to the New York club-kid heyday of the 1990s and it also speaks to everyone who has ever been in a funk and needed to pull themselves up to reach their full potential — while wearing glittery heels, of course. — Amy M.

OMG! I love when you do these movie postings…and now…you’ve done it for one of my all-time fave movies! I loved all her kookie outfits — esp the rave outfit. Now I can have the earrings LOL
I just thought of this when they did the Mannequin on Community last week.
“He-He-Hallao!”
Anyway this movie led me to my love of layering every color. J. Crew tissue tees, wearing 4 at a time… and the leggings in NYC in 1995??? oh the days.
“What’s up buttercup? The rent, and I’m not payin’!”
Love this post :)
im right there with you Jai! omg – i love love love love this movie so much! my favorite part is when parker posey is daydreaming about her falafel-man and he takes his leather jacket off and the steam is rising from his food cart. so awesome! thanks so much for posting this!
Glam glitter heels and library sicence collide all the time at my work (I am a librarian and I work with several stylish 20 somethings). Librarians by day and glam girls by night! Thanks for the post, this is so awesome!

He-He … Hellooo…
Thank you so much! I love this film! It was my first foray into the films of Parker Posey … I must have watched this a thousand times DREAMING of living her crappy life!!
I LOVED this movie when I was in high school, the scene where she is dancing in the library, might be one of my top ten movie scenes ever, Parker Posey has to be one of the most adorable actresses alive, in my opinion.
indeed. one of the few movies i own. def. one of my favorites. love that you included the falafel – with hot sauce, a side order of babaganouj, and a seltzer please. ;)
“I’ll have a falafel with hot sauce, some babganoush, and a seltzer please.” God I loved that movie. Great post!

Ahhhhh!!! Party Girl is such a classic from my college years.
party girl is my favorite thing in LIFE. i have the movie poster framed above my bed. this post made my day! THANK YOU!!
My favorite line was, “A trained monkey could learn this in a matter of hours!” Love this movie. And those glitter shoes would still make any work day better.
Swing by so we can Frock your world!
Angie and Ali
I loved this movie so much I bought it on tape.
Yay!!!
I looooooooooved this movie when I was in high school! And now I’ll be watching online Parker Posey bits instead of doing my work. Or maybe I should dance around the office doing the yawn?
I love love love this movie too! This will inspire me to watch it again — and in my memory, her love interest was super dreamy…

” Can I have a falafel with hot sauce, a side order of Baba Ghanoush and a seltzer, please?”
This is one of my favorite movies. I love that glitter and library science collided in this post!
This movie was my anthem when I graduted from college in 95. Have been a Parker Posey fan and a baba ganoush with hot sauce ever since. He he hello great pic to live in
Love this film. May have to break out my VHS copy and watch it! I also have 2 leopard print coats because of this film!
Aww, how fitting! One day I am definitely buying a card catalog for our home. We have a tiny metal one now that I gave to Jason full of important dates for our first anniversary. Also, the turntable=yes. This post made me smile.
I just watched this movie last night!
That was one of my favorite stills of her eating breakfast! So great!
Love this one! Amy- would you consider doing Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner or How to Marry a Millionaire. Two of my faves. :)
I miss Parker Posey in movies like this! I wish she was in more movies! I would rather watch her than most of the “leading ladies” at the moment.
I think you might be surprised how much glam glitter heels and the library world do collide.
Most (female) Librarians I know are in the late twenties/early thirties are vintage wearing, crafting, swearing, Parker Posey-s.
Then, there are the guybrarians…

