macramé almost always feels dated to me, but i am really loving these macramé designs from sarah at smalltown in melbourne, australia. working with rope and macramé, sarah creates beautiful lighting and hanging plant containers. the hanging planters with the multiple levels are calling my name, but sarah’s store installation work is equally lovely. click here to check out more of her work online. thanks, sarah!

I love these! They’re such a nice take on the old school macramé that haunted me as a child growing up in the 70s.
I remember making macramé plant hangers in elementary school. Of course, mine never looked like this! I especially like the double-decker variety.
Wow, what’s old is new again huh? I remember my Mom making plant-holders. I didn’t love the look then but I must say the light fixture is lovely. Thanks for the great post.
I do love the top hanging light fixture. The shadows would be amazing on my front porch!
Love those, what great designs.
OH MY! I MUST have that top fixture! LOVE!
brings back good memories of craft day with my mom and sister… but the hanging light is a fab update…
These are beautiful. It makes me think of the 70′s too when my sister made a macrame belt. I still have the book somewhere.
I usually love everything on this blog, but I would be lying if I said I enjoyed this post.
Macrame!?
Love the light, it looks almost like thick fishing net. Don’t want to even think of it as macramé!
love the patterned shadows the light casts!
macrame’s trying to make a comeback?! don’t encourage it grace! haha
I love these – I am becoming more and more obsessed with macrame all the time. It’s definitely a growing trend! Don’t hate the macrame! :)
no, no, not again!
I love the black! It seems so much classier than from what I remember.
Get out of town! I love this post. The black plant holders look wonderfully sculptural–almost medieval–to me. To my eye, a far cry from the earthy macrame of yore!
I think it’s intriguing when someone updates a style that is so strongly linked to a specific time period and give it a new life. I especially like the incorporation of the macrame with lighting and its use as installation. They are a refreshing use of this “dated” craft, and I can begin to look beyond the term “macrame.”
Love it! Come on Macrame haters lighten up – if the light had been knitted it would have been all ooh and aahs.
revolutionary!
wow, very cool. i saw some turquoise macrame recently that has me thinking i need some macrame in my life.
