I had almost forgotten how much I loved Big as a kid until recently. Set in 1988, smack dab in the middle of my impressionable youth, Big tells the story of a 12 year old boy who wishes to be an adult and poof, overnight turns 30. Funny, because 30 seemed a whole lot older that last time I saw the movie back in middle school. Since 30 is approaching surely and swiftly, it’s safe to say I’ve become permanently big.
Zoltar fortune telling machine $9000, cotton candy maker $42, varsity jacket $196, ceramic coffee cup $11, nathan’s famous hot dog, camera bag $28, baseball $3, arrow light $, roll of tickets $4.

1980s kid things still hold great sway over me. I remember being utterly transfixed with Josh Baskin’s fancy pants New York loft, complete with indoor trampoline and a soda machine that, gasp, didn’t need quarters. Looking back on what I thought it meant to be a grown up, or at least the things I was so excited to be able to do, is such a blast. Pizza, all hours of the day. A big apartment. Staying up late and not having homework. Tonight I will be particularly sure to relish my late night ice cream run, funded by my own grown-up money, all while plotting to finally get that indoor trampoline. Because you are never too old for a massive trampoline in your loft. -amy m.

One of my favorite movies! I definitely dreamed of living in that NY loft complete with indoor trampoline and a giant keyboard.
LOVE this! BIG was such a significant movie in my world at the time too! what kid didn’t imagine all the “Cool” stuff they’d have once they were Big too! Thanks for the trip down memory lane. ALso- with my big 3-0 approaching next year- might be good to revisit what I though I’d have by then!
The actor who played the kid version of Tom Hanks was spotted in Hollywood the other day by the TMZ camera guys. He told them that people send him Facebook pictures of Zoltar machines that they spot all around the country! Crazy.
I love Big! And wow, I didn’t remember that he turns into a thirty-year-old in the movie. I just turned thirty last week, but I still don’t feel “big”. :)
I love this movie too!! I totally remember loving the loft too and thinking that’s the kind of apt I would have when I was an adult. Funny how you think when you’re a kid, eh? My favourite part is the giant keyboard in the dept store though – I wanted one of those SO bad!
The best movie ever! I love the loft! Is my
dream house! Since I was a child, I dream with live
in that loft! Thanks!
So awesome! I love big!!
I love love love this movie. Thanks for doing this. Ah now I need to Netflix it.
This made me smile, thanks for this great post!! I love the silly string scene.
What, no giant piano? :-P
I kid! This is a great Living In! What a fun movie! Now I’m feeling all sorts of nostalgic for 80s movies!
One of my all-time favorite movies! Yep, I loved the loft too! Lucky me – I received the dvd as a Christmas gift last year. :-)
Heck Yes! Love this post.
Susan: Well, I like you, and I want to spend the night with you.
Josh: Do you mean sleep over?
Susan: Well, yeah.
Josh: OK… but I get to be on top.
my fiance didn’t see this movie until 2 years ago and the moment I found out, I made his entire family sit down and watch it. I think of it every time I see caviar!
Oh gosh, it’s been so long since I’ve seen this movie. I think I need to have a retro night with some friends, junk food, and this film. What a fun “living in”, thanks for reminding me of this slice of my childhood :)
Try as I might, I just couldn’t find a good floor piano!
I just watched this last week for the first time! What a great feel-good movie.
This was just on last night and my BF had never seen it, so I made him watch it.
I had forgotten how much I loved it. And yes, I want that loft, too!
Such a great movie, and such great pairings! The trampoline with the silver lining may be my favorite.
I love love love this one. I would gladly live in Big. :)
Life is too funny.
I literally JUST got back from a blind lunch date with a guy who reminded me of the younger version of the lead character in this movie (re: pretty darn cute).
i love this movie, and i absolutely love your reminder to relish in the “grown-up” things i get to indulge in (i remember when grocery shopping for myself seemed so exciting)!
Oh man… you just brought me back… I am putting this movie on my netflix right now! I love it!
I’ve never seen this movie but you’ve convinced me now!
I sometimes eat pastry for dinner – just because I can. I feel I owe it to the 9 year old me ^___^
