I suppose I should just come right out and say that my love for Dazed and Confused isn’t based off of aesthetics, strictly speaking. I mean I appreciate the 70′s and all, but it’s the disarmingly funny portrayal of both teenaged boredom and excitement that get me every time. Honestly, I thought I was the only one who really loved this movie. Then I told Grace I was going to do it for the column and she said she loved it, too. Then I did some preparatory research and found that, bam, it’s been inducted into the citerion collection, a giant the stamp of approval from the arty crowd. Apparently, Dazed and Confused is kind of a big deal so y’all better sharpen your pencils for our time warp to 1976.
Billiard ball set $49, 70′s clock $18, fender acoustic guitar $199, marroni whistle pendant $1790, wooden incense burner $1.50, pacifier $9, ketchup & mustard bottles $16, McQ high waisted jeans $65, fossil leather backpack $218.

Dazed and Confused takes place over the course of one single day and night, as the last day of school draws to a close in suburban Texas. Notebooks are strewn, freshmen are hazed, some aimless driving happens, cheap beer is consumed, a few punches are thrown and yet in the middle of all of that normalcy, there is a really poignant recollection of what it feels like to be young, excited and also dissatisfied with life. I find myself quoting it once a week, much to the annoyance of all around me. And now to include you in those annoyed ranks, all I can say is Check ya later…. -Amy M.
Baseball jersey $10, sustainable party cups $17, Luxo L-1 desk lamp $300, “the dark side of the moon” vinyl $24, wooden pencils $2/dozen, fiberglass pod chair $2370, manchester media stand $88.

seriously. love! i have been quoting this movie for over 10 years – one of the best films ever and of course, best soundtracks ever. i love this – especially the red cups – SO good!
Oh my God. LOVE THIS. Sadly, I missed the 70′s (and half of the 80′s) but this is one of my all time favorite movies. So classic.
This movie was on last week and I hadn’t seen it in forever. I love it! What a fun post! Thanks!
xoxo
should be “Livin in”… L-I-V-I-N :)
LOVE dazed and confused, classic!
Oh man, I used to love this movie. I watched it so many times when I was in high school.
Top Notch is still there, by the way—I used to pass by it all the time when I lived in Austin.
Oh…I love this movie too. It’s so spot on. The Mathew Mcconaughey character. I grew up in a small Oklahoma town and we had a guy that looked and acted exactly like him. I think he’s still cruising the town and picking up high school chicks. I love this as an inspiration. I’m going to go rent it on Netflix now. Haven’t seen it in so long.
When I first told a high school friend I was choosing UT-Austin for college, she rented me this movie and Slacker. D&C won out for the one that would stick in my brain forever. Like you, I can be caught quoting it often (but, not as much as The Big Lebowski). My usual lines, though, are “It’d be a whole lot cooler if you did” and “I wanna dance!”
p.s. AIR RAID!!!!
LOL!!! Somebody beat me to the “L-I-V-IN” reference!
Yay, Dazed and Confused! I heart that movie :)
It was filmed in my hometown, Austin, Tx – and I kid you not, I work two blocks away from that Top Notch burger place. I’m looking at it out my window right now, in fact…and I may have to go grab a burger for lunch today, now that you’ve got me thinking about it. :D
Love this! There’s no putting a pricetage on watching your friends sigh and shake their heads when you reply to any number of sentences with “well it’d be a lot cooler if you diidd…”. Fab job finding the accessories to match :)
Great movie! I used to have that clock above, but in red when I was a kid in the 70s!
Feeling sentimental and hungry for Top Notch…would that I had a leather backpack as cool as that one. Not even “real” Austin kids had those – our moms maybe, but they didn’t share.
i LOVE this movie and i think this my favorite role matthew mcconaughey has ever been in…”well it would be cooler if you did” love that line!! 70′s is one my favorite areas for decor, textiles and fashion!
xo,

I’ve just gotta say…I bought ketchup/mustard squeeze bottles at Dollarama not long ago. I would hate to see people spend 16x that much elsewhere ;)
Best movie EVER. Love the post!!! Think it’s time for a Dazed and Confused watch party; costume-themed, of course…
I came here to drink some beer and kick some ass. Looks like we’re out of beer.
Makes me want to go out and get a sixer right now. I am stuck at work though. But you know, it’s money in my pocket.
air-raid. love this movie!
Alright, alright, alright!
I love this movie! I mean look at Matthew M. And I lived in Austin when the movie came out so I loved it even more back then. It’s just a cool movie. I need to rent this and watch it again!!
That clock is broken. One of the hands is laying on the bottom. Hmmmm. Maybe that’s why it’s only $18.
seriously love this movie. the cast is awesome, so many great one-liners. And I went to school with Cole Hauser, the curly-haired redhead in picture numero 3. great post!
lol. hadley- you win the eagle-eye award for that one! i checked the images on urban and they’ve changed the clock images so you totally must have been right ;)
g
It’s still there! lol.

