living in: the parent trap

It is officially summer and I am officially, um…. hot. I’ve been channeling all of the energy I can muster (not much) into dreaming about my upcoming vacation to my family’s summer house in New Hampshire. Long canoe rides, hikes in the mountains, the occasional campfire and a fair amount of time spent lounging in a vintage swimsuit. I’ve basically engineered my weeks off to become a glorified grownup summer camp and no movie brings more nostalgic summer-timey camp goodness to the table than The Parent Trap.

brass compass $15, recycled sunglasses $21, deadstock vintage swimsuit $190, wooden oar $26, american traders wooden canoe $2700+, swiss army knife $10, ll bean mariner purse $77, pendleton glacier national park blanket $160.

The Parent Trap is just adorable on every front, regardless of its superbly improbable plot. Two cute blonds at the same camp who look exactly alike? Guess what? Long lost twinsies who then use their painful cuteness to trick their estranged parents into falling in love again. One is a prep school Boston princess and the other’s a rough and tumble California tomboy. Both are equally out fitted in awesomeness and other than the whole pouring honey on fellow sleeping tent-mates, I’m game just about everything else. -amy m.

blue metal lantern $26, diamond safety matches $1.25, antique nickel flashlight $14, chloe high waisted shorts $360, vintage suitcase $45, woven leather oxfords $115, outdoor teepee $2200, blue bandana $2, wildflower honey $4.50.

Let’s get together, yeah yeah yeah!

Omg, I LOVE this movie! I don’t care how old I get, I will always love getting lost in this classic. So funny. And the twins’ dad Mitch was totally hot!

Leah D.

LOVE LOVE LOVE this movie – and your post on it! If only you could find a dress with the butt cut out of it – or maybe a fancy pair of scissors!

Karen

I am so happy you did this movie! What about the parents houses and outfits! Can’t forget the girlfriend and her electric hips!

kara lynn

i was just watching this movie yesterday and thought the same thing.

what a wonderful inspiration for some fresh outdoors style.

Julie

Funny, I was just hoping last week that you would feature Parent Trap and now here it is! One of my favorite movies and your feature has got me hankering for a tent and some serious canoe time. Thanks!

Rachel

Those swimsuits are the cutest! Can’t wait till it gets warm enough here to take a dip. By the way, I thought that was a Hudson’s Bay Point Blanket? I have a couple of those from my great-grandmother’s time and thet are the perfect thing for picnics.

jen

this is my favorite “living in” yet! thanks for inspiring a girls’ night “parent trap” viewing party.

Maggie

I LOVE this. ‘The Parent Trap’ was one of my favorite movies when I was a kid, but no one seems to remember it now! I’ve always adored the retro, feel-good summer style. Plus, who doesn’t love Haley Mills?

Jamie

AHhhH! The Parent Trap! I love everything about this post!

Decor Girl

Oh, does this bring back memories! Great post idea. The Parent Trap was such a great movie. Summer camp… I loved it. Um yeah, remember when we could have a pocket knife? Though I did whittle off a finger nail on a girl scout project…

Canoes, camping, flashlights, smores, green tents, patriotic colors, and there was always sand in the food!

Lauren

I love love love this movie. I am now inspired to go find a retro swimsuit and watch this movie! Thanks!

Kersten

I caught my breath when I saw this post! LOVE IT! Sending it to my mother directly!

Mallory - Miss Malaprop

Love that movie and that whole era of live action Disney movies. There was one with a young Jodie Foster too, though I can’t remember the name now…

Aracely

Love this, but there is a huge missed opportunity once the girls go back to the dad’s ranch and the mom shows up…there is a such a cool rustic mid century thing happening there……maybe I’ve seen this too many times….nerd alert….

beth

I love this movie. My sister and I would watch it non-stop. I’m so glad that you decided to use Parent Trap as inspiration for your today’s blog post!

Nicole

Such a great summer choice I think I’ll dust off my VHS. Since seeing that movie I always wanted that black swimsuit of hers with the white rickrack. I think you should do part two of this and show the California side of things ;)

Natalie

This was my absolute favorite movie as a kid! It used to come on TV all the time. I haven’t seen it in years though. Thanks for doing a Living In on this one! Maybe I can get my husband to watch it with me =) Nostalgic!

mh

oh, swoon. this was my favourite movie growing up. maybe pollyanna could be done at some point to? or swiss family robinson, even?

jojo

Holy cow! I can’t believe you did this movie!! My favorite of all time, no kidding. Thanks for making my day:)

Cheri - I Heart Old Houses

Mallory, I think you’re thinking of Freaky Friday! The timing of this post is so funny. I was just at the (amazing) Disney Family Museum in S.F. yesterday and they had a great section on The Parent Trap and some other of Disney’s first live action flicks. Cool stuff.