LOL!! classic movie, and i am right there with you with the nostalgic love that comes with 1980′s kids stuff… i will never, ever grow tired of a true old school light bright! i was equally jealous of the indoor trampoline, or rather live-in playground he had going on haha!
Amen to the buying of large trampolines!
great movie! i always wanted to eat baby corn after i saw it.
love.this.movie!
Ah yes, a total classic. So glad you did a “Living In” for this one :)
‘Living In’ is such a great midday escape. I love seeing familiar movies through your eyes, Amy. Any chance of seeing a Royal Tenenbaums ‘Living In’? You would make me so very happy!
I JUST watched this yesterday and loved that you featured it. It’s such an adorable movie. :)
Amy, your description just made me swoon! I have always wanted to “live in” this movie. I turned 30 in Dec. and I still pinch myself when I get to stay up late, eat junk food and do whatever I want, whenever I want. Sometimes I even jump on the bed; it’s not a trampoline, but it works :) Thanks for reminding us to release the inner child!
Aww, Big is such a sweet, sweet movie! Think I’ll have to dust off my copy and watch it again.
Great choice!
OMG OMG OMG THANK YOU!!! This totally made my day <3
this made me smile…BIG!
I LITERALLY just watched this movie. I’d seen it as a kid and all I remembered was the baby corn part and the giant keyboard part. What a great movie! I love the way Tom Hanks dresses in this movie. Adorable.
So great. I’m still a little afraid of the fortune telling machines….
I think of Big every time I eat baby corn! My mom has that dresser in her bedroom – the one in the silly string scene. Cool!
This is great, maybe you’ve already done it (although I searched), but this reminds me…when are you going to do BIG FISH!? Aesthetically fabulous.
Hahaha! Classic! This was always one of my favorite movies as a kid. I am so glad that I stumbled upon your blog and you shared this. Thank you! :)
my fav childhood movie! i must’ve watched it 100 times as a kid.
great finds!!
I just watched this on tv last night! I loved his loft as a kid and I love it as an adult, just for different reasons. Such beautiful open space and architecture!
I just watched that movie for the first time in a decade last night!!! How weird!
Classic movie. I also love old Tom Hanks films. That Zoltar fortune telling machine is the coolest! The mini foosball table is great too.
Speaking of fancy pants 80s lofts – when I was a teen, I absolutely adored Laura Holt’s, from “Remington Steele”!
Love it.
You must have seen Big on TV the other day. Ended up staying up past my bedtime to watch it.
Thank you for this great trip down memory lane – one of the classic films of all time.
I’m yet to find a glow-in-the-dark compass ring, so am constantly getting lost… :o)
Love it! I recently found out one of my best friends has never seen the movie and I was paralyzed by shock for a good 10 minutes!
Back then we wanted to be grown ups; now we just want to be kids again! Ha!
Every Tuesday I giddily check Design*Sponge to see which movie was featured in Living In. It’s so exciting when it ends up being a movie I love. But it also inspires me to see movies I’ve never heard of before. Hope this series NEVER, EVER ends.
Hilarious, love this!
One of my favourite films! Love the blog.
what a great post for such a great movie!
Seriously, Amy?! You pick the coolest, least obvious movies EVER and find a way to turn them into something totally awesome. I’m basically in awe of you. I wait every week for these posts!
LOVE this movie…think of it everytime I eat baby corn or caviar!
marian
i feel the same way- i know half the people reading are still waiting for “the royal tenenbaums”, but i really love that amy picks movies that are unexpected and less well-known. it’s my favorite part of the column – waiting to see which movie will feel like a blast from the past or something i never knew i wanted to see ;)

Whoa, mindreading. I just watched this on Sunday. Tried to get my kids to curl up and watch with me, but when they got distracted, I kept with it. One of my favorite movies ever. And to be honest, as much as I love design, I still, at almost 30, just want his apartment, trampoline and all.
How about “Living in Annie”? maybe?
Just watched this the other day……classic.
i LOVE big! The fortune teller machine was my favorite part for sure!
Oh, wow.
When I am super-rich and fabulous, I will totally have a mechanical fortune-teller in my apartment. I never can resist them.
Watched this on TV a couple of weeks ago with my aunt and cousin. Such fun. You have to love this charmer. I’m fascinated by 80s fashions.
Imagine owning one of the Zoltar machines! Ha! How fantastic.