Click on the brown clock. Funny- I wonder when they will realize. :)
hadley
for some reason i don’t see it on the red one? that said, it’s def. fallen in this shot above, great catch ;)

love this movie! we’ve been quoting this movie for years! great post.
OMG I’ve never been more excited for a “living in.” I ADORE this movie. Favorite quote? “That’s what I love about these high school girls, man. I get older, they stay the same age.” Love. Just love!
This movie is a classic. And the best lines come from drunk Parker Posey “Wipe that face of your head, bitch.” and “Lick me, all of you!”
paige
you nailed it- that line was the best. ;)

Haaaaaaaa. The ‘Fuh Q’ paddle was insaaane and provided consistent entertainment between my sisters and I.
Me at the dinner table: “What letter comes before Q?”
Sister at the dinner table: “Fuh.”
Parents at the dinner table: “GROUND-ED.”
Oh, the memories.
Love this movie, love that you used it for this column, and LOVE that I can get all this junk at my local thrift shop for about 30 buckeroos.
this literally was my high school. i remember watching it literally a week after a house party had been dissolved before it started and everyone drove to the local “bunny park” out in the woods, on the delta and got drunk till dawn. this movie made high school nostalgic for me, even when I was still in high school.
Oh My Gosh. I love you for this!!! Little tid-bit of information. None of the movie rental places can keep this movie in my town. It gets stolen every single time they buy one. True story.
Behind every good man there is a woman, and that woman was Martha Washington, man…. she was a hip, hip, hip lady, man.
i so need that back pack! great movie choice!
oooh, good one jen ;)

One of my fave movies! Love this post — you’ve inspired me to put together an outfit based on D&C now!
“It’s like my Sergeant always said in the Army. Men! 50 of you are going into the jungle…25 of you ain’t coming back!”
LOVE IT!
so funny, over the weekend I watched Fast Times at Ridgemont High and kept thinking, “hmmm, Living In?…nah, she’d never go for it.” But now that i see you’ve a soft spot for high school coming-of-age film classics…???
its like watching the older kids of my childhood…i was graduating from kindergarten in 1976…..LOVE everthing about this movie…
SUCH a great movie. tidbits of information: This was M.M.’s first movie. He came to the audition with that character already worked out. It was all him. Richard Linklater (director) grew up in Huntsville Tx and all those characters were real people from his high school. I think he just changed their names a little. Apparently some of those guys wanted to sue bc of the likeness. Anyway, classic movie with countless great lines!
oh, D&C! love, love, love.
in my book, there are only a few movies that have the brilliant combination of feel good tunes, impeccable style and witty one-liners – empire records, ALL of the john hughes films, clueless are some of these unforgettable films that i can never get enough of :)
i have always wanted that pod chair from pickford’s bedroom!
I have to say that I when I first got on your blog and saw the first photo I was instantaneously excited and I couldn’t figure out what the picture was from at that moment but I knew it was from something I absolutely loved. Thanks for bringing me such good feelings :)
I LoVed this movie because I knew those people, I partied with those people. Rock On.
Ha, we were actually talking about Dazed & Confused in the office today! Unfortunately it was Ben Affleck’s movie career that led us to the conversation, but we’re here in Austin & mostly all native Texans. The life depicted is reminiscent of life here when the drinking age was 18, though little changed when that raised to 21.
Oh, and the guy across from me was actually a Delt with MM while at UT.
Small World! Especially in Austin, Tx.
you thought you were the only one who loved this? everyone loves this movie! it’s the best. it’s a classic. it’s a linklater. and it has a super hot matthew mcconaughey before he became a creepy joke. the best.
Thes movie take’s part of my life till my teenage! ^_^ love it, the soundtrack is great, and is funny to see all that actors together ….
Richard Linklater has very good films ,,,love it!!
U have great taste ^__^
i have just discoverd this blog. and i looooove it!
Love this movie and have had the soundtrack for years… I just can’t get enough of the original high waisted denim!
Oooooh, love it! This movie is high school for me – the hazing, the music, the clothes and hair – when I was a freshman Kiss was doing a stadium gig in Atlanta the first weekend of school – crazy! Takes me down memory lane every time I watch it!
Love this! A great study of the era! Style, culture, morals… (“that’s what I love about these high school girls. I keep getting older and they stay the same age). I laugh and reminisce about when I was that age every time I see it!
I like to watch this movie around once a year because it always make me laugh. Parker Posey is one of my favorite crazy actresses… LOL
love the movie. own it on VHS!! too bad i don’t have anything to watch it on
Yeahhh… having lived the time and place, the movie just stirs up some nasty sediment for me. On the other hand, Parker Posey.
I am so happy you did this one! This is one of my favorite movies and you did a wonderful job.
Such a great choice! I have always loved this movie because it so accurately reflects what high school was like for me, and I live on the west coast of Canada and graduated in the mid nineties.
Love the Manchester Media stand! What a great new take on mid-century modern lines…. and love Amy’s collection of inspiration from this classic.
Party at the Moon Tower!
Since I live in Austin and frequently drive by the Top Notch burger drive in. I fondly remember this movie. Having successfully lived through high school in the ’70′s and in Texas This movie is so true to life.
i love this movie! the school is actually the middle school i went too (bedicheck middle school)! they had just finished filming the summer before i entered 6th grade. the shop teacher in the movie was the actual teacher at bedicheck, mr. mcfarland.
Oh, I can hear the opening guitar licks of “Free Ride” right now! I was 12 in 1976 (love the teacher’s comments about the “Bicentennial brou-ha-ha”), and sadly, my friends and I wore pants like the soon-to-be-9th grade BOYS (yes, I’m a gal). I wish I had as much style as the older high school girls in the movie, but it was not to be…
♥♥♥
can’t believe I had missed this one. Perfect.
