weekly wrap up + ruth jackson

kristina always sends me the best food-related links so it’s no surprise that her email tips this week were spot-on. kristina was checking out photographer myles new‘s site and found a link to ruth jackson‘s playful food and ice cream truck illustrations. i couldn’t find a separate site for ruth’s work (anyone?) but luckily myles’ site was full of gorgeous examples. i’d love to set up a series of framed ice cream truck illustrations in a child’s room- they’re the perfect combination of childlike and grown-up. if today’s baklava recipe made you as hungry as it made me, you can check out more of ruth’s sweet illustrations right here. i’m heading out for the weekend (and will be fixing the ftp links for anyone who’s had trouble downloading templates, etc!) so until monday, i hope you all have a great weekend! we’ll be launching the housingworks contest and a new d*s desktop wallpaper for may (from amy ruppel!) so be sure to check back on monday for those posts. a summary of this week’s highlights are below:

I really love these works and their vivid colors. They look especially nice next to each other on the site you linked.

FYI: though it’s not a Flash site, it seems to have no sub-URLs, so you have to click your way through to her portfolio, first clicking on the “LINKS” button.

P.S. Yeah, the baklava photos made me drool, too. So I found myself right away in the kitchen baking some goodies.

Have a happy weekend,

So delighted to see the lovely Ruth here! She did the charming illustrations for my cookery book (out in July!) and of my beloved VDub bus – she really did the most fantastic job.

Too bad the portfolio of Ruth Jackson’s had no artist bio, or gallery/sales info – great drawings, especially that cute Le Creuset pot.

Marissa

I can’t decide which I like more – the bus or the pot! Just lovely. I’d love one hanging in my kitchen!

Monique

Nice work. It kind of reminds me of Ralph Steadman’s work, but less bizarre.

Oooh, I need the drawing of the Le Creuset pot! I got one (in cherry red, of course) for Christmas and I was so happy I spent 15 minutes hugging it and smiling. My kitchen has no storage space so the pot lives on my stovetop and I think it’d be funny to hang the illustration right above it.

This week’s before and afters were the best yet. It’s becoming very competitive – I like that! Have a great weekend Grace!

Just realized that top ice cream truck is a Wall’s. I grew up with Wall’s ice cream trucks in Scotland – believe it or not, they sold tiny rectangular bricks of ice cream, wrapped in paper, that you unwrapped and popped into rectangular cones! Thanks for the memories!

adelle

Yep! Can definitely see these illustrations in a cook book Alice!
How lovely.

I had to smile when I saw the illustration of the WALLS ice cream truck. I grew up in Cornwall, England where Walls ice cream was really popular. we’re heading over to England in teh next few months and I was telling my boys that they will have to have some Walls. Lovely posting.

I always dig when color splashed out of the defining lines of the object.

das.

These illustrations are great. The use of the black outline with the with the bright block of colour, really makes these pieces stand out. Even though they have a messy, drawing outside the lines look, there is a lot of detail in them which makes them special. I really love the ice cream van illustration.
