last year i posted about miriam rosenbloom’s beautiful book cover designs for faber’s classic poetry selection, so i was thrilled to hear from her about a new collection of artist-designed book covers. miriam worked with six british printmakers to create covers that were more colorful and specially commissioned endpapers. the talented group includes: jonathan gibbs, ed kluz, michael kirkman, peter clayton, sarah young, and charles shearer.
i think the collection is just stunning so i was even more excited to hear that miriam wanted to give away a set of the books, a set of the endpapers (as flat sheets) and a faber bag to a lucky d*s reader. i don’t normally do giveaways but these were too cool to pass up. so, if you’d like to be eligible to win (no restrictions on location!) just leave a comment below describing why you’d like to win the book set by monday, july 5th at 11:59pm EST. i’ll use a random number generator to pick a winner and then announce the winner on tuesday, july 6th. thanks so much to miriam and faber for sharing this with us- click here for more information the new set of books at faber.

I’m finishing a PhD in English Literature in Montreal — and I love poetry. I work from home, so I try to surround myself with beautiful things, and I take mini-vacations from my dissertation everyday into the land of d*s! These are such beautiful collaborations between the power of words and the power of patterns, both nuanced in the similarity and difference of one another. One tells poetry in words and sentences and paragraphs relayed from the heart to the head, and through the fingertips onto the keyboard or paper, while the other is a myriad of light and dark and colour that pops, yet uses the same heart string plucking material. One to read, one to look at. I would be more than pleased to receive such a noble gift of the joining of two such like/unlike forces… we are all reflections of what we wish to be and it seems to me that this pairing of old poets and new poets is fully and beautifully tied to the material that encases it.

I would love to win this book set because seeing such strong, lovely book design reminds me that PRINT IS NOT DEAD! Regarded by so many as a dying-if-not-dead field, I am a graphic designer who still gets turned on by paper, by the smell of a book, by the feel of a page turn under my thumb, and I would love to add these books to my ever growing library. Partly for selfish reasons, and partly to show the interns and junior designers I mentor that print is very much alive!

I love poetry, but don’t read enough of it. One of my English professors would end every class telling us to go read poetry, it’s good for us. And he’s right! It forces one to slow down and concentrate. It’s the antidote to mutli-tasking! It’s like meditation!

I currently commute into nyc from Red Bank NJ (just a little over 4 hours per day!). Obviously, I read alot…which works out because reading and anything relating to books have always been a passion of mine from a young age.
The beautiful illustrations on this book set would definitely brighten up my commute on the drab gray NJ Transit trains (seriously, it’s basically purgatory!). And, I could reuse the bag to brown-bag my lunch as I am saving for my eventual move to nyc!

An old friend says that books and music make a house a home … and I agree. This books would be treasured additions to my collection.
Once when I visited painter, Jonathan Lasker’s studio he said something along the lines of,
“Poetry is the perfect form of literature for New Yorkers. The city is so hustle and bustle and we’re constantly jumping from one thing to another, but poetry, short and punchy, can be fully appreciated on a subway ride or before bed.”
Now that I’ve finally moved to NYC, I see that his words really do ring true, and I am now in deep need of a collection such as this.
Visual art and literature have so much in common, it’s great to see them come together here!

Wow! These are beautiful. I’d love for these to be in my collection for a few reasons. First, I am an book lover and poetry reader. I’m currently in an Literature graduate program where I will be tested on many of these poetry works. Having them in such a pretty format would encourage me to really investigate them. Second, I am also interested deeply in book arts. I have worked composing, printing, binding my own books. I have a deep respect for the work that goes into the design of a book and I believe that these are beautifully done. I’d love this set to read and to gain inspiration in designing my own editions.

These books and prints are simply beautiful. The colors of one of the illustrations reminds me of a stunning book by Stanislav Lem illustrated by Mandy Schlunz, “Der Schnupfen”. It was released by “Büchergilde Gutenberg”, a German publisher known for exquisite and well-crafted books.

These prints are completely beautiful. As an art student, I’m drawn to the aesthetically pleasing– bright patterns and comfortable colour systems, like Tang dynasty ceramics or Gauguin’s colour palette. As well as being a fan of little books of poetry and needing a big pretty bag for toting my things around!

Poetry is SAVING me now I’m out of the World with my two young children, Gabriel and Eve.
At Gabriel’s christening early this month we wished him Larkin’s “… Vigilant, flexible, unemphasised, enthralled / Catching of happiness…”

Because I work in a library all day which can make you see books as a commodity rather than a pleasure. I sometimes need to be reminded to really look at the beauty of a book in all its simplicity and the potential it carries within.

I’m a medical researcher and in March I started dating a wonderful man who is a published poet. Before I met him I knew NOTHING about poetry and he introduced me to the poetry of Ted Hughes. He pointed out these beautiful books to me when we were out and about one day and it would be lovely to present him with a beautiful book as a thank you for introducing me to poetry.

