i’ve never been the type of girl for whom diamonds are the be all and end all. i’ve always preferred a nice piece of vintage jewelry (no diamonds required) or, in this case, i’d prefer my diamonds in lighting form. swedish designer eric therner has created these beautiful enviromentally friendly, e-27 halogen light bulbs that are shaped like diamonds. i can only imagine how impressive these would look grouped together as an impromptu chandelier. if you’re in the market for something special, perhaps consider these pretty “diamonds” for your big day’s decoration instead. click here for more info and to buy online ($37 each). thanks, eric!

and since we’re on the topic of my favorite things, why not bring up my love all all things cake-related? if i could eat one dessert for the rest of my life it would easily be birthday cake. classic yellow cake with chocolate icing makes me a very happy girl. so when i saw these beautiful paintings by jordan ferney and her husband, oil painter paul ferney. paul asked jordan what she would paint if she could and she said “cakes!”. with jordan as art director, paul painted the cakes and stands jordan picked and now they’re having a collaborative show at ferney art studios (766 valencia street, san francisco) starting september 3rd at 6-8pm (cake will be served!). these lovely pieces will be for sale online starting september 6th, but until then i’ll keep drooling over them. they’re like a modern, more textured version of my favorites by wayne thiebaud. ah, cake and art. what’s not to love? thanks, jordan!

Carolyn Springer is an artist that also does cake/candy encaustic paintings that are beautiful! I think you all would love them! http://www.studiocarolynspringer.com
That light bulb is amazing. I’d love to see it in person. I bet it’s even better!

Oh my, I love the cake paintings. A most delectable subject.
i bet those bulbs would look great in a chandelier
Cake portraits… what a splendid idea. Those would look great on my gray kitchen wall.
How are the lights environmentally friendly? Halogens are not the most efficient lamps in terms of emitting light. Is it the manufacturing process or something?

im not 100% sure- i’ll double check for details with eric. i did a quick google search and people keep calling e27 bulbs “energy saving”

I think I am going to start a “dessert art” collection
Oh my goodness, those cake painting are AMAZING. I’m in love. Can’t wait to check out the show!
Mmmm. It’s a good thing those cakes are just on my computer screen, otherwise I might be tempted to run my finger across them and then stick it in my mouth. I especially love the first one, it literally looks like it has icing on it. And I love the color composition with the soft peaches and corals and then that amazingly luscious hunk of velvety chocolate goodness in the center. I want to have this cake and eat it too.
Thank heavens it’s my birthday tomorrow so I immediately get to eat cake! Those paintings are yummy.
Thank you for these cake paintings – so lovely! It reminds me of the conversation I had with my wedding cake baker – something along the lines of “I want a cake that looks like a cake, not a clay sculpture!” These oil paintings would have made a great visual for what I mean – they look like CAKES. Yummy ones, too. :) Mmmm…. perhaps for that eventual breakfast nook?
loving the diamond.. the cake paintings are lovely.
the paintings are spectacular.
They are indeed, Stacey.
Also, @ Natasha-
It’s going to be difficult to purchase good incandescent bulbs for chandeliers after 2012. (Alternatives should certainly be looked into.) After all, can we imagine an ugly CFL bulb in a beautiful crystal chandelier???
For a minute, I thought you were doing a feature on Wayne Thiebaud. He taught at my university so I saw a lot of his work around campus.
E27 doesn’t necessary mean energy saving. It actually refers to the size of the screw of the bulb. In Europe the bigger one is E27 and the smaller one is E14.
Wayne Thiebaud was what came to mind for me as well…
I love that the cakes look like they were painted with frosting.
Love these cake paintings.
Thought you’d like to know Eric Therner has released a new batch of light bulbs, lighter than the original (in weight!). Beautiful off or on!
