dispatches from milan: zona tortona

Hello everyone, Dana from yellowtrace here again. Thank you for tuning in for the second round of my Milan Design Week highlights. Today I will share with you some of the favourite things I saw at Zona Tortona.

Zona Tortona is the biggest satellite design event area outside the gigantic fairground at Rho, which started up nine years ago as an alternative location for emerging designers to showcase their work. Since then, Zona Tortona has become extremely popular with many of the big names and established designers now showing their work in this popular design hub during the design week.

Apart from countless showrooms, galleries, basements and courtyards full of design exhibitions and installations, this buzzing area is also well known for huge street parties which run till early hours of the morning {top right in collage of images above}. Oh yes, these parties are quite an experience in themselves!

Tom Dixon’s stand at Superstudio on Zona Tortona displayed most of his product to date, including a Flash Factory for his new Etch collection. Visitors were able to buy lights and candleholders at the stand, which were made of brass or stainless steel.

The objects were offered in 3 versions: as pre-assembled by one of the Flash Factory workers, or people could assemble their own at the stand, and finally the product could be purchased flat packed to be assembled at home.

Blu was a breathtaking series of installations by Paola Navone for Barovier & Toso at Superstudio.

Corallo Chairs by the Campana brothers hosted by Veuve Clicquot. Look at that lush vertical garden!

Stunningly beautiful and super fun ceramics by Royal Goedewaagen.

Urchin softlight and paper softwall by Molo design at The Temporary Museum for New Design at Superstudio Piu on Zona Tortona.

Along similar lines, stunning paper lights in Du Pont’s Tyvek, by Chinese designers Naihanli. Gorgeous.

Italian designers Alessandro Antoniazzi and Walter Davanzo exhibited their Paperboard Innovation project at Superstudio on Zona Tortona. I have to say that what I think I really like about this product is the styling, location and photography of press images, rather than the product itself. What do you think?

This installation was called Velvetissement – Short Stories, on Via Savona. Visitors were encouraged to leave small personal possession in a transparent envelope. It said – “Everybody has a story to tell. Everybody has a memory to leave. Share with us yours”.

Installations at Dedon on Via Savona.

Work by the students of Academy of Arts, Architecture and Design in Prague. That fluorescent chair is simply amazing!

Berlin Milano on Zona Tortona had a few interesting products, such as {top left to bottom} malva lighting series by ett la benn, Stitching Furniture by Werner Aisslinger, PIT Table Lamp by Berlin-based design agency e27.

There is a definite trend for coloured cords and mixing ceramics, metal and timber. {In my opinion, W08 Lamp by Studioilse started it all, and it’s still the best one!}

Danish Crafts presented MINDCRAFT at Spazio Vuoto on Via Savona, showcasing some of Denmark’s finest crafts people. I loved the large knitted cupboard, titled Closet Knitter by Isabel Berglund. Also shown are Cool Chair bu Steen Ipsen and Net Foaming seating by Christian Flindt & Bodil Jerichau.

Stunning products and styling at Piet Boon. The chair in bottom right image was ridiculously comfortable – has to be experienced to be appreciated. Oh, and that window in top right image had nothing to do with anything, but I just love it, so I couldn’t resist including it in my collage.

I just love all the brilliant little discoveries that can be made just by walking along the street. Would you look at this super gorgeous lingerie concept by JenniPie? I honestly couldn’t believe my eyes – isn’t this just one of the sweetest things ever? JenniPie lingerie is sold and packaged to resemble ice cream and cup cakes. Lingerie never looked sweeter!

Being in Milan during the fair is just fabulous. But one of the best parts is discovering the places that have nothing to do with the fair, but still look brilliant and very inspiring, like this stunning bar & restaurant. So beautiful.

I hope you’ve enjoyed my Milan snapshot as much as I’ve enjoyed putting it together for you. I would also like to thank my partner in crime, Mark Leib, for taking some of the best photos I’m showing you here today {especially Tom Dixon and Blu series}.

Thank you x1000 for posting this Dana. I am currently gearing up for my first trip to Milan for Design Week and am having a heck of a time finding some good content on the matter of what to do, see, eat etc. I will certainly check out Zona Tortona and will blog on the matter upon my return :)
Will you be at the fair this year (2011)?