When I was a teenager I didn’t get grounded for coming in after curfew, like normal kids did. My english teacher mother had me memorize a line of poetry for every minute I was late. Of course I thought this was unbelievably cruel at the time, but her evil plan to make me fall in love with poetry worked (15 years later).

As much as they love it here, they miss the life they knew there. Printmaking and books are two of my favorite things. I found a discarded library book of 18th century poetry once. It had prints in it by British printmaker, John Piper. Really enjoyed the book. Will enjoy these also.

My house burned down this week – how strange that is to say. My personal library last Saturday was hundreds and hundreds of books, with a decent selection of poetry. As of yesterday it was three bibles and a Jimmy Buffet novel, which were gifts. Can you imagine the narrative style of Jimmy Buffet? Don’t. This morning I opened an email from an old friend and he said his family had ordered all the Penguin Classics clothbound to begin the rebuilding of my library. These lovely books of poetry would be a beautiful addition.

I would love to look at the books on my shelf as they are designed and printed really well then I would gather them all up and place them in the Faber bag and slink off to a corner to look at them and read them.
Finally I would love to frame some of the end papers and have them round my room and then keep swapping them as they are artworks in themselves.

I’m working on my PhD in Education, looking specifically at the ways that children talk about picturebooks and the ways that these books can be used to learn about art and design. Endpapers are an often-overlooked part of book design and can carry considerable meaning. In fact, I’ve co-authored an article about endpapers in picturebooks! I create handmade books, and often make my own prints for covers and endpapers, so I know the artistry that resulted in these beautiful covers and endsheets. Last year, a friend sent me a copy of Simon Armitage’s translation of Sir Gawain and the Green Knight. I was an English major in college and she knows that I’m a big fan of literature from the Middle Ages. Armitage brought the poem to life for me again, this time in a very exciting and modern way. I can’t wait to read the poems in ‘Kid.’

I love unexpected book cover designs, and these are poets I was going to use in my art thesis. I would definitely bring these to school with me regardless of my lack of space.
Other than the vibrant graphic stylization which catches my minds eye, the literary artist Sylvia Plath brings forth a fond moment of nostalgia. My friend threw quite the funny fluster fit when she couldn’t find a single book with the Plath poem she wanted to reference at a bookstore recently…I’d like to win the set for her, it would be cool yet something to laugh about as well.

I would LOVE to have this collection because, not only are they absolutely beautiful, but I have somewhat recently learned just how much I love poetry. I just took an amazing course on Sylvia Plath (in which we got to visit archives of her original poems, family photos, her typewriter, etc.) and would love a copy of this version of Ariel. The books all look amazing.

Seeing these took me back to my A-level Eng Lit essay: ‘Pessimistic and depressing – how far do you agree with this assessment of Philip Larkin’s work?’ At the time my answer was ‘All the way…’ so more than 10 years on, I should probably give the guy another chance. Plus there’s Plath, the fantastic Wendy Cope, and some others I’ve yet to discover. Plus they’re gorgeous, and would be much appreciated and enjoyed in this English girl’s new Texas home. Everything about these gorgeous books speaks to me! I love poetry and am a devoted follower of Sylvia Plath particularly(I’ve read nearly everything she’s published, including letters she exchanged with her mother). These are the sort of books that would be treasured keepsakes for decades to come, both for the beauty of the covers and the poetry inside! Looks like my chances are slim, but here’s hoping.
I did seven years hard labour in a bookstore, and over that time I grew to love and adore the beautifully designed covers that stood out in a sea of pulp. I started buying books because I liked the cover. I’d check the international imports to see if I liked the US, UK or Australian cover of a book better before buying it. I want to win these books because I’m a printer myself (letterpress), and while I mostly focus on typographic art, I have a deep respect for print artists of all kinds, especially those who are as talented as these. I want to enroll in the first book arts/creative writing masters program in the U.S. (at Mills College) in fall 2011, and these books are inspiring!

These books are beautiful. I can’t get enough of bookstores and libraries. I treasure each book I come across for its content and its beauty as an object. This set of books represents a sweet assemblage compiled with care and respect for the arts. Like so many others I would love to possess these delicate treasures and appreciate them in person. However, my hopes to teach some classes in the near future are not materializing. I would ask for these books if I knew I would share them with a multitude of students who would be equally (if not more) inspired by their design. However, since this is not the case, I write a plea on behalf of those who will share these books with many others. I am about to embark on a cross country move. starting a new life in Atlanta and need a bit of beauty to inspire my new home, life and adventure.
This collection is very unique – prints appear fresh and modern, but are also based on traditional book designs. Im curious what kind of paper is used and what impression you have leafing them through for the first time.

Today I was complaining to my boyfriend about our livingroom and how it is full of vinylrecords but no books. I started to browse the DIY-section of design sponge for inspiration on how I could hide all the DVDs and Records in the open shelfs… but some beautiful books would be way better!!!!

In a world where technology seems to be all-consuming, it gives me hope to see there are people still passionate about print! I am about to tackle what will be a rigorous 5-year program studying graphic design and literature, which most people deem the ultimate exercise in pointless education.
