frank viva new yorker cover + dorian greyhound

i’m a huge frank viva fan, so when he emailed to announce his second new yorker cover i had to reply and ask him if he was currently writing his email from cloud nine. i’m so psyched that his artwork is on this week’s earth day cover and i couldn’t resist sharing it with a little “go, frank!” note. click here to check out frank’s home tour on d*s from last year, and here to check out his shop.

i have a feeling this next piece might be a little (or a lot) hit or miss for you guys, but for some reason i think these pet portraits from dorian greyhound & co. are hilarious. hilarious good, not bad- i can’t look at them without smiling and laughing (and as an official crazy cat lady i’m already imagining what turk and ms. jackson would look like in this setting). dorian greyhound is shawn silver’s new company that offers “ancestral” pet portraits made from images of your favorite pets. shawn and co. combine the portraits with existing old world portraits and then paint them in archival oils. for everyone? probably not. but if you’ve got some spare change sitting around (ok, spare bills. they start at $800) for some reason this is striking me as a fun idea for the person who really loves their pet- and already has everything. the full dorian greyhound website launches later this month but you can contact shawn and the team right here.

How weird – I was in a boutique with my dad and he was raving over similar dog portraits! I’m going to get in touch immediately – what a great Christmas present! (In advance…obviously!)

Oh dear. I see a fancy pants cat painting in my very near future.

Oh my goodness. !! I was always such a fan of those Grand Tour portraits of scholars with their dogs… What an enchanting upgrade!

looks just like our resuce dog, who’s turned out to be an English Shepherd. Who knew had such a noble lineage?

What a fun picture! Can’t wait for them to be up and running, I would love to feature them on my blog, if that’s ok?

I LOVE IT!!! I really don’t like dogs at all but I am obsessed by anthropomorphic dog portraits. I have a huge one over my couch!

I loved these pet portraits when I first saw them on Valerie Leonard’s site.
Check out the 2 Sealyham Terriers–the best dogs evah!–on the bottom right as Gainsborough “Blue Boy” and Van Dyke’s “William of Orange.”
