behind the bar: tina frey’s negroni

by Ryan and Alissa Walker

This past August, while browsing the show in New York, Alissa and I had the great opportunity to spend some time with the talented and effervescent Tina Frey. Tina is the genius designer/superwoman behind the San Francisco based Tina Frey Designs.  Originally started as a creative outlet, Tina has grown her resin-based line to include everything from tabletop to vases to jewelry to decorative pieces.  Tina is the type of person that inspires creativity, passion and fun and we couldn’t be more proud to be featuring her favorite drink for this month’s post.  [Ryan + Alissa]

P.S.  Tina’s work can be found at stores worldwide – such as Merci, Birch, Global Table, Cristina dos Santo and Molla Sense – and also in her own web-shop.  Make sure to check out her blog too!  Now onto Tina…

“The drink I selected is called the Negroni This is the perfect aperitif to stimulate the appetite…particularly before a nice big Italian meal!”

History:  The drink is reported to have been invented in Florence, Italy in 1919 at Cafe Carsoni.  Count Camillo Negroni is rumored to have invented the drink by asking the bartender to make the Americano cocktail stronger by substituting the soda water with gin.  The orange garnish was also changed from the original lemon garnish to signify the different drink.  I personally selected it because it brings back great memories of my travels in Italy and all the delicious food!  I also love the beautiful orange/amber color of the cocktail, the sound of the ice clinking around the glass, the simplicity of the ingredients and ease of preparation.

1 Part Gin

1 Part Sweet Vermouth

1 Part Campari

Large Nice Ice Cubes!

Orange (for the peel)

Old fashioned glass

Put large ice cubes into your glass.  It is very important to have really nice large chunky ice cubes!  Combine equal parts of the above ingredients over the ice cubes.  Garnish with orange peel.  Swirl around and enjoy!