I always love your “Living In” posts, but this one especially. Maybe it’s because I’m a sucker for library accoutrement, or maybe it’s because I just bought a vintage leopard coat for myself. :)
One of my favorite movies of all time! I used to own it on VHS :) It also inspired me to take the leap to become a librarian…
I love this!
In college, I worked at as library clerk and was a bit of a party type, so this movie has always held a special place in my heart.
Parker Posey is a favorite in this flick…..good choice Grace, good choice.
I’ve never seen this, but it sounds great! And I love her raw loft… young, struggling artist types always seem to live in lofts in Manhattan like that in the movies…
Have to agree with La Bibliothécaire, there’s a MLIS crowd that knows how to rock glittery glam in the stacks.
Great post!
This movie brings pack sooooo many memories from back in highschool. Back then, when my dad found out I loved Parker Posey, he bought this movie for me on laser disc (he only bought the good stuff on laser disc), but he got this without even really knowing what it was, and after watching it, he was like “whatever”, but me: OMG, I was in love forever, I was the epitome of the life we were leading back then (except I was still in highschool and living cushy at home)
Yes! That is my favorite movie! I get excited every time somone brings it up. And those glitter shoes are great!
haven’t seen this in ages – i’ll have to remedy that
i neeeeed that librarian storage cabinet. it is absolutely beautiful!!
Parker Posey is the bees knees!
I must get that movie tonight – just what I need!!!
Thanks DesignSponge!!
that librarian pin is rad!
Aw, I’m bummed — you covered her attire and library stuff, but I was hoping to see you take on her loft decor. That’s what I always coveted about Party Girl.
I love the silver glitter shoes!!! I want it!!
Ah love it – I’m a Librarian! How did I miss this!
Brava, Amy. It certainly speaks to many of us now, & those of who remember — gasp — the oil shock & global recession of the 1970s. I flew off to France on my own at 17 & wow, did I have to make do. No one subsidized me. This just gave me an idea to post on what I did do. So thanks for the inspiration–quite unexpected (like the best inspiration, yes?).
Parker Posey – one of my all time favorite actresses. I could watch her movies all day and never tire of her talent.
Oh its not fair I would love to watch it but I cant find a dvd compatible with UK player, looks amazing though!
Oh, my goodness…I always get so happy when you do your movie posts. We seem to love the same films. But now you have done it, you featured my husbands favorite movie. How cool!
Fritzi Marie
holy crap! i am so excited to see this!
PARTY GIRL IS MY ALL TIME FAVORITE!
oh i could list off so many great scenes!!
i screened the film SUPER LARGE in my backyard a couple birthdays ago! i love you party girl….
one of my all time favorite movies!!!!!
This is one of my favorite movies! My friend Daisy directed/wrote this , her mom Sasha was the Aunt Judy character, and a family friend Margaret Hall was the used clothing store owner. Its is a perfect glimpse into 1990′s NYC club scene before NY was totally homogenized!
YES. yes yes yes!!!
Love this! Totally forgot about this movie and its zeitgeist and how much I love it. Thanks for featuring our Personal Library Kit! Go libraries and date stamps! http://www.knockknock.biz/catalog/categories/kits/personal-library-kit/new-and-improved-personal-library-kit/
I just watched this movie on Netflix last week for the ump-teenth time. Love the Voguing contest at the club, the Middle Eastern themed party, and Leiv Schreiber as the potential date-raping Kangol hat wearing bouncer!
The first time my friend and I saw this, we immediately rewound it an rewatched it. LOVE.
Have seen this movie upward of 10 to 15 times. Have worn out a VHS tape, even. Perfectly captures that time!
I don’t know how I missed this gem of a movie before being quite the fan of Parker Posey. I found it on instant Netflix and watched it within hours of reading your post. LOVED it.
I love this movie! I also worked as a library clerk in college. My favorite scene is when she is dancing alone in the library. Good times!
Does anyone know where I can get the same style of shoes Parker Posey wears on the poster to ‘Party Girl”? =)
Any info would be appreciated!
I was her for halloween two years ago

No one cared.
Love to see a Living in Practical Magic post! These movie posts are great fun!
I have those earrings! When I was trying to decide to buy them, my cousin said “go big or go home.” Nice life motto.
I forgot about how much I love this movie!
