winged wheel stationery calling cards

i’m big fan of winged wheel in tokyo (oh, to visit in person one day!) so i’m always happy to see an email from rumi in my inbox. rumi sent over these lovely new customizable calling cards from winged wheel that are inspired by vintage woodblock designs from the meiji era in japan. each one is letterpressed with an old japanese printing method (that uses low pressure, unlike a lot of the letterpress we see today) and is printed on handmade cotton paper. click here to check out the full selections at winged wheel and place an order (prices start at $135 per 100 card set). thanks, rumi!

Gorgeous, my favorite part is the delicately placed spots of color. It makes such an impact that way!

Very pretty, but yeeesh expensive! $135 for a set of 100, might as well be handing out dollar bills.

creating a beautiful handmade product for a liveable rate is far from handing out dollar bills.

letterpress, especially this japanese technique, is an incredibly time-consuming process- and they’re using high quality handmade paper. so if you factor in the cost of labor and materials, this is a pretty reasonable price.

i think most people assume letterpress is quick and easy, but it’s anything but. i hope people will consider that next time before jumping to the “what a crazy price” type of conclusion.

Absolutely gorgeous! Something like this could also make a great save-the-date type card, right?

(In fairness to Rose, the price just seems like a lot when you can go online and get biz cards printed for like $10. Granted, those cards won’t look even a *fraction* as good as these, but I think that’s a given. You get what you pay for, and these are INCREDIBLE, so the price makes perfect sense. Still, sometimes you can’t help having a gut reaction to the numbers. I’ve done letterpress myself and still thought “oy.”)

(That said, these definitely look like they’re worth $1 each or more. If someone handed me one of these, I would save it just for its sheer beauty. And I always think it’s wise to make an investment in your career, just like printing your resume on good paper or buying a nice outfit for interviews.)

I have to agree that for me at least, the price is crazy! I don’t mean that in a bad way though. They look worth every penny! They are little works of art, and I would have a really hard time handing them out. I would be thinking, “are you worthy of the beautiful card?” Maybe if you got these, you could keep two sets for giving out, a cheaper regular one, and these for people you REALLY wanted to impress.

These are beautiful!! I love the detailing and edging. I think the price is absolutely worth it to receive the quality that you are obviously going to receive. Thank you for sharing!

What is the difference between calling cards and business cards?

back in the day a calling card was used for personal purposes, but today they’re pretty much interchangeable with biz cards.

I call myself an artist and I love making homemade cards. Did a few for Valentines Day. Love to use different mediums when working with cards. These calling cards are worth every penny & are special, like someone else here mentioned if I was to be given one of these cards I would definitely keep it forever. Beautiful work!! jj

These so make me want to be grown-up enough to actually have calling/business cards! Someday…

These cards are gorgeous. I haven’t had the need for business cards recently, but I continue to use calling cards. I give them out when I meet new people. I use my own photography, so some of my friends collect them. They’re fantastic when one is traveling.

These cards are a bargain from the point of beauty and memorability.

These are beautiful.

I’m intrigued by the Japanese letterpress process and would love to learn more about it.

Thanks for sharing.