Mitzi

Growing up, I watched this movie with my sister every weekend we went to our cabin in Shell Lake, Saskatchewan! Brings back so many memories, and those woven leather oxfords and vintage swimsuit are to DIE for :)

Layla

I love the fashion in The Parent Trap. It is on my Guilty Must-Watch Top 10.

Christie Chase

Thanks for the reminder of this great summer movie! I too, am headed to my family’s summer house in New Hampshire in a few weeks, and can not wait to escape Texas’s summer heat.

Katherine

great post. I loved watching this movie over and over!

photohogger

Oh, how I adore this movie – I’m sure every girl does :) I wish I could watch it again, now. That movie and Pollyanna, oh, that Hayley Mills was so adorable!
Love the vintage bathing suits :)

MelD

I was quite taken with this until I realised it was just a US movie version of the German classic by Erich Kästner “Das Doppelte Lottchen”, which has been filmed so many times… hm. Not sure, now…

marissa Bognanno

my most favorite childhood movie! i love the whistling scene when the girls get banished and all those delicious pranks!

patty

I love how you throw in a $2200 teepee with the other beautiful accoutrements…LOVE all this campy stuff!! makes me yearn for summers gone by…

Maya

This is definitely Hudson Bay’s blanket, our Canadian pride and joy, still sold at The Bay, posted just in time for Canada Day! Who are these Pendleton Glacier people?!
BTW, I remember Erich Kastner book, it was better than the movie.

Cat

Ohmigod, I know this movie by heart! This is one I grew up with, and I totally adore Hayley Mills. I always wished I could go to that summer camp (minus the booby traps, of course).

Britta

Wow, haven’t seen this movie in a while… I learned so many great pranks from this one!

Shannon

Heehee! Who knew there were so many Parent Trap afficianados out there! That film has a really special place in my childhood too, thanks for giving it a summer shout-out. Plus, any post that has a teepee in it always steals my heart!

teresa

And here I thought I was alone in my love for this film. Do you ever talk about this film and people’s eyes just glaze over? I guess they just don’t get it. Thanks for adding this post. Makes me want to pop in the DVD right now. Funny, I also like the L.L. version, too.

Gina A.

I thought I was alone too! This movie was my FAVE as a kid! That Lindsay Lohan movie botched it. Loving that bathing suit and the whole retro 50′s camping vibe… as long as I dont have to actually GO camping….

Blue Hydrangea

Love this post. The Parent Trap is one of my all time favorite movies! Love the camping accessories…hope you have a fabulous vacation!

Tiffany

Aw, man! I’ve been waiting for a Living In Parent Trap and ther’s nothing about Mitch’s house??? How could you???

Kristi

Wow – I loved this movie growing up – I was so convinced that American girls had all the coolest things happen to them.

But sorry, Maya is 100% correct. That is definately not a Pendleton blanket – see those faint black lines above the coloured stripes? – Those are called “points” and they are only found on an authentic Hudsons Bay Company blanket (Bay blankets – voyageurs used them; they have a long, unique and important history in Canada). Pendleton just blatantly copied the design – definately not cool!

Check it out here https://www.hbconline.ca/hbcheritage/history/blanket/

amy

I LOVE The Parent Trap! I used to think Haley Mills was really twins. You know, before I knew that she was Haley Mills…
Your Living In features are one of my absolute favorite things on this blog! I just wrote about them this week, actually!
These days, when I watch a movie, I can’t help thinking, “Would it make a good Living In post?”

modernmonkey

This brings me back to my first memory of loving architecture but I didn’t realize it until now. Do you remember the California home? It was open and incorporated the outdoors, live plants in the living room, and with huge boulders incorporated as architectural accents in the main living room. I also remember the color scheme being so different (and better) than the boston home. Ah, thanks for the memory jogger.

Andrea Avery

I read this book SO many times as a kid, I wore the cover off and made a new one for it (drawing a plaid design if I recall). While I liked the movie an awful lot, I loved the book even more. I thought their mom was sooo glamorous.

Becks Chic Life

These “Living In” posts are always so much fun! What a great movie!!! I love the swim suit, and how fun would it be to have that Teepee in your back yard?!!

