food as muse

I feel like I ate my weight in delicious clam chowder this week, so I’ve still got tasty New England food on my mind. And since I pretty much always have some sort of food on my mind, I felt like I’d found a kindred spirit when I saw these food-themed paintings from Detroit artist John Azoni. Rather than rolling hills and picturesque seascapes, John finds inspiration in stacks of pancakes, juicy hamburgers and freshly cut avocados. Growing up with a father who cooked gourmet dishes on Sunday afternoons instilled in John a great appreciation for food. He decided to document this love for healthy and guilt-inducing foods alike by creating small paintings that he sells on Etsy. I love John’s slightly loose and informal style — it fits so many of his subjects (donuts and pizza are some of my favorites) perfectly. You can pick up one of John’s paintings right here for $60 — it would make a great holiday gift for the food-lover in your life. xo, grace

Who Counts Thoughts

I really want the these paintings in a large format. Any way that might happen?

So fun. I was actually painting apples this weekend for my own little Etsy shop. I’m not generally into painting food. (Glass vases and silk are my thing.) Still, sometimes it is a fun subject. So many textures and colors to capture.

I bought the pancake painting. I am disappointed in it. There is a visible ball point pen outline – which just looks like a dark line in the digital image. The actual painting just doesn’t look as rich as the digital image portrays.
