steamline luggage

by Grace Bonney

lately amy and i have been sort of obsessing about cool luggage. in preparation for next year’s book tour (yay!) we’ve been trying to find something fun that will a) fit in an overhead compartment (i hate checking luggage) and b) have rolling wheels and c) look super cute while being lugged from city to city. i’ve had my eye on a steamline luggage editor’s suitcase for years and when i saw they had a sale on, i finally bit the bullet and picked up the yellow/linen style (above, left) and it arrived the other day! i’ve been trying to keep the cats far away from it (they love to hook their sneaky little claws into linen) but it’s so cute i have a serious desire to display it in the house. so when i heard steamline was introducing a few new designs and colors i was extremely excited, namely because i have a dorky dream for both amy and i to have coordinating luggage. i know, dorksville. steamline just introduced a beautiful new peachy/orange color called ‘the stylist’ (above, right) that i’m really loving (it sells for $280-$320) and a chic brown and white leather option called ‘the diplomat’ (it sells for $540-$570). i really love the new pieces and can’t wait to check them out when they’re on the website in may. since these are the on the pricier end of luggage (at least for my budget), i thought i’d go ahead and post them now, since for me, this required a little bit of a save-up. if you’re looking for new luggage and want to invest in something really tailored and lovely, i highly recommend steamline. click here to check out their existing line and get on their mailing list to get updates when the new pieces are online. happy travels!

  • these are so cute! i love them! i’m on the look out for honeymoon luggage, but i don’t think my fiance will want to carry around such cute luggage!!!

    • amy

there are some very dude-friendly designs on the site- and the new collection has a very sophisticated blue and brown design that i think guys would like. :)

  • So cute! Your case would certainly not get lost in the crowd!

BTW: Any idea when the D*S book will be available in Canada!? Can’t wait for it to grace my coffee table! And will you be coming to Canada on your tour?

    • bridget

i’m hoping it will be the same as the US release, spring 2011. we’re def. going to try to make it to canada, whatever our budget allows :)

  • the first time you posted these i immediately feel in love. now i just need money and a good reason to buy luggage. my travels are usually weekend trips which mean a back pack full of clothes and my camera case.

  • Those are divine!!! Oh how I wish I had the cash to get one for our honeymoon… they are officially moved to the top of my wish list!

  • oh my goodness! i just bought the cream/yellow suitcase after I saw these on your tweet a while back & can’t wait to use it…next step for me is to Plan A Vacation :)

    • ooh we have the same one! isn’t it adorable in person? it wasn’t quite as yellow as i thought it would be, but i ended up loving it that way, the tan/yellow combo feels so chic and old-world travel ;)

  • hi phoenix – the new line isn’t yet up on the site. sign up for the mailing list to get the news about when it is available.
    cheers! amy

  • Hi there, these are lovely! I might not be looking properly but I can’t find the mailing list on their website…?
    Thanks, Emma

  • great, something to add to the birthday wish list! love your yellow choice…

am thinking the producer series in navy might suit our lifestyle right now. we’re currently traveling the world and living out of carry-on luggage and after 6-months of very functional but not extremely cute luggage, i think it’s time for an upgrade!

  • amazing stuff, but may i ask how you would keep it clean? my brand new 1st time used victrinox luggage arrived at baggage claim rather dirty. i’m wondering what airports would do to that linen :(

    • melissa

that’s the reason i got a size that would fit in carry on racks- i can’t risk they scuffing it up. but i guess you could coat the outside with a spray-coat of that fabric protector you put on couches- scotch guard i think? worth a shot. but i’d test on a piece of linen before spraying it down, to see what it does to the color.

  • So I have been in love with this stuff for over a year. The problem is they have had a perpetual sale and have been out of the sizes that are useful. You need the carry on size, an overnighter is truly too small for even the lightest of travelers. Hopefully they are going to introduce new stock soon!

    • katie

the overnighters were available a few weeks ago- that’s how i got mine. but they understandably sold out pretty quickly because the price was cut pretty nicely.

  • grace, one of my best friends and i have coordinating kate spade luggage. we always say we’re going to take a trip to paris with our matching suitcases. so you’re totally not a dork for dreaming of you and amy to match…or maybe i am a dork for having done it, too? ha!

  • As a frequent flier, I have one concern about these gorgeous bags. How will you keep the linen clean? My luggage gets pretty banged up as I fly from place to place so I tend to buy uglier luggage so I don’t have to be too careful or worried. Maybe I’m just messy…

    • keli

i’m testing out scotchguard this weekend, i’ll let you know how it goes. that way i can wash them down a bit…

(also, i don’t check luggage, so that’s why i felt comfortable taking the risk)

  • Its sooo cute – I vote you hang it on the wall and call it art – like I do with all the cute stuff I want to keep away from the cats and dogs.
Its way too cute to stash in a closet like the rest of us do with our blah old duffel bags.
Hang it high enough and kitty claws cant reach. But you can still enjoy the view.
    Bon Voyage

  • I love them! It’s like the globetrotter suitcases I love so much but will never be able to afford. These are very similar, and significantly cheaper. I want.

  • Are these bags heavy? They look like they might be, but you said you aren’t going to check luggage. You’ll have to let us all know how these hold up on your travels! Pretty cute!

    • julia

they’re a little on the heavy side, but they have wheels so i won’t have to lug them like my old handle bags. but the test will be to see if i can heave up into the overhead compartment ;)

    • elizabeth

i did a travel roundup for the under $100 column not too long ago. but it’s tough to find affordable luggage, and people always yell at me whenever i do a roundup that goes over like $200.

  • Yeah, I tried to search for luggage; but I will go to the under- 100 column. Thanks! Also, I won’t yell at you! :) I think this blog is amazing; Plus, nice luggage is a good investment. I am planning on asking for some for college graduation.

  • I’d love to know how yours is holding up now that you’ve had it for a while. i am considering purchasing from them and would love to know how they withstand travel.
