even though it’s miserable outside in brooklyn right now, and i just returned from a freezing weekend in boston, i’m holding out hope that spring is right around the corner (tomorrow maybe? please?). this year i’m hoping i can make use of our building’s roof, even though we don’t technically have permission to use it. but i figure after 3 years of checking and no one using it, and 3 years of having my landlord not fix a hole in our ceiling, i might be able to get away with setting up a few lawn chairs and enjoying the a glass of lemonade or two. with that limited dream in mind, i’ve been hoping to score some cute lawn chairs for the roof, since the hardware store below us seems to only stock these plastic models that always remind me of the scene in arrested development where tobias falls out of his chair while directing high school theater.

so when i heard from d*s reader tannis about an eco-friendly deck chair company i was immediately intrigued. inspired by traditional english deck chairs, friends tamra and gwyn decided to create their own deck chairs that would have the same look and feel, but would be as eco-friendly as possible. based in vancouver, tamra and gwyn set up shop as gallant & jones and created their deck chairs using north american black walnut for the frames (sourced from a well-managed forest) and an eco-friendly teak oil yacht stain for the finish. tamra and gwyn gathered colorful patterned sunbrella fabric from france and england to finish the chairs and now sell them from their online shop (which donates $5 to love trees for every chair purchased). each deck chair is available in a wide range out colorful outdoor fabrics for $175 right here, and you can read more about the fabrics and materials for each chair right here. if you’re looking for a high-quality outdoor chair this summer, these are a really beautiful option.

these are nice! I wish I had a deck or a balcony…
Oh! Dreamy… What fantastic fabrics!
I love these chairs. The fabrics are fun and sophisticated. A great invention!

These are sweet — more substantial than the plastic chair but still pretty portable (for when you’re told to vacate the rooftop, despite deployment of puppy-dog eyes)(no firsthand experience there, at all!)
I love these chairs in my garden and swimming pool…very comfortable in a sunny day….very nice..
Wow, these chairs are hot!
Great – they look like a warm summer day, with a good book, a cool drink and fun with friends, family and kids. With one of these, the weather will be irrelevant …
yes! i was looking for these – total victorian picnic chairs!
Oooh I really like the fabrics! Get out in the sun on the roof in your best one-piece retro bathing suit, big shades, big straw hat, cocktails and girlfriends around (Sex And The City style hell yeah!)…these would just add that extra stylish something!
Thanks for another Arrested mention!
pretty chairs but $175 a piece is a tremendous ripoff.

why is $175 a “ripoff” for a handmade chair made with high quality wood? factor in materials and labor costs and i think it’s actually pretty fair.

realy nice but reminds me a lot the desing of Picnic to Easy 3 years ago the price was $30 in Argentina.

We came upon these incredible chairs at Portobello West on Sunday. SO COMFY. I was a little sore from a dance class I took the day before, so I stayed for a little longer than may have been socially acceptable….but the ladies in charge didn’t seen to mind at all (that may have been because I was one of about 5 people hanging out in them like they were a part of their home patio furniture).
Great chairs! Coming from a company that supports style and affordability I think the $175.00 is a good value. The fabrics used on the chairs are designer patturns and updated colors. If we had a local shop on a shoreline, you could expect the buy the chairs for at least $200 each. Thanks for having such great information and products for people who want to be educated.