Wes

My daughter and I love the old movie, love the “new” movie, and are so excited to find out there’s a book that started it all! Can’t wait to read it. I always thought the mom in the original movie was so gorgeous — isn’t it Maureen Sullivan?

grammarpuss

Adorable, adorable, adorable!

But, please, work on the old it’s versus its issue. It’s not that hard, and the two consistently are mixed up on this site– especially in the Living In columns.

grace

gp

maybe this was fixed before i got to your comment, but i don’t see an “it’s/its” error here. i did a term search for anything like that and couldn’t find it. could you tell me where you see the error?

g

jamie

I love that movie! I loved Haley Mills growing up.
I was watching “Body Heat” last night and was thinking, wouldn’t this movie make a great “Living In” :)

bananasdontsk8

This movie was my [and my sister's] favorite, growing up, so I was so excited to see it featured here. I was a little disappointed over the selection, though. What about some inspiration from either of their parents’ houses? the camp was great an all, but there’s so much more there!

Katie

Love. It. What an excellent throw back to my childhood! Like so many commenters, I just love the swimsuits!

PS- Grace, Here is the it’s/its mistake. I didn’t even catch it at first and I’m an editor! Then again, DS is a fun blog, not an English essay. “The Parent Trap is just adorable on every front, regardless of it’s superbly improbable plot.”

lsaspacey

Hey, the girl all the way to the right played Larue, Sally Field’s best friend on the Gidget show! Why can’t I get paid to know things like this?

Jamie

I love your posts!!! I think the next movie you post should be Mystic Pizza!!! I love that film

Alison Heath

Oh, please do a follow-up post where we get to live in Mitch’s fab Spanish Colonial Revival home! You would make my year.

Rebeca

Hooray! I love this “Living In”. My favorite part of the entire movie may be the vintage opening credits- too cute!

jenn

thanks for reminding me of this movie. I watched it SOOO many times.. used to dream about meeting my own twin at camp. HA!

Pixen

we just watched this over the last weekend – the camp was ok but what about dad’s awesome ranch house?

swiss

Parent Trap. I had forgotten all about that movie. It was one of my favorites when I was little. And one of my mom’s favorites too! I used to imagine her there at the camp. Thanks for the reminder + the cool styles they had then.

ImSoVintage

My sister has watched this movie so many times she has the lines memorized. It is a great summer classic.

Erin MacDermott

looooved this movie, watch with my girlies all the time. BUT….. what is with all of the Hudson Bay blanket knock offs??
sorry… a little protective, today is canada day after all!! check out the queens’ outfit in ottawa today!!

Erin MacDermott

well it was canada day here in british columbia…. 3 hours back!

alison

yeah, sorry… that’s a Hudson’s Bay Company blanket. Canadian original, being marketed as an American product. what else is new?

Dan

I actually blame The Parent Trap for my irritating habit of biting my nails!

Mile End

I can’t believe Urban Outfitters is selling the iconic Hudson Bay blanket as a “Pendelton Glacier National Park Blanket”. It’s pretty shamelessly ripping off Canada.

Maggie Rose

Love it! And it totally makes me yearn for a great “Now and Then” Living In. Can’t go wrong with a retro summer movie!

Mary

What a great post – such a classic movie. I think I broke the videotape I watched it so much. I want that mariner purse!

jessica

sigh. “girls, i’ve got a cake in my hands! i’ve got a cake in my hands!”

Maria

Love the movie. Love the clothes in it and I’m such a tomboy. But what I really love is Mitch (the dad’s) house!

Georgia

I have had every word of that movie memorized since I was 7! I used to watch it over and over again for entire weekends!

Breenuh

I grew up with this movie – love it! (The other day, I encountered someone who had never even heard of it… what?!)

I definitely want the vintage suitcase & bathing suit. Have fun on your grown-up summer camp adventure!

Lindsay

so odd but like others on here, I too was just recently hoping you would do this movie, wow! it must be the come back of camper chic going on?! who knows, I even went and rented it last week, lol! I wanted to see the home of the dad in monterey, plus I am obsessed with all things old school 60s. thanks!

Jenny Post

I LOVE this movie – I thought it was absolutely magical that both of them could be on screen on at the same time. I didn’t believe my mother when she told me it was only one actress. I thought Hayley Mills had a secret twin.

Bridget

I am so glad I found this website, and all of your posts! You have done so many of my favorite movies, and this is one I watched over and over again as a kid. I wish I would have thought of this idea-you are doing a wonderful job and it seems like you get lost in everything about a movie just like me (and a lot of people on this board!). The music, scenery, fashion. Ahh, a total escape!
